Chronicle sequel hits a snag due to Fox's dislike of scribe Max Landis' script

Chronicle poster slice

I, like most people, was quite impressed with CHRONICLE. I can understand the frustration some of you felt when the "found footage" technique was abandoned in favor of capturing a particularly cool or beautiful shot, but my brain never really bothered to notice that kind of shift due to being so deeply engrossed in the story.  A subsequent viewing has revealed some of the more jarring filmmaking choices at hand, but they honestly didn't serve to distract me all that much from dialogue and character evolution that felt strongly defined and startlingly insightful.  These qualities can be seen most of all in the way CHRONICLE shows how a good villain often, unknowingly, crafts their own prison of victimization from within which to rage against the world.  It's a good point, and one I've not often seen explored.

But Fox's planned sequel to the superhero story may have hit a small snag - the studio doesn't really like the draft written by original CHRONICLE scribe Max Landis.  According to Max's father John Landis (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON): “He wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.’"

It's possible that the project may be shelved entirely if an agreement cannot be made - after all, a sequel was never officially announced.  Conversely, it may also be possible that Fox might just bring in a new writer to take a crack at recapturing the figurateive "lightning in a bottle" effect and success of the first film.  This seems to be the sort of sticking point that will make or break a sequel - what do you hope will happen, or do you not care much either way for a follow-up to CHRONICLE?

Chronicle still - car crushing

Extra Tidbit: I'd be curious to someday ask Landis why he chose to set the story in Seattle. Then again, maybe I just try to see metaphorical qualities in places where there are none.

TBH...

I would personally prefer it if they let Chronicle be. I loved the original; it works great as a standalone piece, and I doubt that any sequel would be as good as the first, even if it is being written by the guys who did the first. Look at what Hollywood is doing! They want "Chronicle" again in a sequel, and they just don't realize that that isn't going to fly. They are so out of touch, it makes me sick, and what they would approve would be sub par at best, and completely bad at the worst.

They really ought to have trusted the writers to make a decent plot instead of focusing only on what THEY want. Sorry if I sound bitter; I am still cleansing my palette of the horror that was Blair Witch 2, and that has just remained with me, I guess.

Hmm

I'd love to see the concepts of the first movie explored further, there are so many possibilities. Especially with the strong character development, though I feel the main character still has a lot of room to grow. I say the studio should stay out of it and let the man have his movie!

Sequel

I always wondered what the Government would do with Andrew's body. Matt leaves it there after the fight. I wonder if the government takes Andrews body and tries to learn what happened to them and if they can replicate it.
This sequel could go into how they got their powers, what happened to their brains, and could have governement sending super soldiers after Matt to contain the situation

This is one of my favorite found footage films

Because, at the end it didn't feel like another found footage movie, where the camera movements seemed to be so restrictive. It felt like an entertaining movie. I wish more films would do this, I as an audience member do not go for the gimmick oh this could be real. I know it's a movie, I like nice static shots, crane shots, dolly, I don't want a found footage movie full of shaky cam.

There are a number of great ways you could do a sequel to Chronicle - getting the original writer's take on things would be cool, but it's unrealistic to think that's the way it'll go down in Hollywood. I personally loved the original, but have only seen it the once in the cinema. It wasn't a million miles from how a live-action Akira could've played out, but without the baggage attempting something like that carries. I don't think anyone needs the first film again, but there's plenty of stuff

Maybe Andrew is alive?

I always wondered (though, most likely, not true) if Andrew was still alive. SPOILERS yes he had a big ass pole stuck through him, but, their powers kept developing and Andrew was quite strong. I dunno, I just thought maybe he had regen powers and he was still alive when the dude took off. But ehh...that's my own theory, whatever.

I liked the movie but I'm not interested in a sequel one bit, the movie said all it could.
