... turn some HBO shows into movies!
by Sturdy

Ive always liked the idea of ending a great TV show with a feature length film. Shows like The X-Files, Buffy, and countless others would have made more of an impact had they gone out with a full blown theatrical movie rather than a whimper of an hour-long episode. However, that idea isnt more applicable anywhere than on HBO, where fantastic TV shows like Sex and the City, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Entourage and others are either ending, or have already ended.

I think Sex and the City is a good example of an HBO show that needed a movie. I know they had one planned and of course its impossible to get four women to agree on anything (sorry ladies, but you know its true). However, with rumors circulating that theyre revisiting the idea, I have to say I support it and that Carrie and friends would make a good translation to the big screen.

Quick, which one is Sarah Jessica Parker?

The Sopranos is one of my favorite shows of all time (isnt it everyones?) and it too is nearing the end. I could write all day about how fantastic the show is, but the one thing that would make it better is to put it on the big screen. Tony and the gang need a huge send off and a trip to the local cinema would do them good. I cant imagine it would be too difficult. Every episode feels like a mini-movie anyway, so it shouldnt be too much work to add in a story and some action and there you have it.

Reason 1 to have a Sopranos movie!

In a sense, Borat was a full-length feature film of Da Ali G Show and look how well that worked. I know it wasnt the same thing, but it was a character a lot of people liked and were familiar with and that had to have helped its success. There are plenty of other examples of HBO shows that would translate well in theaters. Id love to see Entourage on the big screen and Mark Wahlberg could add some star power to it. Deadwood would be another good example with plenty of fans following it to the big screen.

HBO has the motto that Its not TV, its HBO. Although a little corny, I have to agree that most TV shows on HBO are far superior to their network counterparts. I also feel comfortable asking for this because I know we wont have any of the same screw-ups that weve had with other TV to movie translations. I know a Sopranos film wouldnt be a joke as long as the same creative team was behind it and all the stars showed up for it. Ditto for all the other HBO shows. I dont want remakes of the shows, I want continuations. The fans are there for HBO, just look at the fact were willing to pay twice as much for the DVDs even though theres half as many episodes. Im sure there are others that would be willing to follow them to the big screen.

It can't be done

HBO shows are too long (you'll watch sometimes 3 without something truly intersting happening) but they captivate you regardless and later on you appreciate it as the future drama seems magnified and that much more captivating.

fyi: Deadwood is going out with 2 or 3 "movie-like" (2 hours?) shows.

The feeling, pace, and continuity would all be lost if a movie was made about any of these.

Buffy as a movie

I'm totally cool with your idea for making HBO shows into a movie. However, you mentioned Buffy would've ended better as a movie. Definitely agree with you there.

The first three of the season finales were 2 hour events and they're generally considered the best of the best. There was talk of a feature length or tv movie of Buffy (and it's spinoff Angel), but according to Joss, he could never come to an agreement for funding with the networks. So it never happened. Buffy is however being

Buffy is however being continued as a comic book written in part by Joss Whedon which is considered canon from the end of the tv show. So it's not whimpering out, or at least I don't think so anyway.

completley agree with this. I would love to go to the movies to see a film of one of my favorite tv shows, where there would be nobody in the theater who hadn't seen the show, it would be a movie strictcly for the fans, I'd love that.

Some shows I would still like to end on tv but I would still want a movie of a show that talks about the near end of the show.

Deadwood

I'm all for a Deadwood feature film. I was really upset when I heard it got canned. I thought it was one of their best shows.

Rotten Tomatoes

Lest it go unnoticed, I just wanted to say that I picked up on the "100 Unsexiest Women" reference concerning SJP.

Nice.

Deadwood is getting the feature length treatment. To tie up loose ends after the series' unexpected cancellation, two feature length TV movies will be produced.
Sure, it's not the big screen, but it still rocks.

Carnivale

This show was unfairly cut short, with so much story left to go. Although one film certainly wouldn't cover all the intended plot developments, it would definatly be a welcome send off for one of the best TV series of all time.

I agree completely. The Sopranos is my all time favorite show, it would be great to cap it off with a feature leangth bada bing. I think it really has to apply to Deadwood though, they are up with season three, and seing as though it was an enexpected move to cancel when they did, a nice 2- 2:30 hour long finale would rock.
