Check out the return of director Joe Dante with the trailer for The Hole

Aug. 27, 2012by: Alex Maidy

The trailer for Joe Dante's THE HOLE will only be considered "new" for American audiences since the film had a theatrical release in Canada almost two years ago. But, here it is. Originally shot in 3D, this trailer shows no indication as to whether it will be released in the format.

Joe Dante has not directed a theatrical film since 2003's LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION. He has toiled in television directing off and on. THE HOLE was supposed to be his return to the big screen. Despite positive reviews from critics it has been sitting on a shelf until now.

Plot: Susan and her sons Dane and Lucas Thompson move from Brooklyn to Bensonville, in the countryside. Dane is upset with the constant changes of address and the family has lived in many cities. Lucas and Dane befriend their next door neighbor, the gorgeous Julie and the brothers find a bottomless hole in the basement of their house locked with several padlocks. They take the locks off and soon they are haunted by their darkest fears. Further, they believe that the hole might be a gateway to hell.

Starring Teri Polo, THE HOLE looks more like a remake of THE GATE (a personal favorite) and not all that scary. But, Joe Dante is the man who brought us GREMLINS, EXPLORERS, THE 'BURBS, and INNERSPACE. The guy deserves our attention.

THE HOLE will hit theaters on

September 28th.

Extra Tidbit: THE HOLE features uncredited rewrites by Guillermo Del Toro.

Dante's best since Gremlins 2.

This is a must if you're a fan of 80's kids adventure flicks.

Straight to VHS

This is just bad enough to make me want to watch The Gate again. A mishmash of hokey horror rejects with a ten cent cast. Pass.

Finally!

I saw this at the Toronto Film Festival maybe 3 years back. But the fire alarm went off in the theater right at the climax, and we were never brought back in to finish the film. I've been wondering how it ends for years, and now and ending is in sight!

I saw this awhile ago, and really enjoyed it. Laugh all you want, but the film does have its share of scary scenes.

Wow has this really not come out over in the states yet?

It's a genuinely enjoyable throwback to the Joe Dante of the eighties and that whole "kids have a scary adventure without parents around" kind of schtick.

The ending I felt was a bit over-blown, but it's really quite a lot of fun getting there. It won't change anyone's life, but it's worth catching and even and still has an appeal to adults regardless of it's young teen/kids cast.
