... Don’t blame bootlegs for poor box office performance!
by Sturdy

I guess it’s human nature that whenever you put a lot of effort into a project and then present it to someone and they don’t like it, you immediately start pointing fingers and making up excuses for why you failed to live up to expectations. However, when you do that, you usually fail to see the real reason you failed in the first place.

Such is the case with Hollywood these days. Or at least it’s getting there. Earlier in the week, Eli Roth blamed online theft for the lackluster performance of HOSTEL 2. He made some decent points in his little rant, but I was surprised to see him dodge responsibility so fast. Also, do you think Eli Roth was more upset that his movie was leaked online, or that the people that saw it online trashed it? My guess is he’d be singing a different tune if the people who saw it actually liked it. It's to note that he removed the tirade from his blog, so maybe it was written after one too many beers or maybe he changed his mind.

Unfortunately, he’s set the precedent for filmmakers to blame online trading/stealing/viewing, etc. of their movies for their drop in box-office revenue. However, if they step back and look at what’s going on, I think they’ll realize that online theft has very little, if anything, to do with their poor box-office performance. I think now would be a good time to mention that I don’t condone the theft of intellectual property in any form and regardless of the impact on the industry, you shouldn’t do it. With that said, I bet there were more people that snuck into a theater to see HOSTEL 2 than people that downloaded it illegally. Does that mean we should call the National Guard to secure every movie theater?

I think Bijou Phillips is a little dirty for my taste.

Eli Roth and company need to look in the mirror for the real reason their films aren’t performing well. HOSTEL 2…really? Did he expect it to break records or something? The first one was alright, but did it really merit a sequel? The answer is a resounding NO! It didn’t merit a sequel, especially in a summer filled with the most sequels in Hollywood’s history. Sure, people love their favorite characters like Spider-man, Shrek and Captain Sparrow, but those are huge blockbusters, not horror movies. Every movie fan knew it was ridiculous to release it in the summer, against OCEAN’S 13, so he should be happy he at least made his money back.

Why would you challenge these guys?

Michael Moore's SICKO has also been making headlines for the same reason, but you have to wonder if illegal downloading will have any impact on a documentary targeting the health care system. Right now, Michael Moore doesn't seem to mind the bootlegging. However, I'd be very dissappointed in him if his movie tanks and the first finger he points is at the bootleggers. Then again, I can't see the Cracker Barrell crowd gathering around a computer to watch a bootleg copy of SICKO.

So c’mon Hollywood, stop bitching about illegal downloads. I don’t think the people downloading films illegally are impacting the overall box-office performance. If Hollywood isn’t going to change, then they must accept that high opening weekend grosses and sharp drop offs are going to be the norm for the big budget films and smaller films will be lucky to make anything. But look on the bright side, Hollywood can always make up for it with DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD sales.

Agree & Disagree

Bootlegging does have an impact on the movie industry in general, but Hostel 2 tanked because no one cared enough to want to see it.

Also, this line...

"I bet there were more people that snuck into a theater to see HOSTEL 2 than people that downloaded it illegally."

Ummm, no.

Piracy has no impact on filmmaking, and Roth is just looking for excuses. His film sucked, his sequel was unnecessary, and it flopped. Quit bitching and just accept that, Roth.

Dude

"With that said, I bet there were more people that snuck into a theater to see HOSTEL 2 than people that downloaded it illegally."

Are you serious? did thousands of people "snuck in to see Hostel 2" (or any other movie for that matter? Cuz that's the number of seeds in every torrent site out there.

Also it's a movie targeted at young people (not exactly the Wild Hogs crowd) who are internet savy, so it's obvious that the bootleg had an impact. Denyng that is being out of touch with

All that being said, with that release date and competition (and probable suckage/lack of novelty) the movie was never going to make a truckload of cash in the first place, but the bootleg had an impac nontheless.

THANK YOU. My friends kept telling me that Hostel 2 bombed because of the workprints. IT bombed because people are sick of the movies. I liked it, but felt it was covered ground. By the way, Sicko's making 25 millon opening weekend. that's how much of a draw moore has.

Great topic for this rant! I totally agree! Why anyone ever thought Roth was talented in the first place is beyond me. He's an American Uwe Boll.

Bootlegs are only a fraction of the problem

Hollywood would have you believe bootlegging is preventing every movie from reaching $100 million. But let's face it, at most pirating probably only effects thousands of dollars of the box office.

What's really hurting these movies are horrible ticket prices, quick DVD turnaround with extended cuts and weak ass sequels and remakes. I like a good sequel, but don't phone it in, like they did on Spider-man 3.

Right on. I agree wholeheartedly.

And if Roth thinks he's a "Tarantino god" maybe he should figure out Tarantino isn't a god either. He shouldn't even be counted in the top 10 directors list.

And Hostel in NO WAY demanded a sequel. The movie was over. This wasn't even a sequel. More like an episode. Same setting, new people. Both movies could stand alone on their major points.

Eli Roth should star in his own Hostel 3 - one of a group of talentless, down-on-his-luck Z-grade directors staying in a Slovakian hostel.

Good points made

I really dislike Roth, he thinks he's a Tarentino god or something after hostel, which was a huge disappointment. Any talentless mofo could put some gore and sex scenes together...

pah!

If the movies weren't so shitty, maybe people would go to the theaters and pay their $10 like everyone else instead of downloading it for free! That's the only reason why movies do so bad and get watched more on downloads or when they are released as home video DVD, HD-DVD, etc. The audience knows which filmmaker has a great reputation for putting out quality films worth paying money to see in a theater. If they know the filmmaker andor actor is mediocre at best, they'll skip it and rather

100% agreed

Roth is a piece of shit director that never had any talent to begin with. Cabin Fever was trash Hostel was trash and even though I haven't seen Hostel II and won't, i can go ahead and give it a resounding "fuck you" as well seeing his previous work.

I don't agree with this rant.

I think Eli Roth has a point and Hostel 2 was awesome, as was Hostel 1. It very much so merited a sequal, and it got a great one.

Roth is just being a baby bitch. What can you do? He's playing scapegoat instead of admitting his movie sucked sucked sucked.
