Check out this new image from the Pixar short Day & Night

05.05.2010

As has traditionally been the case with all of Pixar's films to date, TOY STORY 3 will have an animated short attached before it when it's released in theaters this June. The short, called DAY & NIGHT, was revealed for the first time in a promotional title card back in March. It didn't give us much to go on other than that the animation was to be 2D on top of being a somewhat stylistic throwback to stuff from the 60s. Here's the official synopsis:

When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot. But as they discover each other's unique qualities–and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world–the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.

See what I highlighted above? The animation of our main characters will in fact be 2D, but within them will be 3D imagery as can be seen in the new pic revealed today up above (which you can click to get a bigger look at over at Pixar Talk).

Seems cool, no? Knowing Pixar's charming inventiveness (especially with their shorts), I can't wait to see what they do here.

DAY & NIGHT can be seen in front of TOY STORY 3 which opens on June 18th.

Don't remember what it's called but the one on the Wall-E DVD with the magician.

Also, Day & Night's 3D in 2D illustrations is pure awesomeness. Can't wait to see it.

Sounds good, Pixar always comes up with the most random idea and turn it into gold.

I love Presto. Me & my daughter laugh hysterically everytime we see it. Reminds me those old Looney Tunes one shot cartoon stories.

For the Birds, Lifted, Presto, One Man Band, and Partly Cloudy all come to mind... but as to my all-time favorite, I am somehow always drawn back to Gerri's Game. It's just so wonderful in the purest form. This new one sounds particularly artistically daring. Can't wait to see it!

Teddy Newton!

I think the most exciting part of this new short is that it was written and directed by Teddy Newton. Newton is a character designer and he also does the credit sequences for Brad Bird's films. I watched a special feature on the Iron Giant DVD that gave some insight into Newton's unique mind and credited him for some genius ideas. Seeing this in short form should be fun!

I like the style they are going with in this one. I'm glad they are going 2D with this. My favorite short by pixar would probably be Boundin which I believe was played before The Incredibles.

So do I have to be the one who points out that the image could be misconstrued in a really immature way?

For extra tidbit, there's one Pixar short where two old men play chess in the park. I can't remember the name but I really love that shorts.

ace

It looks really elegant. Simple, well executed. It will more than likely be ace.
