Civil War writers want to bring Namor & Marvel Zombies to the big screen

05.04.2016

Namor the Sub-Mariner Marvel Zombies Banner

THR recently caught up with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR screenwriters Steve McFeely and Chris Markus, and during their interview, the duo (who will be back to pen both of the AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR films) were asked which characters they'd like to see in a future Marvel movie. McFeely said he'd love to bring Namor the Sub-Mariner into the MCU, while Markus is all about Marvel Zombies.

McFeely on Namor:

Namor. He is kind of a jerk and has a chip on his shoulder and he is a king and lives underwater. The degree of difficulty is so high, though. Cause it could be a great movie or it could be truly terrible.

Markus on Marvel Zombies:

I think it would be cool to make a Marvel Zombies movie but that would require a whole other wing or, at least, another dimension.

Based on Kevin Feige's comments from a few years ago, I highly doubt a live-action Marvel Zombies flick will ever happen, however an animated movie based on the comics could work. As for Namor, it's believed that Marvel does have the film rights back to the sea-dweller, but apparently things are still complicated, and there's been no word on if the studio has any solid future movie plans for the character. Which do you think is more likely to happen: Namor joining the MCU or an adaptation of Marvel Zombies?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR hits theaters this Friday.

I'm all for Namor, but I hated the Zombie comics...though when the Invisible Woman popped the head of Zombieafied Mr. Fantastic, that was pretty...fantastic.

I guess one way to do Marvel Zombies in a movie would be to establish a What If? movie franchise, then you could tell all the weird stories that don't fit in with the mainstream MCU. I'd love to see that sort of thing, same goes with DC's Elseworlds stories, but making it happen would take a huge leap of faith on the part of the studios for something that might not pay off or work for a broader audience. And yeah getting Namor on board would be interesting if they've reached an agreement with

Don't see them getting Fox's properties back any time soon though, so there's still a ton of great stories you'd never be able to adapt properly.

I would love to see a Namor movie, but wouldn't Fox own the rights to him since he's a mutant?

Make namor now.
He is my favorite Marvel character. A lot of depth to him (no pun). I would love to see him get a movie.

When Agent Carter was first announced I was really hoping that we'd see Namor and the original Human Torch appear on the show. Sadly, I'm still waiting.

Even more than Namor though, I would absolutely love me a a Ka-Zar movie. Especially with the success of Jurassic World you'd think Marvel would want a piece of that dino action!

Why haven't we already seen a Namor movie? Or why have I never even heard it discussed before?

Also, just give us an animated Marvel Zombies. It was a neat idea but there's no reason to make a real movie out of it.

As they say it's to difficult and I think the general public won't get him. It will be like watchmen. The geeks will like it but general audience won't.

But how are they going to make a Marvel Zombies movie in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe? It doesn't make sense unless you use the gimmick of one of The Infinity Gauntlet's gem stone and set an alternate timeline where everybody has turned into a living dead.

Marvel Zombies took place in a different universe... Is the idea of an alternate universe too big to comprehend for you and the average viewer? I think not. Especially if the movie is rated R and they allow Deadpool to come over and visit. We could see Marvel Zombies through the eyes of DP. There are a ton of ways they could pull this off. You just need a few more brain cells to understand its not the same universe.

Marvel NEEDS to do Marvel Zombies WITH Deadpool

Deadpool 3 could be Marvel Zombies (bring DP over to the Marvel universe, similar to a Spidey deal). Just throw DP into the mix, give the movie an R rating (since we know DP can make billions) and we got ourselves an R rated Marvel Studios movie.

The chances of this happening are slim to none. Why would Fox make any deal with Marvel to allow them to use Deadpool when they had a huge hit on their hands this year? Sony's Spider-Man movies were in decline when they made the deal, so it made sense, but Fox has a huge money-maker on their hand: a superhero movie that can be made on a relatively small budget and make over 300 million domestically? That's a goldmine.

Besides that, Marvel will never make an R-rated movie. Disney would

Besides that, Marvel will never make an R-rated movie. Disney would never allow it. The only way we would get R-rated content produced by Marvel is through Netflix, which could be an option for a home to the Marvel Zombies series that no one mentioned. Deadpool is in good hands with Fox, because that's the only way an R-rated movie will be approved.

As you said, MZ is a NO go, unless they go the DC Animated Features' way and do a n R Rated animated film... Yeah, right, that would be SOOOO Disney ! So I guess it's NEVER going to happen;
About Namor, the situation, as far as I remember, is kind of like the HULK's one:
The rights are shared with Universal. If they do a solo movie, Universal has the distribution rights and a good part of the revenues, but if they do it in a 'group' film (Avengers) or supporting character in another MCU movie

If they do a solo movie, Universal has the distribution rights and a good part of the revenues, but if they do it in a 'group' film (Avengers) or supporting character in another MCU movie (like Hulk in the upcoming Thor:Ragnarok), they keep Disney keeps the all the money, or at least MOST of it !
That's the real reason behind the lack of Hulk solo movie or Sub-mariner film... Beside, as I'm still convinced that Marvel will get the FF's right back from Fox, in exchange for the rights for Fox to do X-TV-Shows, they might be waiting for a reboot of the franchise MCU way, to introduce him through the FF, instead of his own film (like a 'F... You Universal. Kindly, Disney' note). I could easily see the FF being created through a 'collateral damage' of the Infinity War events.
So, anyway, tricky but possible for Namor... Nu hu, for the MZU !
