UPDATED: Check out the first image of Russell Crowe in Darren Aronofsky's Noah

Aug. 10, 2012by:

UPDATED: Higher res image of the original photo gives you a better look of Crowe in character.

The first look at Russell Crowe as NOAH in the film of the same name from director Darren Aronofsky has arrived and features an aged, scruffy vision of the Biblical character.  The film began shooting last month and will continue for some time before seeing theaters in March, 2014.

Take a look:

Crowe looks right at home here, ready to build a boat, collect some animals, and weather a storm.  With Aronofsky at the helm and screenwriter John Logan (GLADIATOR) on writing duty, I have no doubt that NOAH will bring the thunder when it hits the big screen.

The pic also stars Crowe's A BEAUTIFUL MIND co-star Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, Kevin Durand, Logan Lerman, and Douglas Booth. The cast alone is enough to plant me in the theater.  Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Aronofsky has been tweeting pics and updates on his Twitter account since the start of production, which you can follow here if you're so inclined.

NOAH sails into history on March 28, 2014.

From the set...

Extra Tidbit: Would you rather have seen Michael Fassbender or Christian Bale in the role of Noah or are you happy with Crowe?

While I like both Bale and Fassbender, when Crowe was announced I felt like they could stop looking. There are few actors who seem quite as at home in a big Hollywood epic.

Love how weathered Crowe looks, he pulls off that rugged thing really well. And the set photo with the lightning is badass!

I like Russell Crowe as Noah...

... but I would prefer if Crowe also starred in another movie about boats, if you know what I mean.

Mphh.

I'm actually looking forward to this (Aronofsky is awesome), but that pic is not "an aged, scruffy vision of the Biblical character". It's Russel Crowe. It's Master and Commander with a beard.

I think Crowe is a good choice. I guess we'll see.

already not a fan...Noah is based on a man who was in the center of the world, Africa of now, kenya area, as most of the ancient bible is based if you read it correctly. Based on the climate of the times and the culture, I just don't see the character being Caucasian. Noah is of the house of Yosef lineage. Yosef was a dark skinned man as they stem from moses who grew up hidden in the royal family of egypt. very dark people back then before alexandria era took over

well Noah was 100 years old or so in the story from the bible, but people also aged differently during this time so he could work for the role!

Agree with Jedd

The picture of the Ark getting struck by lightning is pretty bad ass. Reminds me...didn't Caveziel get struck once or twice by lightning when filing The Passion? There might be something to these movies after all. Hmmm....
BTW - cool pic of Crowe as well.

I like Crowe, but I've never seen him do humble well. He always seems to have this intimidating intensity about him. Fassbender would have been my pick.

obviously...

this will be a saga to behold, but Noah? We already know what's ganna happen, there's a flood and all the mythical creatures that Noah was afraid of approaching all die. Oh wait, that's not it? Well I guess there are spoilers abound in the Bible.
