Chevy Chase drops out of Community and falls back into obscurity

Nov. 21, 2012by:

I don't watch Community. I gave it a go for the first few episodes and it just wasn't taking. I like Joel McHale and most of the cast members, especially the sweet young ladies on the show, but the comedy was not taking. I'm over it. Don't try to convince me. I know that lots of folks dig it and I'm cool with that. So, the news that Chevy Chase is leaving the show may or may not devastate you. If you've been following the news of his on-set tirades and clashes with series creator Dan Harmon, then you'll know that his involvement in the sitcom has been anything but pleasant (although pleasantly entertaining).

It does me no good to report on Chase continuing down the spiral of his late-in-the-game work as I grew up loving his work and continue to enjoy his classics to this day. I wouldn't be surprised if I pop in CHRISTMAS VACATION this weekend and soak in the golden years of the once-awesome comedian. However, it seems that Chase may not be totally in the wrong here, as many of his clashes were cleared by castmates who witnessed many of the events that caused his outburts, which culminated in Harmon saying, "F*ck you, Chevy" at the first season wrap party, prompting this lovely phone message from Chase to Harmon.

Apparently, Chase wasn't thrilled with the show at all, telling the Huffington Post UK, It was a big mistake! I just sort of hung around because I have three daughters and a wife, and I figured out I might as well make some bread, every week, so I can take care of them in the way they want The hours are hideous, and its still a sitcom on television, which is probably the lowest form of television.

I wonder if Chase carries around sticks of dynamite and a lighter for every bridge he crosses...

Chase has already filmed a large chunk of the episodes for the fourth season, which premieres on February 7, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: For fans of the show, what do you think of Chase's departure?

When I first heard he had an argument I figured Harmon might have been a D-Bag. But even after Harmon left Chase just keeps walking off the set and being inappropriate. Just go the hell home if you don't want to read your lines and collect your fat paycheck. But please make another Fletch and Vacation movie. Thanks, Chevy.

He may have a point about sitcoms. laugh tracks dont help my opinion of them, I dont need hints about where to laugh

Since the show Community does not have Laugh Tracks, I fail to see your point or where Chevy Chase spoke about said laugh tracks,

However, he is not in a traditional "sitcom" Community does not use a laugh track. It lets the viewer determine whats funny and what to laugh at....or not.

Sad but oh well

I really do see where he is coming from. His character is always written to be a dumb bad guy and that can get really frustrating to work with week after week. As a dream set up for season 4, i was hoping Pierce would leave the group to become the groups business professor. He would have a new dynamic to work with that fit in well with the established character. And his part would be diminished to recurring guest star status (like John Oliver or Michael K. Williams).

Hopefully he at least

Hopefully he at least will have a proper send off. Something respectful.

Don't know much about the behind the scene antincs, and don't really give a shit......Strictly as a Community fanatic, I'm so very, VERY disappointed. Pierce Hawthorne was one of my favorite characters from Community. Looks like there's little hope of it being continued beyond the upcoming season.....No six seasons and a movie :(

And FYI, Community is absolutely the total opposite of a traditional sitcom. Paul, if you ever have enough time to waste, watch episode 21 of season 1....I think

Love what you do

I do think he is great on the show, but it is hard seeing Fletch looking like an aging hipster.
He got to do claymation, video game, western, action, hero, anti-hero, villain, etc. Creatively he got a chance to do a large range. The aging stars that embrace the wildcard roles have to be having a blast as they can get away with anything. If he is not happy move on because that show needs faith to keep taking risks. If he wants to do movies he needs to forget about who he is and focus on what he

Although a financially shaky Fletch doing puff pieces on local restaurants health violations for a local news channel, because he refused to be a blogger for his paper. Making ends meet by conning people with his age and uncovering a big food or big pharm conspiracy that no one believes because he is now a hack could be good.

Mr. Chase

DAMN CHEVY ! I seriously dont understand him, I think he should have tired to work things out....I mean he hasnt been getting the movie projects that he used to , sadly....but then again maybe his anger was justified in this case. Above all I am disapointed in this news . I think Chevy should have been treated better because he was the BIG name in the series . On the flip side of this...did Chevy blow things a bit out of proportion or not?

I honestly believe Joel McHale is the big name in this series. I love Chevy Chase but he really hasn't been a big name since the early to mid 90s. But he is a legend that may draw older people in to watch Community, who might then tune out when they see it's not as retarded as most sitcoms. It's clever and witty.

Writing him out will be an easy fix. He's a good character, but will not compromise the greatness of the show for me at all. The rest of the cast are great, but i love Troy and Abed. They remind me so much of J.D. and Turk. I love old Chevy Chase movies, my first being "Nothing But Trouble", but maybe he should retire if he cant get along with people.

Chevy shoots himself in the foot

i think its crazy he'd quit considering its only relevant thing hes done in two decades and they even fired creator Harmon to keep him on! I guess theres no pleasing some people and Chevy's got a history of being a dick, i think the show will be just fine without him.

Sad to see him go. Loved his character and am a big fan of his. I thought he brought alot to the show with his comedic chops, but if he is going to cause problems for the show and the other cast members then I say good riddance. I always thought he could have been a father figure to Jeff, but that will never happen now (even though Jeff and Pierce did have their moments throughout the show).

Question is I wonder how they write Pierce off the show. Maybe he dies?

I love Community but it's not a perfect show. It's true that some characters are better served then others and Pierce certainly had the short end of the stick. However, Ken Jeong had an even shorter end and he never complained. It was always a downer to hear all the cast be so pleased with the show, and feel so lucky to be part of it, only to arrive to Chevy and feel like he wanted to be anywhere but there.

Dan Harmon should have taken care of it. His biggest failure was to ignore the fact

Dan Harmon should have taken care of it. His biggest failure was to ignore the fact that a change was needed and making the situation even worse with his public antics. Now that the matter has been taken care off, the show can concentrate on the people that want to make it work.

Chevy doesn't exactly have the reputation of a nice, level headed person, but if he wants to quit the show, good for him. Even as a big fan of the show, it's his decision to make and the show is pretty much cancelled already.
