Clash of the Titans sequel might be directed by Jonathan Liebesman... wait, who?

06.11.2010
That's Jonathan Liebesman there to the right of cinematic destructor Michael Bay, producer on Liebesman's pretty terrible TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING. Liebesman also did 2003's DARKNESS FALLS and last year's THE KILLING ROOM with Nick Cannon. Not the most glowing CV in the world I think, but okay.

So why in the world, according to the Los Angeles Times, is this guy supposedly at the top of the heap at Warner Bros. to direct the CLASH OF THE TITANS sequel?

That's a great question, and one that I'm going to leave to speculation. As you'll recall, a report back in April said that the CLASH sequel would be going into development immediately, though without director Louis Leterrier (the filmmaker decided not to return... possibly because of this?).

CLASH OF THE TITANS made enough money to justify a sequel - about $480 million worldwide, so it's no surprise that the executives at WB and Legendary Pictures want to move on this (though domestically it only pulled in a reported $162 million, which is sub-par no matter how you slice it). When you take into consideration that they're trying to lock down Sam Worthington as well before he ships off to Pandora to do Na'vi battle with James Cameron again, it starts maybe making sense why they'd go with a cheaper and perhaps more controllable director like Liebesman for a big-time studio tentpole. But again, that's just speculation on my part.

The LA Times also reveals that CLASH OF THE TITANS 2 will be shot in 3D, avoiding the post-conversion process that made the first film look like melted ass-butter. That's a plus, I guess.

You'll be hearing more of Liebesman soon, as the director is currently in post on the sci-fi actioner that sounds really cool on paper BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, starring Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, and Bridget Moynahan. The film is currently set for a March 11, 2011 release.
Extra Tidbit: Liebesman was once attached to direct the FRIDAY THE 13TH remake for Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company.
