Christian Bale comments on batkid and shares his advice to Ben Affleck as Batman

Nov. 18, 2013by:

Last week, the city of San Francisco and Make-A-Wish Foundation teamed up to bring a young boy's dream of being Batman for a day to life. Earning him the nickname of "batkid," young Miles Scott, who is battling Leukemia, took to the city in a crime-fighting adventure that garnered more than 12,000 volunteers around the city and proved that humanity can be a beautiful thing and that grown men can cry (not that I did, but this guy I know did...sniffle). Someone who knows Batman quite well is Christian Bale, star of The DARK KNIGHT Trilogy and all around ambassador of good will (unless you're adjusting lights on set).

Bale has shown his heart numerous times while wearing the mantle of the bat, from visiting victims of the Aurora shooting to calling kids suffering from Leukemia on the phone and the actor weighed in on the recent "batkid" event and then went on to offer his advice and support to the new Batman, Ben Affleck.

On "batkid":

"I just think it's great. It's a great day for the little guy. I just think Make-A-Wish and San Francisco did such an amazing thing to organize that. You just think of the delight in that little fella's heart, running around doing that. Then also as someone who has played Batman, it's great to see that the symbol of Batman is so much bigger than any one person, than any film, than any comic book, any TV series, that's really what it's all about. It's irrelevant which actor is playing it, we're irrelevant in that sense. But for little Miles to have such a great day is just delightful."

On Affleck taking on the role of Batman:

"I wish him all the best. He's a very experienced actor and filmmaker and he'll make it his own. Our thing's finished, we've always declared it was finished and it should be passed on to another actor and it will be again after him."

His advice to Affleck as the new Dark Knight:

"The only thing I said to him is just make sure he can take a piss without anyone having to help him. Because it's a little bit humiliating, at least what I went through, when you have to have someone help you out of the costume. That was my main piece of advice for him."

I think Bale has been distancing himself from the whole Batman thing for a while now and he seems ready to move on, yet still very proud of the work he's done (as he should be, in my opinion). It's great that he sees the big picture of the character and is able to acknowledge his place in the timeline of Batman's existence on film, but without retaining a lifelong ownership of the character.

Bale will next be seen in OUT OF THE FURNACE, which opens wide on December 6, 2013. BATMAN VS SUPERMAN opens on July 17, 2015.

I rewatched The Town the other night. Im fully convinced that if you think Affleck won't do a fine job as Bats, then you're a fucking idiot. Sure, some will reference Daredevil, but there was more than just one guy's performance wrong with that movie.

Im pumped to see Bats and Supes on the big screen for the first time, and you won't hear any bitching and whining from me until I see the finished product. And even then, I think it would have to be a humungous disaster for me to be fully

Affleck is going to be an amazing Batman. After seeing his acting chops in The Town and The Company Men, I know he can be pull off a very good Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Bale: Uh oh! I gotta take a batpiss!

Nolan: This is the third time this hour! Somebody take Christian to his trailer and give him a hand.

Bale: No, it's got to be you, Chris.

(While assisting Christian in the trailer)

Bale: Look me in the eye when you shake it.

Nolan: I swear to G-

Christian Bale is one of the best actors working today and was the best Batman that we have seen so far (my personal favorite will always be Keaton though).

Glad to read that he gave good advice to Affleck about carrying on the Bat torch and gives him his blessing and actually speaks positive about him being Batman, unlike 90% of the users on this website who just complain about the casting without even seeing ONE SINGLE amount of footage of Affleck in Bruce Wayne and/or Batman mode.

We can all complain that Affleck is portraying Batman, but I would be more worried on what Snyder and Goyer has cooked up in the sequel.

And I can't wait to see Bale own in Out of the Furnace and American Hustle. Definite multiple Oscar nominations coming for both films.

Definite? I know it's not likely, but what if they're awful movies...

That's always a possibility with any film, but the talent in both films is just too damn amazing.

This reminds me of what Val Kilmer said about the Batsuit: "You turn into an old man. You need help getting dressed. It takes about 45 minutes to get undressed. You need help going to the bathroom. You cant hear anymore ... And then when you call out for help, no one comes.

I'm not a good enough critique of all things movie/tv related to be able to say a certain person can't take on a role - whilst Daredevil wasn't very good, I thought Affleck made for a fine Murdock. However, I also wasn't an expert in Daredevil, outside of his various guest spots in Spider-Man comics, cartoon and the Trial of the Incredible Hulk (lolzzzzz) so it would be fair to say that I might not know what I am talking about. I thought Henry Cavill made for a damn humble Superman in the epic third trailer...only to be somewhat disappointed by him when I saw the movie. Ultimately, only time will tell. That all said it'll take some effort to dislodge Bale as the best live action Batman/Bruce Wayne there's been. I notice some giving Keaton that accolade, and whilst he made for a very fine Batman, he played Bruce Wayne the same way and so loses points for that. Alas (and however), he never had Conroy as inspiration, so he'd have a solid defence in place.

Baffleck

How can he do a fine job without removing his face? its not his acting im worried about....(although I am worried about his acting too) the choice of Ben Affleck is just wrong because of his face...it looks like a banana, kind of like Jay Leno....and he has almost no neck.......They will have to make the mask a certain way to hide part of his chin and face. Or he should have a beard as Batman...otherwise his face will look as dumb as it did in the DareDevil mask....look at the pictures of him

Im sure they can make a really good Movie and good to watch and really exciting.... But nobody wants just a good movie...thats not what its about....he will be stuck playing Batman for more movies and Justice League...thats the real Problem.....

You have yet to even see a clip, much less an entire movie of Affleck as Batman but you're ready to make bold accusations. Sounds SMRT.

Oh don't be a negative nancy, it was a feel good story that we need to hear sometimes. Although it is awful what happened in the Phillipines I hope there will be some organizations working to start a fund to help those poor people out.

don't mean to be negative but let's mull over the expense of this 'Batkid' stunt - the resources alone could've been utilized in ways to help other's in much grimmer situations. One kid who's self-awareness isn't even developed yet prioritized over millions of other's suffering. Hallmarks of American self-importance. Sure this story is heartwarming but it's saccharine news fodder at the end of the day...
