Clip and Pics from Denzel and Reynolds actioner Safe House

01.28.2012by:

The Denzel Washington/Ryan Reynolds action thriller Safe House looks intriguing enough and today saw the release of a new clip and some stills that seem adequate enough. I want to talk this up and fawn all over it, but I just can't. I mean, it looks entertaining enough, but nothing about it will summon me to the theater to see it.

Here's the clip.

Safe House is the first U.S. film from Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa who seems to be channeling Tony Scott almost shot-for-shot in the trailer. I'm just not blown away by this, but I feel like I should be. Can't quite figure out what's missing.

Denzel is a proven talent many times over and Reynolds is great in comedic roles, but hasn't shined as much in his "heroic" roles. (DEADPOOL may be his only shot at a perfect hybrid of his action/comedy chops). I don't know about this one.

So, there's pictures of Ryan Reynolds running. With a gun. And then there's Brendan Gleeson. Hair slicked back. Wondering what the f*ck he's doing there. Sam Shepard thinks he's in SWORDFISH 2: HACKERS DELITE. Then, my sweet, sweet Vera Farmiga. I'm not sure if she has lines in the movie, but there she is. Lookin' all good.

So, the big question is...Are YOU going to see SAFE HOUSE on February 10th, 2012?

Extra Tidbit: Still Waiting 3, anyone?

Nice if not great

Safe House is a pretty solid action/Thriller. What it lacks in originality, it gets in intensity. Reynolds & Washington are both quite believable in the action scenes and the fights are rough : they're hit, they bleed; They go through a window, they're cut; they're hurt, it's painful and you can feel it... It tries to hard to be a Bourne-like for it's own good, sometimes, though!

I don't get why Ryan Reynolds get such a hard time for supposedly not being a credible action star. Ever since Blade III I find him a very credible action star. His Hannibal King was the best part of that movie. I'm looking forward to Safe House

Well, Reynolds was good in Blade 3, ┬┤cause he was kind of funny in this flic. Hovewer he┬┤s lacking intensity and grit and he looked akward and sloppy in the action scenes. There┬┤s a reason he was doubled in pretty much all fight scenes his character had in "Wolverine".

Anyone who tries to copy/imitate Tony Scott's A.D.D style, is committing career-suicide. Just Watch Behind Enemy Lines 2 or The Contractor for comparison.

I think Ryan Reynolds is under-estimated as an action-star maybe because he's a more laid-back kind of guy than gun-ho, but it still works for me thanks to his charisma :D
And anything with Denzel is totally worth watching (the box-office aside) especially if he's kicking-ass..OH, yeah!

The movie looks like a solid thriller. I enjoyed the trailer and have been enjoying all of the commercials.

I like the gritty look and feel to the film and think Denzel and Reynolds will BOTH knock it out of the park.

This film works for me. I do see the Tony Scott influence, and it seems to channel a bit of Unstoppable, with Denzel once again being paired with a younger guy and being in the mentorish role (cause you can be sure that he and Reynolds will be on the same team by the end of the film). I like Reynolds and think he makes a fine serious actor. He does seem to constantly channel that sarcastic, Mr. Cool in almost all of his roles, but when he has done a serious acting job, he has usually done okay

I also can see Reynolds and Washington having great chemistry here. The film doesn't come across as a must see, but it does seem like it will be enjoyable, as even the worst of Denzel's latest films are at the very least entertaining.

What┤s missing? A real counterpart for badass Denzel. Ryan┤s a cool guy but he┤s just too much of a babyfaced goofball to be taking seriously in these roles! Maybe the years will help making him a bit more manly and gritty for those parts (it worked for Ben Affleck).

That's my biggest problem with this. Not that I have a problem with Reynolds, but it's been a long time since I felt Washington had someone up to acting opposite him. I still think a real Denzel/Brendan Gleason match-up could be just the ticket. Yes, I came up with that after watching the trailer, but Brendan Gleason is one of the best actors working today.

He's supposed to be a rookie CIA agent looking for a chance to advance. His relative youth should work in his favour here.

Oh, and Smokin' Aces and Buried. Reynolds was great in both.

He was part of an nice ensemble in "Smoking Aces" but didn┬┤t really stood out. And he was ok in "Burried", maybe he was put out of him comfort zone being covered in dirt in that tight, barely lit location.

This movie's trying too hard to be a "smart, gritty, badass thriller". Way too hard. Reminds me of Law Abiding Citizen. Good story, great cast, fell flat on its ass for trying too hard to be smart.

Forget the pics and trailers. This is all you need to know:
Rated R for strong violence throughout and some language.
Support it or turn in your dick.

I'm gonna go ahead and hold onto my manhood, seeing as Conan the Barbarian was also rated R and it was a pile of shite.

That said, if Safe House could deliver, say, on a Verhoeven-esque level of violence, then maybe it'll be worth my time.

Either way, it's still going in the ol' NFQ.

Let me know how it is, Captain.

Yeah, but imagine how much MORE painful that film woulda been had it been PG-13.

Sometimes the R-rating is mild anesthetic.

Yeah well, it a lot of cases that also means "this movie is so stupid only apes would watch it". I love 'R' movies, but sometimes I'd like to keep my IQ intact . Because a dick's of no use if you're not sure what to do with it.
