Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo are joining the Vacation reboot

Mar. 28, 2013by:

While it seemed to be a natural decision, it now is looking pretty certain that the reboot of NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION will feature appearances from Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo. Ever since the new film was announced with Ed Helms as a grown up Rusty, I have been holding out hope they would treat it as a true sequel to the classic films and get the original Griswolds back into the plot.

The new VACATION will follow grown-up son Rusty (Helms), who now has his own family misadventures on the road, which includes making a pit stop to see his mom and dad.

Variety reports that the two actors are "in talks" to reprise their roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold for the new VACATION and that the roles are pretty much just cameos. Beverly D'Angelo and Chevy Chase played the Griswolds on the big screen most recently in the underrated VEGAS VACATION as well as on the small screen in a series of Old Navy commercials. D'Angelo has steadily worked on TV while Chevy Chase co-stars on NBC's COMMUNITY, a role he has burned major bridges on with bizarre behind the scenes rants.

I am all for a new VACATION movie as long as screenwriting directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (HORRIBLE BOSSES) keep the tone in line with the National Lampoon films.

R, not pg-13

I hope it's r-rated, but studio head might not go for it as teens are clearly the only people who go to the movies anymore... Also, extra tidbit, the first one!

Then it can no longer be called a reboot right? On the extra tidbit, it's gotta be Christmas Vacation hands down.

yes... but technically no, since (should this spawn more Vacation sequels) the "reboot" would feature Rusty Griswold, and it's basically the exact same plot (Griswolds go to Wallyworld) as the original movie.

Christmas Vacation definitely. Christmas season doesn't start for me until I watch the movie.

This would actually be classified as a spin-off/sequel since it's continuing the same storyline and not starting back from the begining with a new cast and crew.

I agree with you 100%, but the reason is because younger people are more familiar with Helms and Hollywood execs have their heads up their asses and only care about making movies that are accessible to people born after 1994.

I dont understand why they are making this movie, but I am excited to see Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo are in the movie....even if it just a cameo appearance.

Disagree with the article, and also have no interest in the film.

Chase got fed up with the direction they were taking his character, and I can't blame him. The show went from being cleverly smug to smugly clever, and is pretty hard to watch these days. As for the Vacation reboot - Ed Helms really grates me ever since he took over for Steve Carrell on The Office. He also doesn't have ANY of the comedic sensibilities that I'd expect Rusty to have, given his nature as a kid following in his father's sarcastic footsteps in the older films. Helms plays [link]

Helms plays [link] characters and it sometimes works for the movies he makes (like The Hangover), but Vacation needs some smarminess behind it. I'm also not too interested in this if Chase is being relegated to a mere cameo.

@phil - I have seen Cedar Rapids, and I enjoyed it. But, again, Helms was playing a very naive character (I wrote that in my initial post, but because I used hyphens, it tried to convert it to a URL link). He's good at playing naive schmucks basically, goodhearted guys who are a bit clueless. To that extent, and that extent only, I can see him doing a good job in Vacation as a well meaning father who is beaten every step of the way. BUT...and this is a big but...Chevy Chase's Clark Griswold was

BUT...and this is a big but...Chevy Chase's Clark Griswold was always a bit selfish, especially in the first movie. It was his pride and ego that sort of caused him to go off the rails as the movie progressed, and who can forget the scenes with the supermodel. That has always been Chase's comedic MO, and Helms is completely different in that regard. Rusty Griswold was always portrayed as a wiseass in his father's footsteps, and I don't see Helms fulfilling that role very well. I can see him doing a good family vacation gone awry movie, but to me, it won't feel like a legitimate Vacation movie. And without Chase at the forefront I'm just not interested. Hate on him all you want, but he made those movies.

Even though I think this film is a waste of everyone's talents, the film gets credit for at least having Chase and Beverly back reprising their roles even if it's just cameos.

Disappointed that Chase got fed up with Community considering he was one of my favorite characters on the show.

Orig Vacation, with Christmas a close second.
Impressive how 30 years hasn't stopped Beverly D'Angelo from being an incredible MILF.
