Chris Miller on the "huge pressure" of directing the Han Solo anthology film

08.07.2015

It's no small task to make a Star Wars film, especially when you're tackling one of the most popular characters of the entire franchise, but Chris Miller and Phil Lord (THE LEGO MOVIE) will be doing exactly that. Last month it was announced that the pair would direct a Star Wars Anthology film centering around everyone's favourite scoundrel, Han Solo.

Chris Miller spoke with IGN during the Television Critics Association Press Tour about how he and Phil Lord are approaching this monumental task:

It’s a huge pressure. We always try and find something that's gonna make us... give a fire to our bellies and do a really good job. And this feels like there’s a lot of pressure to not screw this up. So we’ve definitely got that motivation and then the rest of it is about trying to give audiences a fresh experience that doesn’t feel like you're just trying to check off some checklist of beats that you’re expecting and make something that feels new and exciting for people, but at the same time honoring what was so great about that character.

Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKE BACK, THE FORCE AWAKENS) and his son, Jon Kasdan, are scripting the film which will focus on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley. Finding the right actor to play Han Solo will be key as most of us are hard-pressed to imagine anyone other than Harrison Ford in the role.

Han Solo isn't the only iconic character the pair is working on, they're also developing an animated Spider-Man film for Sony. IGN tried to get Miller to spill some beans on that film as well but all the director was able to reveal was that it would not be another origin story and that it would be "something totally unique and different and not like anything you’ve seen." The animated Spider-Man film is set for a July 20, 2018 release, which comes just a couple of months after the May 25, 2018 release of the Han Solo-centric Star Wars Anthology film. Chris Miller and Phil Lord definitely have their work cut out for them.

I think that any movie that requires recasting Han Solo is a movie that should not be made. If they insist on making this, I think they should cast Harrison Ford and digitally de-age him. But this should only be attempted if they can make it look a hell of a lot better than the digital de-aging they did for Tron: Legacy and the last two Terminators. Barring that, they should scrap this and do a Yoda kung fu-style anthology movie instead.

Honoring what was so great about the character?

The reason the character was so great is simple; he was portrayed by Harrison Ford! This movie lives or dies upon casting. Ingruber looks the part, but does he have the charisma and the every-man machismo to pull it off. It may be better to get someone like Garrett Hedlund or Nicholas Hoult.

Anthony Ingruber

I really hope they are looking in this guy's direction because I feel he would not only look the part but I think he would be able to sell the attitude of a younger inexperienced Han Solo.

I have to admit. I liked his youtube video. He can do the facial expressions as well and he is only 25. He could work.

It's not a bad idea. But doing impressions is one thing, acting is another.

Can he act?

@Moat Man i guess you'll just have to watch Age of Adaline. it's Anthony Ingruber's first major film role, and he plays a younger version of Harrison Ford's character. apparently the director of the movie found him on youtube and cast him for the part. however i don't know how much screen time he actually gets and whether or not you can judge how well he can do a full feature as Han Solo. but he's in the trailer! and after watching that trailer, i can pretty much say i have no desire to watch

Between Lord & Miller, plus the two Kasdans

Disney probably has the best possible team in place to make this movie a success. Hopefully Disney is smart enough to stay out of their way.

There is so much to discover and explore in the Star Wars Universe why ruin one of the best characters by making a crappy movie casting a different actor. The only time this has worked is with Obi-Wan and that's because Guiness was already so old. We saw Han in his prime, so casting a completely different actor to play him 10 years younger is stupid.

This film is going to live or die by whoever they cast in the lead. Ford IS Han Solo and therefore (in my opinion) this film is unnecessary.

Until they cast one of your fanboy crushes, then you'll be loving the take of this iconic character and their tour de force performance.
