Chris Evans comments on Michael B. Jordan taking over The Human Torch role

Apr. 1, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Much has been made about the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in THE FANTASTIC FOUR reboot coming from CHRONICLE director Josh Trank, some of it negative, some of it postive. But, what does the most recent actor to play the character have to say about Jordan's casting? Chris Evans, who played the character in both the 2005 film FANTASTIC FOUR and the 2007 sequel FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER discussed his feelings on "passing the torch" to Jordan, saying:

"It's so funny, you almost feel precious over the role that you don't want someone else to do it. But when you hear someone phenomenal is doing it, it's very exciting like you almost can't wait."

Evans went on to praise Jordan, while still feeling a bit nostalgic about the role:

"I couldn't even give that guy any advice if I wanted, that guy is so good. It's exciting to see what he's going to do, because I know he's going to reinvent it in a way that I could never have imagined. It's almost like we're sharing, the character is ours. I feel like I'm connected with him in a way, It's a nice feeling."

Although Evans himself seems to have grown weary of the acting trade and set his sights on the directing chair he still seems genuinely enthused about the roles he's played, be it The Human Torch or Captain America. Evans is set to don the red, white, and blue for three more Marvel films, including the currently shooting AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. Jordan, too, is now locked into the multi-picture shuffle, as he is set to star in the new reboot and already planned sequel to THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR opens in theaters on June 19, 2015.

Honestly...

I'm more worried about Jamie Bell as The Thing. I see that working about as well as Topher Grace playing Venom...

The Human Torch is the only interesting/fun character in the Fantastic Four. Regardless of whether the movie sucks or sucks bad, I hope Jordan gets the same boost in his career that Evans got by taking this role.

I feel bad for Michael B Jordan. No matter how well he does, this is bound to just flop and not because of him or his acting skills. I hope it doesn't screw up his career going forward.

first two didn't screw up Evans' career, so I'm optimistic

I actually like the two Fantastic Four. They are light-hearted and don't take itself too seriously. My only disappointment is that they made Galactus into some galactic storm cloud. In terms of casting, Chris Evans was the perfect Johnny Storm.

I agree - fun movies the whole family can sit down and watch.
Ruining Galactus was TERRIBLE tho.

I know! I remember sitting in theater watching the movie and when the third act reveals Galactus. I was thinking "That's it???".

Making Galactus "relatively more realistic" is particularly perplexing once one realises how utterly silly the rest of the movie is. I don't hate either of the films, nor do I think it's a good idea to make the Fantastic Four all dark and gritty, but the overall result just felt too campy and dated. With Rise of the Silver Surfer, it seems they blew their effects budget creating an (admittedly awesome-looking) Surfer, so the rest of the visual effects left a lot to be desired.

Even though Evans gives his blessing, I'm still disappointed about the new Fantastic Four reboot. There is not one positive thing the the film has going for it. Jordan is a good actor, but in no way should he have been casted as the Human Torch.

I'll always see Evans in the role considering he was perfect casting and was easily the best part of the two films.

I always thought that Evans would want to forget he ever played the Human Torch, as opposed to feeling that it was precious.

Well... he was the best part of the original films. And it seems like Jordan will be the best part of the new film that is otherwise poorly cast.

To be fair, it was his breakout role and it established him as a leading actor. He certainly wouldn't have gotten Captain America without it so I'm sure he does remember it fondly, however crap those movies were.

I'm not thrilled with the F4 reboot, but Michael B. Jordan is an actor worth getting excited about.

I agree that he was an excellent Johnny Storm, it just seems like the kind of thing an actor might be embarrassed about. Not quite on the scale of Clooney and Batman and Robin, but you get my drift. I actually really want a Losers sequel, he was hilarious/awesome in that flick. It's too bad that's unlikely.

The Fantastic Four films aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. Sure, they're not the greatest superhero films ever, but I thought they captured the spirit enough and they were alot of fun (and still are).

ill go one up on soloist - I enjoyed them. They were fun movies - remember the day when we had fun movies - where you didn't have to question life, or have everything happen at night.

Also Ben Grimm was AWESOME! Evans was great too. Silver Surfer was really done well and I thought they were fun family entertainment.

They F-ed up galactus for sure and that really sucked a lot, but they screwed him up about the same amount the F-ed up mandarin - only iron man 3 got a pass for some reason

Thanks Bobafett2 and j-man. Both Fanatastic Four films and Green Lantern are just films that are pure fun and are films that don't have to rely on being all dark and brooding.

I liked both the FF movies and both the Ghost Rider movies. I even liked Daredevil when it came out but when I see Jennifer Garner as Elektra I can't help but think of the bad Elektra sequel and that ruins it for me.
