Updated: Check out the first image of Matt Ryan as John Constantine

Mar. 13, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

UPDATE: First official image of Matt Ryan as Constantine added below!

NBC's Constantine pilot began filming this week, and now we have a first look at Matt Ryan as everyone's favorite cynical occult detective, John Constantine. The image was released by NBC for Slates for Sarah (a Facebook page dedicated to Sarah Elizabeth Jones, who died last month while working as a camera assistant on the Gregg Allman biopic MIDNIGHT RIDER), and I think fans of the comic are going to be very pleased with how Matt Ryan looks in costume as Constantine.

Now that's a John Constantine!

With the brown jacket, loose tie and blonde hair, Ryan looks almost exactly like the comic book version of the character. I know you can't judge a book by its cover, and an image of Matt Ryan as Constantine alone probably won't change anyone's opinion on the upcoming series, but so far, so good in my opinion. At least they got the look of the character down, unlike the 2005 film with Keanu Reeves.

Harold Perrineau, Lucy Griffiths and Charles Halford will also star in Constantine, with Neil Marshall (DOG SOLDIERS, THE DESCENT) directing the pilot from a script by David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone (The Mentalist).

Synopsis:

Constantine centers on John Constantine (Matt Ryan), an enigmatic and irreverent con man-turned-reluctant supernatural detective who is thrust into the role of defending us against dark forces from beyond. When Liv (Griffiths), the daughter of a late friend, is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her. Griffiths’ Liv is an offbeat young woman tired of her ordinary life who comes to discover that she has the ability of seeing the supernatural world among us, which makes her a key player in the battle between good and evil. Liv teams up with Constantine to save lives, master her power, and learn more about her late father. Perrineau will play Manny, an authoritative angel assigned to watch over Constantine who has the power to step into other people’s bodies, and although he is meant only to observe, Manny will not hesitate to help out if he can save a life. Halford will play Chas, Constantine’s oldest friend and staunch companion who possesses powerful survival skills that might possibly be supernatural.

Constantine (if picked up) could air as early as this fall on NBC.

Hopefully, after every puff he takes in the show with an invisible cigarette...timed after he's just sent a demon back to hell...he'll say...these things are gonna kill me.,.just to keep the anti's off their back. They're not always going to be able to hide his cigarette in the shadows.

By the way...if DC/WB's/whoever isn't careful, their cinematic universe won't need to be worried about how better Marvel's might be...they ought to be concerned about how bad their live action TV efforts are

Edward Kenway as John Constantine? Looks good. Needs more fag, though.
And when I said 'fag' I meant cigarettes. Somebody please photoshop one in.

So far so good!

Yup! That'll work! Now, here's hoping that the script remains faithful to to the comic as much as well.

The curling cigarette smoke in the official portrait is encouraging. I do hope we get to see Zatanna on this show.

I'm kinda bummed that Guillermo del Toro's Justice League Dark doesn't seem to be happening anymore, but hopefully some of what they planned for that show will manifest itself in this one.

Definitely looks the part. I hope this show is more Supernatural and Hannibal in terms of quality and style then something disappointing and boring like Grimm.

Great First Step

While it means little in the long run, the look of John Constantine is right on the money. The next step is that a preview of the show balance the supernatural elements with NBC sensibilities. My hope is that the show runners use Hannibal as a framework. That show really surprised me in how they are able to use the dark material and make it as edgy as is possible on network television, all while not compromising the story for shock value. Really looking forward to the possibility of another

Not too shabby - trenchcoat, dirty blonde hair, unkempt tie, what should be there is there. I wonder what "We love you Sarah" at the top of the clapper board means.

Looks like Constantine. Can't complain so far. Can only pray that Goyer as show runner doesn't fuck it up like he did with every other TV series he has produced.

I doubt it. If a movie has a chain smoker as the lead character, then it automatically gets an 'R-rating' by the MPAA. So I doubt NBC will allow it.

If they do, then we'll barely see him smoke, and they'll rehash the lung cancer plot from the movie asap.

Looks very promising - they definitely nailed the look
only downside I can see so far is the fact that its on NBC - I really wish this was on a network that was willing to "push" it more - AMC, FX, Netflix, etc

I dunno about that. Hannibal is on NBC, and it's definitely "MA"-level disturbing and violent.
