Chris Nolan considers five directors for the Superman reboot, plus an update on Batman 3

09.24.2010

Some interesting news coming out of the Chris Nolan Superhero Camp today...

First, SUPERMAN - Deadline's Mike Fleming is reporting that Nolan will be meeting with a short list of potential directors for the Man of Steel reboot. Those directors are Tony Scott (MAN ON FIRE), Matt Reeves (LET ME IN), Jonathan Liebesman (BATTLE: LOS ANGELES), Duncan Jones (MOON), and Zack Snyder (WATCHMEN). Nolan is expected to submit his choice to Warner Bros. within the next few weeks.

These are intriguing choices for varying reasons. Personally, I'm all for Duncan Jones (currently at work on the sci-fi film SOURCE CODE), but it's interesting to note that while most websites I've now read seem to be most down on Tony Scott's inclusion as a potential, Nolan himself has cited the man as being one of his biggest directorial influences (thanks to Collider's Ramses Flores for the report).

Fleming also states that WB is expected to make major announcements involving their DC characters in four weeks (a final director announcement for SUPERMAN being most likely among them).

And now, BATMAN 3 - The folks over at Nolan Fans have caught some video of the director in a press conference in Italy for the country's release of INCEPTION, and in it Nolan quickly updates us on the state of the much-anticipated Batsequel, saying that brother Jonathan has now completed his draft and that he himself has now taken over writing duties:

"I don't like to talk too much about things until I'm further along with them. But I'm working on the script right now. My brother Jonah has done a draft for the script and now I'm writing on it. We have set a release date and as far as the film being officially greenlit, they haven't told they don't want to do it. So I'm hopeful."

You can watch the entire press conference below, which features Nolan answering all sorts of questions in regards to INCEPTION, including its making, its expectations, and its success.

Give it to Jones

Three of those guys made a name for themselves giving an old genre a cool new spin, Reeves (Giant monsters), Jones (Sci Fi) and Snyder (Zombies). Out of them I think only Jones provides more than just original visuals but also gives stories a spin in regards to storytelling and themes. Much closer to Nolan's style, my choice my far.
And nepotism aside David Bowie could be a bold choice for Lex Luthor.

The others are fine, but not......

but not Zack Snyder!!!.....The movie would have a lot of slow motion action scenes, it's damn annoying, and it would be very hard for Zack Snyder to not have nudity in the film.......

Definately..

Snyder. I thought Superman Returns was great but it lacked the most important part of the story, Superman! Plus, if Supes was given a real enemy to match his strength, Snyder could do wonders with those action scenes

Look, we can all agree that Snyder can do an awesome true to it's roots action scene with great visuals. You add that with Nolan's ability to tell a good story and you get the epic that Superman Returns should of been. I still think Routh should return tho, he did great. It was that horrible storyline that fucked it all up.

Zack Snyder...

I just wet my pants. That man has talent oozing out his eyeballs. I would love Zack to take Supes; after Watchmen, the man proved he knows how to take a film seriously and really be true to content.

That being said, they are all superb choices, none of which would be a bad pick.

Id still love to see Brandon Routh don the cape again, he was brilliant. That being said they need to go balls to the wall with Supes, actually give him a villian that can beat his ass i.e. Darkseid, Doomsday or Zod. I think it would be nice for a Supes flick without Luthor for once. But Doomsday or Darkseid are what id like to see.

I'd love to see Bay be able to unleash Supes on Darkseids army. Del Toro would give us an awesome Darkseid world. Mel Gibson would be an interesting choice.

The only director who sounds good to me off that list for the Supes film is Duncan Jones. I like Snyder and Scott, but I think they're style wouldn't really suit the world of Superman, which I feel is too clean for their style. Maybe something darker, but Superman has never seemed dark to me, it's too glossy. As for Batman 3, Nolan makes me laugh. He's always so modest. He acts like it's not gonna happen, when we all know it will. I find it hard to believe that he will live up to TDK or even

Here's the thing. The last movie had a good director and a dogshit story line so I'll wait and see what kinds of story they have before I know who I think would best direct the story. I just hope they don't have a 50 something Luther vs a 20 something Supes. Actually I would love to see Lex in the background and Brainiac for the main action villain.

I think Reeves and Jones are good choices, and they are new enough to be able to grow under Nolan's supervision. I like Snyder, but I'm not sure I'd pick him for Superman. The other 2 are meh. That said, I'm still sad I'll never see a sequel to Superman Returns. I think a sequel had the potential to be the huge sucessful following Dark Knight was to Batman Begins.

Yeah, I was looking forward to a sequel to SR too. still feel that the film was ready to be skewered upon it's arrival by singer haters, homophobes and those that didn't care for his take on Xmen. SR was flawed(like many other great superhero films), still damn good, plus the sequel would have had a much faster pace and would've been great! Especially if Richard or the kid died in it.

i wouldnt mind duncan jones, although i havent seen Moon.. it sounds like he has some upcoming potential...

although snyder and to some extent reeves may seem like the safe bets

hopefully not Tony Scott. he can churn out a decent film but I dont think he can pull off Superman... this would be a passion pick for nolan

If he got it, I would be able to sit back and relax, knowing that he will make a visually awesome, loyal to its comic books roots, action packed superhero movie.

Please not Tony Scott

I'm betting for Duncan Jones and maybe Zack Snyder. Jones is the most logical choice but Moon is his only screen credit. Its very hard for someone to come from making a great film that got loads of critical acclaim to making a new version of the one of the biggest franchises in American media. Snyder might pull it off because he has credibility. Also, since he is recognized as a profitable director. Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen were all profitable and now he's got the studios on his side.

Also, having both their names on a poster would be instant box office cash in, so its likely that the studios would appreciate that kind of buzz.

As much as I loved 'Moon', and like director Duncan Jones, I think Tony Scott is a better choice for a 200 million dollar superhero action movie. Scott is the most seasoned director, and I think I'd trust Warner Brothers money the most with him. I also wouldn't mind seeing Zack Synder direct 'Superman: The Man of Steel' too.

Zach Snyder

The only thing that was missing from Returns was Superman involved in some bad-ass insane action sequences (plane crash doesn't count); and we're all know that insane action is what Snyder's good at. With Nolan behind the entire script and production, and Snyder's take on action sequences, this movie is going to be epic.

Duncan Jones or Zack Snyder. Only seeing Moon by Jones, I think his style would provide a more thought provoking approach. Snyder would be able to bring Superman back to the masses I think. His style appeals more to the mainstream. I just don't know how he will do with a film that won't include gruesome violence. I guess we can find out with Legend of the Guardians (Which doesn't look to appealing to me me though.)

BS BS BS

I can't say it enough how obviously fake this list is. Seriously.

Jonathan Liebsman? Battle: LA isn't even a finished film yet. What else does he have on his resume... a bad Texas Chainsaw prequel? Does Nolan have some secret info on his talent that we don't have? Or is he just a name with buzz right now?

Matt Reeves? He's done Cloverfield and another unreleased film.

Tony Scott? Adequete director, but he would never be considered for Superman. His style is pretty established

Tony Scott? Adequete director, but he would never be considered for Superman. His style is pretty established at this point in his career, and it's all wrong for Superman.

Zach Snyder? He's big enough on his own that he wouldn't need to be working under Chris Nolan. And considering how long he has been working with Warner Brothers, there's no way that he hasn't been offered this property before now.

Duncan Jones is an inspired choice, and the only name that I could realistically see Nolan going after, but I doubt the studio will want to give him such a huge property given his lack of experience.

These are all the token "buzz" genre directors right now, and were probably floated to the press in order to generate some publicity. Only Duncan Jones actually seems to be cut from the same cloth as Nolan.

+1 for Snyder

I'll love this guy forever since watching 300 but I think with Nolan behind him he could do something special. His films are visually stunning to me and something I enjoy getting a little lost in but we all know Supes needs something special for this turn at the big screen. He needs a good dose of action. Lets take the crashing plane from Returns and add 3 more scenes like it in the new film, then we're talkin! Returns died after that scene.

Due to the fact that he followed source material very closely as seen on Watchmen (beside Giant squid debate). Not to mention this guy can do an action.

I think it would be cool if John McTerian was given a shot, the guy directed some of the most memorable action scenes in the past 20 years; but out of the current five would love to see Tony Scott's version; Snyder is a WB butt-boy/yes-man; ie Joel Schumacher re-incarnated.

Whether or not you enjoyed the dawn remake, 300 or watchmen you know the man can film an action scene better than most directors these days (even Nolan himself). Snyder would absolutely fucking kill it if he was handed a well scripted supes movie.

Zack Snyder!!!!

Christopher Nolan + Zack Snyder = Awesome! Snyder won't be too scared to embrace the epic fantasy/sci-fi elements of Superman, and Nolan will be there to keep him grounded. It's the perfect push/pull combination. I personally think that this is a match made in heaven.

Snyder is a fantastic director who would certainly go out of his way to remain as true to the source material as possible. Sure Snyder can go over the top at times, but that's what Nolan is there for.

None of the above

Come on, Warner Brothers. Give Jonah Nolan a chance! I want to see if he has some of the directing talent his brother displays.

Matt Reeves or Duncan Jones

I don't like the idea of Scott or Liebesman, and sure Snyder knows visuals, but I would feel more comfortable with someone who can focus on the emotions of the characters.

So there's gonna be a Superman reboot nr. 2? To me the character is way too cheesy to ever "work" on the big screen. The signature costume may look cool in the comic books, but in the movie it's just a guy who wears super-tight red undies over stretch pants. It's camp, no matter what.

BATMAN 3 CAN'T COME SOON ENOUGH.

here are my feelings on each (ranked in order of preference)

1. Duncon Jones
i know one film isn't enough to judge a filmmaker on, especially concerning the possibility of taking over such a property, but i've heard great things about Source Code. As a writer/director, Duncon knows character, and more importantly he knows the importance of character- How often are sci-fi films character driven? As a writer/director, Duncon knows character, and more importantly he knows the importance of character- How often are sci-fi films character driven? Besides this, we obviously know WB wants to keep the new Supes on the cheap side (having spent a shitload on Returns). Moon was monstrously cheap, under 10 mill. And the special effects and production looks to be that of at least four times that. Add to that is the prospect of his collaborating composer Clint Mansell doing an all new score for Superman, it seems like heaven.

2. Matt Reeves
To be honest i'm not crazy about the rest of the potential directors, but out of the rest of them, at least Matt Reeves seems to know how to make a competent picture. My concern is that he often doesn't align himself with original material. I'd much rather someone whose previously work if very original, thus offering an original outlook to Superman (much like Nolan's history before Batman). Though, he seems like a safe bet.

3. Jonathan Liebesman
the lesser horrifying choice between the remaining three. if only because i haven't seen any of his films. Still, i hear his new alien film is mediocre, and doing Clash of the Titans 2 doesn't assure confidence that the dude is crazier about material than he is a paycheck.

4. Tony Scott
I'd hate for Tony Scott to do a Superman movie. Period. His sensibilities are not that of a the man of steel. It will either turn out terrible, mediocre (most likely).

5. Zach Snyder
For the love of Christ keep him away. He is a property whore. He has no sense of performance, character or drama, has no sense of anything cinematic outside of the surfaces (trailers and title sequences). I honestly hate his as a filmmaker. hate. I'm fearful as I know he has a deal going on with WB, though if Nolan has any say in the matter of director (im sure he does), than i can only assume the meeting is one of those 'meet and greet' things that WB forced him to do, and that he'll just

I´d be happy with the son of "the duke" taking helm. But Nolan, please, keep the guy from the slow-mo talking owls far from supes...

Snyder would be TOO epic. But Duncan Jones would rock that shit, especially with Clint Mansell doing his take on the classic Superman score. Come on!

Zack Snyder is a no-brainer on this one. I might pick Duncan for someone like Martian Manhunter but not for Supes.

Scott = 2nd teir

Scott is easily the most dissmissable. He has a solid track record of 2nd tier movies. The movies that make money because they have "top HOLLYWOOD name talent" but for the most part are forgettable films. Example: Scene with Superman faced with kryptonite. 3-4 sec inercut out of focus flashbacks with sup's dad echoing voice and audio to remind audience Kryptonite = bad for Superman.

Duncan Jones.

Why? He's much more a traditional director (like Nolan).

Synder relies on too much CGI at the expense of the characters and the story, and we already got that from Singer.
Tony Scott relies too much on shaky-cam for action sequences, plus he likes to experiment with film styles, again at the expense of the story (see Domino for reference).
Matt Reeves loves the handheld so much that it makes a movie unwatchable.
Jonathan Liebesman is more at home in the horror genre, and frankly should

Snyder would be my choice, but he's said before that it isn't something he's interested in so I'm surprised to see his name thrown in here. If not Snyder, I'd give it to Reeves or Jones. I didn't think Moon was the sci-fi masterpiece people have hyped it to be, but Jones seems capable.

Oh please Rao please...

...let it be Duncan Jones. Based on the greatness of Moon I really think he could deliver something special. If he was the one I would feel as ecstatic as I did when I first heard Nolan was going to do Batman back in '03.

And like a friend of mine said, Bowie is his dad. Imagine Bowie as Brainiac.
