Cheadle on War Machine

08.11.2009

I believe I speak for nearly everyone when I say that the highlight of the five minutes worth of leaked footage of IRON MAN 2 was War Machine. Even though we only saw him for about two-thirds of a second, his badassery extends far beyond that brief clip.

But it got us all worried, what if War Machine is just the Nick Fury cameo of the film? What if that half second is all we get to see of him in the actual movie and he doesn’t really start kicking ass until the third film? Well the man under the armor, Don Cheadle spoke to MTV to put our minds at ease, "War Machine makes a very impactful appearance in the movie. It's significant.”

And in a more recent interview, Cheadle further expands on the relationship between the two armored titans. "What's interesting is that there are so many different iterations of War Machine and Tony Stark from all the different comics. It was really trying to find the common thread, the through-line... [And] the through-line really is their friendship. They're actually really good friends…We kept asking ourselves: How does that play out with Tony Stark being an independent contractor doing what he wants to do, and Rhodes actually being in the military. There's a real chain of command he has to follow. What's the conflict that creates?"

So the real question is “do they fight?” And I think the answer is going to be a resounding yes. But now with Whiplash, Black Widow and War Machine all confirmed as major players, is this thing turning into SPIDERMAN 3?

Extra Tidbit: Does anyone really miss Terrence Howard? I don’t.

First of all....

COOL PIC !! Its my NEWEST wallpaper as I type! Secondly, I DON'T like it when the primary actors do not return for a sequel, whatever the reason. I like continuity, that just me. That being said, I feel it will be a GREAT movie anyway. I think Howard got a little greedy here. The Iron Man gravy train just departed, Mr. Howard

My only concern is that will Tony give him the armor like in the comic or is there some other way he obtains it?

No Way!

Iron Man 2 will bend Spider-Man 3 over! The mistakes of SM3 have been made and no Director in his right mind will ever make that mistake again. No smart Director anyway, which Favreau obviously is!

Normally, I don't like it when actors are replaced in sequels since it ruins continuity but in this situation it didn't bother me. I guess I was enjoying that 5 min comic con trailer of Iron Man 2 so much, there was no time for that sort of complaint to even enter my mind. Don Cheadle walked in and I accepted him as this character.

BTW, that trailer was fucking awesome! I thought the first movie was great but this looks even better from the footage they showed.

RDJ is one of my

RDJ is one of my favorite actors and so is Mickey Rourke so it will be very cool to see them in a movie together (not to mention what is probably a GREAT movie).

I missed Howard until I saw Cheadle in the footage, and just about forgot the other. Still, it's a little sketchy that nobody really issued a formal reason why they were changing. At least when they had Maggie Gyllenhaal step in for Katie Holmes, it's because Katie turned down the role. At least, according to Nolan.

I for one have always preferred War Machine over Iron Man (up until the alien armor crap, that soured it for me)...not sure what it is the overall look, the aresenal or just the fact that he kicks ass....

continuity

I love Cheadle...but I wish Howard was reprising the role. First off I see Howard as a more action-y sort of guy, bigger and tougher. Second, I just like continutiy. One day I imagine sitting in my house having an Iron Man movie marathon, and going from 1 to 2 will be a tad clunky because of the casting change. That kind of stuff bugs me.

Let's also keep in mind that Raimi did Spider-Man 3 against his will, insofar as his vision was irreconcilably compromised thanks to the studio's insistence on including Venom, and thus turning the film into an even more emo version Batman Forever.

I'm co-signing with JimmyArrow. TDK had not one, not 2, not 3, not 4, but 5 villians. Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Maroni, and the Mob/Dirty Cops. We all know how that turned out.

About Spiderman

Spiderman 3 was just a terrible movie. Lets just get this out of the way. Bad script, bad acting, lifeless concept. While Venom was unnecessary, that was almost the least of the movie's problems.

Black Widow could easily be used as one of the good guys right away. As for the "crowded" aspect, both Batman movies had multiple villains and side characters and they didn't have to sacrifice one bit of characterization.

Spider-man 3 was not too crowded, it was just sloppy!

@ sulaco

he means that he hope War Machine won't be like Nick Fury's cameo in iron Man 1 where he only shows up for a couple min at the very end. i have no idea what you were thinking.

i'm still worried though. An "impactful appearance" could mean that's he's only in the last 5 min of the movie, but he's the one who kills the bad guy at the end. or he bails out iron man at the very end or something. i hope this isnt the case!

1- I don't miss Howard.

2- How can the WAR MACHINE bit be the NICK FURY cameo of the film when you saw FURY talking to STARK at the coffee shop?

Did you forget that you actually saw FURY in the clip?
