C'mon Hollywood #116

... I dont care if youre gay!
by Sturdy

With the recent press Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris have received from coming out of the closet, its made me realize two things. First, I dont care. Second, is this really news to anyone? I mean, how many people in the world are really surprised that those two turned out to be homosexuals? Its not like Lance and Neil were figures of masculinity. One sings like a girl and cant stop touching himself and the other is a super skinny child actor.

I think an actor admitting he or she is gay is like Mark Maguire admitting he used steroids. An actor admitting they're gay isn't exactly shocking news. Anyone whos ever been involved in any kind of acting class or stage production knows that straight people are in the minority. The point is that I dont really care if my favorite actor is gay or not, as long as they continue to make good films.

Honestly, is there anyone that wouldnt sleep with Johnny Depp?

However, it seems Hollywood and the media care a lot about the sexuality of people in the entertainment business. I say Hollywood because I find it very odd that no big name star has ever come out of the closet and when lesser performers do, it usually makes headlines. Thats where the press comes in. Doogies announcement made front-page news on cnn.com and I would hardly put that shocking development alongside world events. I understand it making the gossip columns, but why should an actors sexuality be national news?

I understand why big name stars would be hesitant to make their sexual preferences public. First off, its no ones business who they sleep with. Second, there could be obvious career consequences for whoever decides to become the first star to admit to being gay. If its a dramatic actor likesayJake Gyllenhaal, then I doubt hed feel the backlash as much as an action star likesayVin Diesel. I couldnt imagine him getting the role of the thug street racer if people looked at him as the gay actor. The fact remains, someone has to be the first one to do it so we can stop making this a big deal.

Not that theres anything wrong with that.

I know that a heterosexual, young, white male writing an article about equality and gay rights doesnt really carry much credibility, but its something that needs to be addressed. Im not saying we should picket the streets or form a gay pride parade, but I think were past the stage where actors should feel persecuted for publicly being gay. I think lifes too short to put unnecessary stipulations on who to love and who to be friends with. I know not everyone in the world feels the same way, but Hollywood can do a lot to influence those views.

CHARLES AND ERIC SITTING IN A TREE...

It would neither add nor detract from the X-Men movies to imagine that Professor X and Magneto had a fling at some point. Lance and Neil coming out don't bother me as much as Clay Aiken remaining silent. He can just say "Yes, I'm gay. So what?" or "No, I'm not gay and there's nothing wrong with that." By refusing to answer the question, he seems to be implying that there is something wrong. Mind you, I can understand him wanting his privacy. It should be "Am I gay? Yes. Next question."

If Johnny Depp needed a place to stay, we have a spare bed. I wouldn't want to sleep with him. That's not homophobia: he just doesn't have the right equipment.

WRONG!!!

I am an actor who has done work for both stage and screen, and your comment about straight people being the minority in those settings is a very typical, very frustrating, and simply very wrong stereotype. Straight people ARE NOT in the minority in acting circles.

The problem is, most people think that homosexuals are a larger minority than they actually are. Do your research and you will find that homosexuals are perhaps the smallest major minority in this country (I am referring to the

Lance and Neil

"One sings like a girl and cant stop touching himself and the other is a super skinny child actor." To cover our bases, it should be said that Neil Patrick Harris also sings like a girl. He was on Broadway doing just that before he became Barney.

RiverStyx hit it right. Who the fuck cares what a grown adult does in the privacy in their personal life? What they do off screen has no bearing on how they should be perceived onscreen. There are far more important things that should be worried about, rather than the personal lives of overpaid shallow celebrities. Get a sense of perspective, please.

Hmmm...

I agree with this article...but I don't care about actor's/actress' personal lives IN THE LEAST. Whatever their sexual orientation is, whatever they wear every day, whatever they eat for breakfast in the morning - I JUST DONT CARE!!! As long as they act good in a movie, that's ALL THAT MATTERS!!

Why do some people look into this crap so much? Why is gossip and fashion so important to some people?

I don't care.

I don't care if an actor is gay. I don't care if two actors are dating. I don't care if an actor is pregnant/in rehab/has an eating disorder/gets married/etc. Gossip like that is for people who have no lives. I only care about what movie they're going to be in and whether or not they actually contribute to how good or bad the movie is. I'll never understand why people give a shit about what goes on in celebrity personal lives. I remember seeing Brad and Angelina take a boat ride with

Why is this news? Who cares?

I like rainbows

Hell it shouldn't really matter and in some cases it appears as though it doesn't. I mean look at Sir Ian McKellan, he has landed two iconic rolls with Gandolf and Magneto... two characters that many fans wouldn't want to have comming off as a bit "funny" (although I have my doubts with Magneto... seems as though him and Professor X could have a little thing going). And there have been no complaints or out cries with those casting choices or perfomances (not that I know of anyway).

Also even though I know what you were aiming for (pointing out that both appear to be obvious) you probably shouldn't compare admitting to being gay in Hollywood and admitting you use steroids in professional baseball. Makes it seem like you think the homosexuals need to fess up about doing something wrong.

good write-up

Well, I think the article has more credibility now, cause its written by a young, white, straight guy than say, if it was written by a gay person. Why? because it shows that you don't have to be gay to understand this issue(or non-issue as you put it). I cant wait till the day where people finally grow up and pay attention to real issues, not who's sleeping with who.

True....

I agree with what you are saying Logan (see my original comment) but I'm pretty sure that most of the irking is because of the way it is played up in the media. Actors coming out of the closet is one thing, actors being suddenly treated differently by the media is something else.

I think you are right about what you are saying, though.

I do agree with some of the comments -- but you know what? I'm glad that when people come out of the closet, it's publicized. It's still a pain-in-the-ass world for some kids having to deal with being gay or not -- and if people they admire and respect (ok, not necessarily these two, but you know what I mean), SUCCESSFUL people they admire and respect, come out and say "I'm gay, and I'm dealing with the same shit as you, and it's all right", then it's a good thing.

I wouldn't sleep with Johnny Depp. I think he's gross. Most of the time he looks like a needs a shower.

Apparently it isn't believable if a gay actor portrays a straight person in a movie. So does that mean that Anthony Hopkins really had to eat human flesh to be believable as Hannibal the Cannibal in Silense of the Lambs?

COME OUT TOM CRUISE

Meh. It gets reported as much as other celeb news, and works to convince others that there is nothing wrong with coming out to Modern America.

Right on....

Not that I don't care about these people's love, or that I don't appreciate how it might encourage tolerance in more narrowminded people, but I agree that it's somewhat patronizing in the way it's portrayed. Saying that Mr. X slept with Mr. Y - okay, I don't care what people do in the bedroom, but fine. However, most of the time the media divulges into a "LOL GAY HAHA!"-type response. Grow up already. It was a big shock when Rock Hudson was outed - okay, I give you that. Alright, that was like
