C'mon Hollywood #118

... Oscar Schmoscar 07
by Sturdy

Last year I was pretty upset at the results of the Academy Awards. I felt strongly that CRASH was an overrated film and didnt deserve the hype it received. This year, however, I was very pleased with all of the winners and I feel the Academy finally got it right. In fact, this is the first year in many years that I feel that way. I absolutely loved THE DEPARTED and its nice that Marty finally got the award hes deserved so many times before. Also, for the first time since RETURN OF THE KING, the best picture Oscar winner was also the best picture Golden Schmoe winner!

Ive read some negative feedback on this site and others about the hosting job of Ellen Degeneres. She wasnt as great as Steve Martin was a few years ago, but personally, I thought she was pretty damn good. She was funny, very comfortable and did a great job of keeping things going. It wasnt her fault the show ran too long. Granted her musical thing in the beginning was pretty lame, but at least it wasnt Billy Crystal. Zing!

Classiest woman on the red carpet.

But this isnt all rainbows and butterflies. The Academy still has some serious work to do. At just over four hours, the show is waaaayyyyy too long. Im glad they finally sped up the Academy presidents speech, but they still need to get rid of the montages. I can understand one in the beginning to get things going and then one to honor those that passed away, but thats it. We dont need one to celebrate the history of America in film. Also, theres no need to have the best song performances. Its a complete waste of time and unless its a musical, most of them arent used in the film until the credits roll. Its a celebration of FILM, not MUSIC. Save the performances for the Grammys. Throughout the show, I can easily pick things that I thought were lame (Eastwood translating for Ennio Morricone) but Ill let those slide since there were other things that I liked (Jerry Seinfeld).

Ok, this was funny too.

Id also like to pause for a second and rant about the short film categories. If you havent already, I highly recommend next year you find a city near you thats playing all of the short film nominations and go watch them. I did that this year because I wanted to impress my friends. Aside from being called a geek, I also discovered that picking the best short film is like picking which fork to cut your eye out with. I dont want to offend people that make short films, but wow were they bad. Not only that, but the winners were by far and away the worst of the films. This leads me to believe that a) none of the Academy members saw the films and b) no one cares. Therefore, I recommend nixing these three categories altogether and give them their own award ceremony. The Academy can probably trick whatever young, popular actress hosted the tech awards into hosting the short film awards. Then we can add that in as an afterthought in the middle of the Oscar ceremony.

Where the hell were these two?

The Academy will never please everyone, but theyve got to make changes to the planning of the ceremony. Its way too long and implementing some of the suggestions will shorten it by at least an hour. Id also really like for them to release how many votes everyone gets, but I know that will never happen. Baby steps.

I mostly agree with everything that you said.

But did you see the short animated film "Maestro?" It's very funny, and has an excellent little twist ending. I was honestly bummed that it didn't win.

...and I will forever say that Scorsese won a Pity Oscar.

I posted the same ideas on how to shorten the show, with the songs and montanges. Glad you agree!

Speak for yourself, Crash was great. But I agree the Awards should be shorter.

WHAT???!!!

You didn't like ANY of the short films? I only saw the live action ones, but I thought they were all really good! And Crash was great! Maybe not the best movie of 06, but of the nominees that year, it was definitely the best. But as for shortening the show, I agree.

They need to cut a lot. That costume design demonstration with the models was embarassing! That dude from Dreamgirls doing the Eddie Murphy thing was ridiculous.

As a side note, Crash was a truly terrible film. History will not be kind to it. Any of the other nominees would have been a better choice, IMO.

Crash deserved the Oscar, one of the best films in years. The Departed on the other hand is overrated, as you call it. One of the most overated movies I've seen. And no, the awards aren't too long. At least not for me. They should even be longer and let the winners speak longer again.

They should at least cut the song numbers in half, I like it when they show us what is being nominated, like in the Costume Awards, and in the Script and the editing ones, thats a nice touch, and right there you can see much of the time why are they being nominated. The really REALLY bad decision is when suddenly, out of the nowhere,"Here's a new never before heard song... sung by Celine Dion"

Departed worthy - Crash unworthy

The Departed is such an awesome movie. It even had me liking Alec Baldwin by the end, and I always love to hate Matt Damon so I thought his role suited him perfectly.
Crash on the other hand, not a bad movie, but I didn't think it was anything more than stereotypical characters talking about their observations of stereotypes in society. It wasn't some big eye opener that had me thinking about it for days after. It was just the subject matter the Academy liked and maybe a performance or

Least that's my opinion. We all know the Academy play politics when handing out awards.

scorsese pity oscar

The reason why people say that is because he was so deserving earlier in his career and got nothing. The Departed garnered positive reviews, but is not seen as a masterpiece the way Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull are. Scorsese won for his entire body of work, not just because of The Departed.

The same thing happened when Russell Crowe won for Gladiator. He was far more deserving in The Insider and LA Confidential, but was passed over both times. He was good in Gladiator, but

Also, ditch the musical numbers. Did we really need to see three performances from Dreamgirls? We could just watch the movie.

Keep the short awards. Most people don't know the movies, but it's a huge opportunity for up and coming filmmakers, just as the West Bank Story director said.

You can't tell WHO wrote this article??? There are 2 spots at the very top of this article that clearly state BY STURDY. Not JoBlo, but BY STURDY. Hope this resolves that dilemma, at least... ;)

WOW!

For the reasons already stated, I disagree with you on almost everything in this rant, Sturdy, and I usually agree with you.

I WATCHED THE SHORTS

...and while I did really enjoy a few (Maestro, Matchgirl, and Saviour), I have to agree with Sturdy, practically the worst ones won!!! What is up with that!?! Song category is absolutely worthless...ditch it.

They should elimnate the best song category all together. There's enough award ceremonies for the music industry

Don't forget about the montage to writing and the montage to foreign films. It really did seem like they had montages after every commercial break. It probably wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't so long. Every montage was like ten minutes. And I honestly never even heard of any of the short films. I didn't really take that category seriously.
