Chevy Chase considers new Vacation and Fletch projects

It’s weird to think that there’s a generation of kids growing up right now who think of Chevy Chase as “that weird old guy on Community.” Perhaps the actor wants to remind people of his former glory, which is why he’s talking about new projects based off his old films.

First, there’s the news that he’s got an idea for a new “Vacation” adventure. I’ll let him explain it (via Collider):

“I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy [Quaid, who plays Cousin Eddie] somewhere who’s been left there from an old ‘Survivor’ series.”

I’ll admit, I laughed at the “Survivor” part. Would the Griswold’s be a larger family now? I imagine that there would be grandkids involved at this point.

And what of the rumored resurgence of FLETCH? Chevy is on board, but with conditions.

“I mean look, I’m not gonna do Fletch unless I’m Fletch, if they start writing something for a kid who’s Fletch and I’m just helping out, ‘Bye.’ I mean, there’s no reason why, at my age, I can’t still be Fletch. I’ve always been getting this impression that they’d like me to be mentoring a younger Fletch type thing.”

I mean, you can’t blame the guy for not wanting to give the role away. Do either of these sound promising to you, or is Chevy Chase not the comedian he used to be?
