Chris Pratt is Starlord in Guardians of the Galaxy

Feb. 5, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Ladies and gentleman, your Peter Quill has been chosen. Chris Pratt, best known as Andy on PARKS & RECREATION as well as turns in ZERO DARK THIRTY, MONEYBALL, and MOVIE 43, will play Starlord in Marvel's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

Deadline reports that Pratt landed the lead after a drawn out search that included John Krasinski, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, and pretty much every other actor in Hollywood.

Last time we need to give you this background synopsis: Better known as Star-Lord, Quill is the son of a human mother and alien father. A charming troublemaker who serves as an interplanetary policeman, Quill leads a rag-tag group of superheroes (Drax the Destroyer, a raccoon named Rocket and a sword-wielding woman named Gamora) in an effort to protect the solar system from an evil alien race.

Pratt has excellent comic timing and certainly is capable of bulking up as he did for ZERO DARK THIRTY. He can definitely hold his own with the quick timing that will be needed for a superhero movie, but it remains to be seen if he will have the starpower to make GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY a success.

Now that the lead has been selected, I have a feeling the supporting roles will fall into place rather quickly. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is slated to open on August 1, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Anyone dislike this casting choice?

Hmm.....

I don't really know what to think about this just yet. I know Pratt has a decent reputation and being a really funny dude, but I'm scratching my head at the casting decision. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, and... Chris Pratt? I mean, before Thor, we could say that Chris Hemsworth wasn't really known to all of us and he made a name for himself, but the rest of the cast were pretty well known before any of the

I can't really judge Pratt on his acting skills because I haven't really followed his career. I know he got in-shape Zero Dark Thirty, but I have no current intention of watching that movie so I don't know if he had a big part or anything. I don't watch Parks and Rec, but I hear he is hilarious on the show, and he had a small role in Moneyball that was pretty good. I'm worried about him taking the lead role to the beginning of a new story that Marvel is going to unveil on everyone not already familiar with it. I don't want this to turn into Marvel's version of Green Lantern. I've said it before, Marvel has done a great job so far with their casting choices, I really hope this works. Who knows...maybe Pratt hits it out of the park...maybe he will prove me and many others wrong.

now im expecting jim carey or adam sandler as Rocket Raccoon

remember that rumor? since they're going with a "lesser-known" actor in the lead, i bet they're gonna shoot for the big name actor as the voice of rocket raccoon. i assume the cost of and A-list star is expensive, but just their voice may be within budget.

and who's gonna be the villain again?

Best news I have heard in a long time

CP will be amazing, I know a lot of people think of him as an idiot character, but he has perfect timing and will be a welcomed piece to a larger chess set.

As a fan of the comic book, I think this casting is phenomenal. Guardians of the Galaxy needs an actor who can play the relateable human role but also display a sense of wonder, Chris Pratt can do all of those things.

My favorite part about this is that nobody is too familiar with the Guardians so I don't hafta listen to the "experts".

Chris Pratt is awesome, can't wait to see what he does with it. Hopefully akin to what Rainn Wilson did with a relatively serious role in Gunn's Super.

Looks lean to me, not jacked at all. Little to no peck or bi development, or forearms, shoulders seem naturally broad, no delt separation what so ever. He has abs not because he is jacked, but because he has low body fat.

Pratt did not get jacked for ZD30, he lost body fat, but that is not "jacked."

Hemsworth got jacked for Thor.

Jackman got jacked for Wolverine.

Dwayne Johnson stays JACKED year round.

What's funny is that this is the first time we are hearing his name associated with this film. We heard everyone else's names over and over with every article but not his. And now he has the part. Sort of like how Chris Evans was suddenly casted as Captain America, but was never one of the names involved on a consistent basis then say Garret Hedlund was or John Krasinski. I had a feeling that they would pull this sort of shock and surprise again.

So star lord?

Love Pratt but I no nothing of the character. I'm assuming he's more akin to a Deadpool than say a batman (I know I'm mixing), I mean is Chris' goofy humor and comedic timing good here?

Please stop calling him "jacked"

He has never been jacked. He was not jacked for Zero Dark Thirty, he just lost some weight thats it. Please stop referring to him as "jacked," it really is offensive to the guys that do put the time in the gym for their physiques -- Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, Hemsworth, Evans, etc etc, not to mention the 80s guys.

As for the casting, he was the best thing in 5 Year Engagement other than the Elmo bit and seems very likeable and confident so this is good news if you as me.

Yeah, he put in the time, to lose weight, which is fine. Call him "in shape," but he's wasnt busting his ass squatting, dead lifting, etc, and eating 6000 calories a day to put on muscle, like say someone like Jackman does for the role of Wolverine, or Dwayne Johnson does every day of his life.

Cant believe all the dislikes I got, wtf.

I'm also so relieved Zachary Levi didn't get the role. He was the one actor they were considering that I truly did not want to have the role.

He's not a bad actor, it's just that he's already in Thor 2 and he just wouldn't be exciting to watch in a film like this.

Wow. This is very random and out of left field casting. I think he will do a good job, but I was really hoping to see Michael Rosenbaum or John Krasinski get the role.

Pratt has been great on Parks and Recreation, and was one of the best parts about Five Year Engagment, Moneyball, and Zero Dark Thirty. I think it keeps the tradition of inspired casting by Marvel and they haven't made a wrong choice yet. This should be no different. I am very much looking forward to seeing this film with

Great Choice

I used to be a bonafide Pratt hater, but after I started watching Parks and Rec, then with his solid turn in ZD30, I am an unabashed fan. This is more great and inspired casting from Marvel. Pratt has got the charisma and humor to lead a team with a talking tree and raccoon, no doubt, and as proven by his physical transformation for ZD30, he's got the presence as well. Excellent.

I only know Pratt from ZD30 and he was good in that, so my feelings about the casting are mild positive.

I'm still surprised by Marvel's thinking though: they put an mostly unknown actor at the lead of their least mainstream franchise, and one that could, because of the space setting, be very costly. This is by far their franchise that is the least likely to succeed.

I like Pratt and think he'll do well in this role, but I do have a feeling Michael Rosenbaum would have gotten the part if Pratt wasn't in Zero Dark Thirty. Rosenbaum and director James Gunn are good friends, he was quite open about the fact that he tested for the part, and he and Pratt are equally good actors. But Pratt is in a huge Oscar-darling movie and Rosenbaum is not, so that sealed the deal. Gunn likely pushed for Michael's casting, but Disney/Marvel overruled him. Total speculation on

Nothing against the guy though, I have faith in Marvel's choice. My personal preference would be Michael Rosenbaum, but oh well. Hope he'll get a similar big role on a comicbook movie soon.
