Chiwetel Ejiofor confirmed to play Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange

06.11.2015

Earlier this year we heard that Chiwetel Ejiofor was up for a major role in Scott Derrickson's DOCTOR STRANGE, and now it's confirmed that Ejiofor will be playing Baron Mordo. The Baron and Doctor Strange are both taught by The Ancient One (who Tilda Swinton is in talks to play) and despite being a straight-up villain in the comics, it's said that the cinematic iteration of Mordo will not necessarily be villainous and that he may end up being a mixture of several characters from Doctor Strange's universe.

As per usual, Marvel seems to be doing a bang-up job of its casting. Ejiofor was apparently in the running to play a Bond villain, so perhaps the man is looking to lighten up his filmography a bit and have some fun. Either way, I'm not sure how the general populace is going to take to a Doctor Strange film, despite the mighty Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role. It should be interesting to see how it plays out, and what ties, if any, the film may have with the rest of the MCU.

DOCTOR STRANGE will open in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Loved the guy since I first saw him in...well it was either Serenity or Redbelt - both fun movies. Still, is this movie going to cast an actual Asian in any of the key roles? Heck, at this point, they might as well make Strange's mystic powers originate from some ancient US hocus-pocus thingamajig and scrap the Asian angle all together.

Great actor. And if they go the villainous route he was good as the bad guy in Four Brothers, so I can dig it.

I'm a little bit bummed by this news, because he was always my first choice for Green Lantern, even before going the Hal route with Ryan Reynolds. He would have been better than most of those I currently see rumored for the part.
Anyway, I have no idea who this character is, so really doesn't mean much to me. Hopefully this will be another pleasant surprise from Marvel like Guardians of the Galaxy.

It already has a tie in

Dr. Strange already has a tie in to the MCU. Steven Strange was on the list of targets that Agent Sitwell listed for the Project Insight target list when Capt. America, Black Widow and Falcon had him on the roof top. He's been named dropped already in the MCU, so it already has a tie-in of some nature. That being said, I like the casting.

Call me a racist I don't give a fuck. I love this actor, he should have been Black Panther in my mind, but I hate this casting for the obvious reason. I hate gender/race swapping to pander. I'm a purist plain and simple. I state it in every article featuring changes. Some I am more open to than others I admit, altering a costume vs's altering an origin (Ultron) or altering a race/gender. I want to see the characters presented in the way that they were created and rose to popularity, not have

I want to see the characters presented in the way that they were created and rose to popularity, not have their popularity usurped to pander to a sociopolitical buzzword. I'm not against diversity, I'm all for it, but what I am against is taking from one to give to another. I want to see original characters created and elevated, or other characters within the vast stable of Marvel/DC elevated to show diversity as opposed to stealing from one to give to another to make it look like they care about it. And by the way, I'd be screaming equally as loud if Blade, Luke Cage, War Machine, and Black Panther got cast as Asian or White, or Latino. I'd be screaming equally as loud if Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Captain Marvel (Danvers not Mar-Vell) got cast as a man. So go ahead bring on the calls of racism, flames, and down votes I'll wear them like a badge of honor.

I don't think being a purist is racist, hell I get it. And for the most part I will agree when it comes to beloved characters. I think Marvel gets that with their beloved main characters, hence Peter Parker version versus Miles, yet I think they have some wiggle room when it comes to lesser known characters. Hence the gender and racial changes being mentioned for this. Beyond comic book aficionados I don't think anyone will notice these changes only if the good doctor himself were changed, even

But a person like the Human Torch, that is a different ball game many people know who he is even casual fans know Marvels first family are white brother and sister so that change is huge and one I don't care for, even when I think Jordan is a great actor.

EXTRA TIDBIT

Some of you already know this, but for those who didn't: Ejiofor and Cumberbatch co-starred in 12 Years a Slave.

Marvel is just on a roll with their casting. The talent so far has been terrific with this film with Derrickson helming, and while also having the powerful trio of Cumberbatch, Swinton, and now Ejiofor as well.

Out of all of the new comic book films and characters joining the MCU, I'm probably most excited for Doctor Strange. Exciting to see how this film affects the rest of the already established MCU and also how it's going to bring the whole supernatural/magic aspect into a much bigger,

great casting. Dr. Strange feels like it is going to be a major hit for Marvel.Great talent, and fresh, innovative story. Im not a huge fan of horror films but I was very pleased with Derrickson's Sinister. Dr. Strange will probably be on the Guardians end of the spectrum, as oppose to Reed's Ant Man

Let's see how this goes

Fans will either criticize Marvel for taking creative liberaties with making a traditionally white character and making him black, or they'll embrace this casting sayiing Ejiofor's amazing actor will overshadow the race swap. Either way, it's going to be nice to see some of the hypocrisy.
