There's something deeply satisfying about the capture/torture of a serial killer, as we're so accustomed to seeing the bad guy "have his way" with his victims and usually end up captured or killed rather quickly and without much punishment for his crimes. Such is the case with BIG BAD WOLVES, an Isreali revenge thriller from filmmakers Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, whose previous film, RABIES, garnered the duo considerable recognition. Their new film is another step in that direction, having garnered a lot of positive attention at the Tribecca Film Festival, leading to a distribution deal with Magnet. Personally, I love seeing the bad guys suffer a little (or a lot) and this looks to be a solid entry to the revenge genre.

Take a look:

Here's the synopsis:

A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder

A release date is still TBD, but expect it to hit U.S. and surrounding countries later this year.

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite revenge movie? I'm still partial to Shawshank Redemption, myself, even though it's not actually a revenge movie per se. However, every time I see the Warden remove that poster and find that Andy escaped, I am through the moon with "f*ck yeah's!"

The most recent revenge films that I have seen that I have enjoyed are Man on Fire, Death Sentence, and The Punisher (Thomas Jane version).

And does Drive count?

Although it's not strictly a revenge film I loved the bit in Enter the Dragon where Bruce Lee beat the shit out of O'Hara - the guy that made Bruce's sister commit suicide. Gladiator would probably be my favourite revenge movie though.

My recommendation to fellow Jobloers is to check out a film called Gangs of Wasseypur. I saw this recently, a 5 hour epic (divided in 2). It's an Indian film but not the traditional type of one with song and dance, the style is more like Slumdog millionaire.

Mike Hodges' "Get Carter" for the unapologetic, mayhem (Jack Carter's almost as bad at the people he's after). "I Saw the Devil" for its sheer inventiveness. And "In the Bedroom" for giving what feels like the most realistic depiction of revenge I've seen.

Looks real good.

One of my favorite recent revenge movies is I Saw The Devil. Might make a good companion piece to this flick if the trailers are any indication. Good men gone real bad.
