Christian Bale's Batman audition and Christopher Nolan's pitch to Warner Bros. for Batman Begins

09.23.2013by:

Do you remember when Christopher Nolan was first announced as the director for a new Batman movie? How about when Christian Bale was cast as Batman/Bruce Wayne? At the time, I couldn't have been a happier movie nerd. Nolan's MEMENTO was what essentially turned me into a movie geek and I loved Bale due to his performance in AMERICAN PSYCHO. THE DARK KNIGHT might get the most love and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is generally considered the weakest film in the trilogy, but it all started with BATMAN BEGINS.

The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector's Edition goes on sale tomorrow, and a couple of extras from it have made their way online that focus on the first film in the trilogy and the beginning of Christopher Nolan's vision for the vigilante. The first video is Christian Bale's screen test for Batman that also has some comments by Christopher Nolan and others, and it's interesting that they bring up Bale's Batman voice since it became such a touchy subject with fans in the sequels. The second video is about Christopher Nolan's pitch to Warner Bros. for a Batman origins movie. Both videos are pretty interesting, and for me anyway it brought me right back to how pumped I was when BATMAN BEGINS was first announced.

You can purchase The Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector's Edition through Amazon right here.

Extra Tidbit: I'm still slightly bummed Guy Pearce never made it into any of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.

I think it'd be cool if one day, Bruce Wayne woke up in Arkham Asylum, only to realize that he's been institutionalized there since childhood, following his parents' murders, and that all of the "bad guys" are pieces of his personality that broke off and developed their own identities within his own schizoid mind.

The suit

I actually like it on him. Haha. Other then that, I've said it before on here...I like the trilogy. Best Batman movies...but I could live without christian bale as bruce/bat. I didn't care for him at all really. I never seem to understand why people like him as Batman

people like him because he seems actually desperate to save Gotham, like he would do anything. In the end he does.

Always interesting to watch these sorts of early test scenes, especially in cases like this where Bale is still able to pull it off, despite this particular Batsuit looking ridiculous on him.

And I've always defended the voice; for all the bitching Bale had to endure about it, he had to do something, since he's got such a distinctive voice to begin with. In all likelihood, fanboys would have complained just as much if he didn't do anything to disguise it. Regardless, it was fine in Begins,

Regardless, it was fine in Begins, and he apparently did it the same way during the shooting of TDK, but Nolan fucked around with the voice in post-production to make it gritter, so blame him.

A retrospective documentary tribute, featuring interviews with the cast and crew about their memories of Ledger on set, would be really poignant and a great special feature for everyone who loved his portrayal to watch.

There will never be a comic trilogy as good as this, maybe even any trilogy. I loved all three movies but I'll always wonder what they had in mind for the third film if Heath hadn't died. They must've at least been spitballing some ideas.

You really think this is the best trilogy ever? Or no other trilogy is comparable? Give me a break.

Even though i enjoyed the first two films in the trilogy,i still wonder how the Darren aronofsky's Batman would have been like.he is the one who wanted to reboot Batman with Batman origin story.hope he directs the next reboot

Best comic book trilogy ever. I'm probably in the minority on this one but I never got bothered by Bale's Batman voice. Did it get progressively more silly with every movie? Sure, but it still made logical sense for Bruce not to have the same voice as Batman. Like others have said, no way I'm shelling out the money to buy this, although it looks pretty awesome. Besides, I already have the trilogy on blu-ray.

The trilogy was ruined by TDKR

I liked the first two well enough, but TDKR was HORRIBLE on so many levels that it left a bad taste in my mouth for the whole trilogy. [link]t=201

Seems like the set has amazing special features but I'm not paying 80 dollars for it. I'll wait until the price drops down to about 40 dollars over the next couple months leading into Christmas.

One of the reasons that make Nolan's Batman trilogy stands out is that he is able to make Batman's stories transpire in the actual world. Other Batman movies felt like they were shot on studio back lot but Nolan's Batman is just vast and wide in terms of scope. Besides, his Batman's stories for all three movies are compelling and ongoing and even make audiences root for Batman.

This is a cool bonus feature. I wish Bale had used his regular voice throughout the entire trilogy and not the one we got. He's just as intimidating with his regular voice. And it's one of the many reasons why Batman Begins is my favorite Batman film out of the entire trilogy.

And I would have loved to have seen something like this with Ledger portraying the Joker for the very first time.

Great look behind the curtain. I really enjoyed all three films and I think that even though there are some who decry the films as too dour or self-serious, the incarnation of Batman on the big screen directly preceding that was so over the top, bombastic and neon-drenched that it needed to be serious, it needed to be grounded and it needed to feel more real. Interesting to see Bale in the Batman Forever suit; this is a great tidbit and I am looking forward to getting a hold of this set.

Re extra tidbit: Pearce would have made an excellent Riddler.

Ben Affleck

I can't help to feel sad that we will not see Nolan's universe explored more. I think it's because a lot of people are used to Bale and most liked (loved?) his performance. It seems so soon to recast but it's happening and we have to deal with it. My problem with Affleck is not his ability as an actor but that they could have chosen so many other actors. Bale had a Manliness to him; Affleck, although he's not a wuss, doesn't look or sound like a Dark Knight Returns, older batman we were

I may be wrong and it's too early to judge. Just wanted to vent because I would have LOVED to see Bale continue his run as Batman/Bruce wayne and to see more villains in Nolan's world. Schmoes.....Be Gentle LMFAO

He succeeded

Because he wanted to tell a STORY!!! Something that most comic book films failed to do at the time. All those films had very basic stories of good vs evil. Batman Begins felt like a film that could stand on its own if Batman wasn't a comic icon. I always use this as as argument why this film is amazing, Bruce Wayne is the central piece of that film for 55 minutes. You don't see Batman for that long of time and the film is so damn engaging. That is the reason why Batman Begins is my

That is the reason why Batman Begins is my favorite of the trilogy and my personal pick for best film of 2005. God, I can still remember that feeling of complete satisfaction I had when I walked out of that film. Only 3-5 films have made me feel that way.
