Chow directs Hornet!

09.19.2008

Stephen Chow For months now, there's been speculation that Asian superstar Stephen Chow would be taking up the mantle of Bruce Lee as Britt Reid's aka The Green Hornet's deadly sidekick Kato in the upcoming feature adaptation of the 1966 TV show. Truth be told, it was mostly Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who're writing and producing the film, saying how much they'd like Chow to play the role.

Rogen is officially getting his wish because Sony/Columbia recently announced that not only will Chow be starring as Kato but he'll be making his English-language directorial debut on the film as well. And if you've seen SHAOLIN SOCCER, KUNG FU HUSTLE or CJ7, you know the guy knows a thing or two about directing.

When asked about starring in and directing the film, Chow had this to say: "I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously, I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true. I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years. I'm looking forward to working with Seth, Evan, Neal, and the team at Sony, and I'm eager to get started."

They currently have the film slated for a June 25th, 2010 release.

AWESOME!! FUCKING AWESOME!!!

Now this is one twist that I didn't see coming. And it makes total sense! I'm just happy they were able to snag Chow for the part of Kato, but directing? It's a no-brainer!

Rogen is a genius

Seth Rogen+ The Green Hornet + Stephen Chow= the most anticipated film that has not been made yet. I can imagine it'll have some great action scenes and some funny dialogue and possibly some good joints.

This is the most fantastic news I have heard in days! I love Rogen and Chow's work so much. I'm excited and also scared to see how the two preform together.

Can't wait!

As much as I like Rogen, I just couldn't see how he'd bring about a Green Hornet film. But judging from the creativty and energy found in Kung Fu Hustle, Honestly NOW I see it! And I just can't wait!!!

This is awesome to hear. I had fun and laughed watching kung fu hustle and i've heard this dude is pretty funny.

Teaming with Rogen and Goldberg for a movie like this smells all kinds of awesome.

All I can say is that I'm glad Apatow isn't on this one. It's bad enough that Seth Rogen is attached, but if Apatow was on it too, I wouldn't even consider this thing to be dumpster-worthy.

Should be...interesting

I have no idea how to feel about this, seeing as how I never even heard of Green Hornet until rumblings about a movie began. That said, my curiosity has been piqued, and I will be seeing this when it comes out.

Careful what you wish for...

God I hope that half an hour into the movie Seth Rogen and gang don't break into a song and dance routine. Just because a director knows about visual flair or art direction doesn't make him a good storyteller. Hopefully the script is good though.

And just so I don't get all sorts of complaints on this, I think the casting of Chow is great, just not as blindly optimistic as some of you on the directing...

I'M IMPRESSED

Rarely have I seen such an amazing decision made by a studio. Having Chow star and direct is a brilliant move. This just became one of my most anticipated movies to see!

Hellz fuckin yeah!

I'm more than ecstatic, being a fan of his work since childhood. I just hope his skills don't get "lost in translation" as what happened to Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam, and the Pang Bros.
