A few months ago we brought the domestic teaser for Wong Kar-Wai's martial arts biopic THE GRANDMASTER and now a brand new full length trailer has been released. In typical biopic fashion, the phrase "based on a true story" is uttered which is somewhat hard to believe with the CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON style theatrics on display. With fight choreography by Yuen Woo-Ping (KILL BILL, THE MATRIX) and the visual mastery of Wong Kar-Wai, this seems like a must see.

The story told in this film has been made before in several movies with the title IP MAN, but this is the first that purports to be the full story of the Kung Fu master who trained Bruce Lee. Tony Leung plays Ip Man in THE GRANDMASTER alongside Zhang Ziyi who looks to be no older than when she starred in CROUCHING TIGER.

THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary kung fu master, Ip Man. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China's last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South,

I am definitely suckered in by how gorgeously filmed this movie looks. As a fan of 2046, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, and CHUNGKING EXPRESS, this is a must see. I am still waiting for a studio to really give Wong Kar-Wai another English language project (his first was MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS) so audiences who shy away from subtitles can be in awe of his craftsmanship.

Already a hit in China, THE GRANDMASTER opens in the US on August 23rd.

Extra Tidbit: Does every trailer for a movie released by The Weinstein Company have the exact same voice-over?

Looks good But...

Looks good and all but I doubt it could be any betterthan Donnie Yens Ip Man and Ip Man 2.

Fantastic movie, but the trailer I think may lead to disappointment. This is really more of a romantic and dramatic look at Ip Man's life, as well as some other real life martial arts figures. There are a few fight scenes sprinkled in here, and all fantastically filmed and choreographed, but this is not really an action film. It is, nonetheless, another great Wong Kar Wai movie, and definitely worth watching. The train sequence is simply breathtaking. However, if you're look for more of an

Word of warning

Seen this one a while ago, and while it's pretty good, It's more of a slow-burn drama, which just happens to have some great fighting sequences in there.

I never get why these international/US trailers so often omit dialogue from foreign films. Are they trying to fool people who don't like to read subtitles during movies?

I heard Wong Kar-Wai. That's all I needed to decide to see this.

Fu*k Me...

This film looks cool. Kar-Wai hasn't done an action film since Ashes of Time (as far as I know) and that film was... interesting to say the least. Yet, I can't complain about it as it is what lead to Chunking Express and Fallen Angels being created. In any case, this looks really cool. And visually stunning. The man knows how to make anything look pretty. I'm a bit disappointed that Chris Doyle isn't the DP but the film looks great regardless. In any case, I am counting the minutes till this

PS - Why no love for Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and Happy Together in the article? These three are arguably his best work. They're my favorites anyway. As well as In The Mood For Love.
