Chris Evans to star in a film with only one line of dialogue?

08.03.2011by:

In 2009, writer Chad St. John made the Black List with MOTOR CITY, his tale of revenge that was notable for one particular hook: it contains only one line of dialogue throughout the whole movie. The script has been bouncing around struggling to find traction, until now when things seem to be heating up. Albert Hughes, who recently left Warner Bros.' adaptation of AKIRA, is in talks to direct with an offer out to Chris Evans to star in the lead role.

Unfortunately, MOTOR CITY won't be very silent by the time it makes it to theaters. The script was picked up by Joel Silver and St. John rewrote his initial draft with the note to "add more dialogue." Both scripts still exist and St. John told ScriptShadow last year, "We still go back and forth as to which version is the right one to get made. I suspect it might be a version that combines the no dialogue and dialogue versions. We’ll see."

The entire premise of the film was pitched as a "silent revenge movie" so I'm not sure what adding dialogue does for the film but there's a lot that Joel Silver does to his films lately that I don't really understand.

Right now there's just an offer out to Evans who is presumably fielding many offers after a successful turn as CAPTAIN AMERICA. Frankly I think the better Evans/Hughes match-up would have been on AKIRA as Evans seems to be a decent compromise for Kaneda (certainly a far better choice than Brad Pitt).

Add more dialogue?

The script obviously sells it self with one line of dialogue. Although with Evans in the lead you might have to add dialogue. I don't see him pulling off a movie with one line. Michael Shannon however could make it look easy. Get him and your golden. Oh wait Joel Silver is not gonna work either unless he pulls his head out of his ass. Come on Joel! Make it gritty and raw with someone who can carry a movie with just one line. (i.e. Michael Shannon) You know I'm right! :P

Things recently heard at Joel Silver's office:

"I like Jaws.... let's just do it without the shark."

"Do we really need all these muppets in The Muppets?"

"Could his parents not die... that would make this 'Batman' movie really depressing."

If it's only one line wouldn't it be monologue?

Ya wouldn't only having one dialogue scene be the reason its on the black lists, im starting to think movies now are becoming too talkative, I think faster was a decent movie because the rocks character only had a few scenes of dialogue, it creates more suspense.

What happen to Joel Silver?

Seriously the guy gave us so many good films Matrix, my mind is blank so I can't think of others.

But this film sounds cool. Keep it with one word or even 4 or 5 words of dialogue and have a lot of cool fist pounding action, and cool music to carry the movie. If it doesn't have those I think it could fail.

I don't see why people are complaining...

This film's one line of dialogue will probably be more worthwhile than anything said in Transformers 3.

I can't remember - do explosions count as dialogue?

Cool

My only stipulation is that he must be fully nude the entire film.

It would be the absolute opposite of his usual characters, why not.
Guess the movie that comes to mind is "Rise of Valhalla" with Mads Michelsen.

Still waiting on Evans and Edgar Wright to make ACTION DOCTOR, that movie would be utterly epic.

sounds cool... why are you complaining about Evans though?

the man that is apparently out to ruin every movie out there (is he on his man-period) is not Evans... it's Joel Silver.

He'll probably want to recast Evans with someone with more 'culture' to them too ;)

...and then we're going to team Evans' character up with a visible, ethnic minority to really get this movie off the ground.

Technically

You could add narration and still say you're not adding dialogue. And of course there'd probably be some grunting.

Sounds absolutely retarded with or without dialogue. It will make no money.

Joel Silver yet again twists the knife of mediocrity and sameness into the back of an inspired action movie script.

What?! Why would they want to add dialogue when the selling point of the film is that it has none / only one line of it? That's like suddenly showing shots of Cloverfield taken with a full-blown HD camera from Michael Bay-like angles. It just doesn't make any sense.

This could be either good or bad. Silent revenge movie makes me think of Faster with The Rock. Supposing that The Rock didn't have any dialogue, his acting conveys a man of revenge in his heart and it works. Hopefully this "silent" would at least have some sound effects into it.
