C'mon Hollywood #136

... drop the JLA movie!
by Sturdy

I have to say from the very beginning that I was never the biggest Justice League of America fan. I always felt that it was a lame excuse to get all of the biggest DC characters together because the writers had basically ran out of individual comic ideas. But thatís another argument for another day. The point now is that all hopes of a decent JLA movie have completely vanished and I have this sneaking suspicion that itís going to end up like the FANTASTIC FOUR, as in, very bad.

Say what you want about the film, but Brandon Routh was great.

The first problem with the proposed new JLA movie is no Brandon Routh as Superman. Itís funny, because heís the one I figured would be a shoe-in to play Superman in any medium since heís not exactly tearing up the big screen without the cape. Heck, I halfway expect him to pop up on American Express commercials. I also find it odd that the one thing critics agreed on after watching SUPERMAN RETURNS was that he did a great job and ďis SupermanĒ. It was hard enough for the public to get used to seeing someone other than Christopher Reeve in the blue tights, now we have to get used to someone else. This was the first mistake, but not the last.

Of course, Christian Bale is great in everything.

So aside from associating the JLA with Superman, a lot of other people associate it with the on again, off again Batman membership. So it would make sense that Batman should appear at some point in the film. Although thatís to be determined, you canít have Batman without Christian Bale and heís already said he ainít gonna do it. So we finally find a great Batman to replace Michael Keaton, and now we either have to get used to someone else, or do without him. Something doesnít seem right there.

But of course, there are other characters in the JLA other than Supes and Bats. Most notably, thereís Wonder Woman. My feelings on whether or not she can make it on the big screen are mixed, but you need her established before throwing her in with the JLA (in my humble opinion). To do that, you need a stunningly beautiful, talented actress and the most obvious choice has respectfully declined.

Iíll admit, sometimes her ab muscles scare me.

So what does this mean for director George Miller? This means heís going to have to hire a bunch of no-name or second rate actors. I have nothing against the cast of The O.C., but none of them should be cast as superheroes. Superheroes of this magnitude need famous, talented faces and youíre not going to find anyone to take these roles. No decent actor is going to play Supes, Bats, WW, or any other superhero without their own movie first. So like I said, Mr. Miller is going to have to resort to unproven actors and rejects from the WB network.

A boy can dream, canít he?

So címon Hollywood, drop the JLA movie. The best bet at this point is to can the whole thing. Take it on the chin and move on. Or, push hard for a Batman vs. Superman movie that Wolfgang Peterson was working on a while ago. Give Routh and Bale a reason to come back and of course, pay them a lot of money.

Agreed...happy feet spoilers!

The JLA film will suck. I realize this breaks the rule of not judging things before you see them but not one thing about this flick is at all a good sign. The casting (paticularly Wally The Flash) makes me want to cry, or punch something. No. Someone. The casting agent. It makes me want to punch the casting agent. When the cops come I could just say...this is the mensa candidate who is casting JLA! Then the cop would say, "I used to read DC comics as a kid. How about you hold this individual

How about you hold this individual down and I will take a turn punching said individual as well." Even George Miller, who blessed us with the Mad Max Trilogy, was responsible for some freaking movie where the world is united by a bunch of singing (I will censor my profanity with "vacuum") VACUUMING penguins! I was almost positive I had gone vacuuming insane when that part came on. When I realized it was really vacuuming happening I contemplated writing Miller and ask him if he had lost his vacuuming mind! What the mothervacuuming heck happened there? I understand many on this board love this flick, and I apologise, but do you want Justice League in the hands of some mothervacuumer that might end JLA with something equally as horrible? Like Flash dying perhaps? Oh no! I ruined it! They'll have to start from scratch now. Shut the vacuum up everybody knew that already. I SAID THEY HAVE TO START FROM SCRATCH NOW. thank you

Sorry Double Post

Sorry. Somehow double posted. Perhaps my rage seeped into my computer and manifested itself in that Tron world as a second post. Tron. I like that movie.

Stop the pain!!!

I'm one with the masses in that I don't want to see a JLA movie! The rumours floating around the net regarding casting has been horrible enough! Not certain the director is the right person because we're not sure if he has the nerdness to be faithful to the material. He's already not faithful by casting young unknowns who don't even look the part, let alone act. Don't care how hot everyone thinks Jessica Biehl is, but she was never right for the role. I gotta hand it to her though, for

I gotta hand it to her though, for passing. Smart move! And c'mon! We all knew there is no chance of Routh and Bale to be onboard to reprise their roles as Superman and Batman. No freaking way! The whole project sounds to be rushed and half-assed and it's going to flop majorly! I doubt it but I hope it won't effect the future of the other DC franchises. I think it will just hurt the chances of another JLA movie.

WAY TO GO, STURDY!!

I love the Justice League. As much as I'd like to see more of them, I'd hate to see a live-action movie. Can anyone spell D-O-R-K-Y? Or maybe C-A-M-P-Y? Or maybe BATMAN & ROBIN-ALL-OVER-AGAIN? Drop it, Warner. It's just not going to happen. The Dark Knight's going great and I'm sure you could do more for Superman. Maybe have cameos in the Man Of Steel by the Lantern, Arrow...Wonder Woman even. But never...everrrr....in a movie of their own.

TOTALLY AGREE

The JLA movie is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard. I don't think I remember ever NOT wanting a movie to be made, but I do now, especially if it means no Superman sequel. Well said.

Agreed. And, hopefully, WB'll come to its senses and ditch this bomb.

JLA's probably going to make "Batman & Robin" look like a Merchant Ivory production.

And, since JLA's already derailed Singer's Superman and Whedon's Wonder Woman, is it any wonder that Nolan's, reportedly, none too pleased as well?

Besides, most people (that is, non-fanboys) will watch a movie about an alien demi-god (Superman) or a modern day Zorro (Batman)...but most people'll also laugh at a movie that tries to combine the two. (Hell, I'm a fanboy and even I have trouble with that

(Hell, I'm a fanboy and even I have trouble with that concept; I just can't imagine, say, Routh's Superman popping-up in Nolan's Bat-Films...he just wouldn't fit.)

So, at best, JLA'll appeal to Joe Fanboy...but not Joe Public.

At worst, the WB's Bat-Franchise will be completely Schumachered...again.

I have never believed that this movie will be made. I don't care how many news stories it gets, I'll continue to not believe it until film actually rolls.

I believe the JLA movie is just smoke & mirrors to delay the Singer Superman sequel long enough for his contract to expire.

Casting aside, my biggest worry about this is the too many characters scenario that we've seen plague comic movies in the past.

I don't see how they can pull all these characters together, toss in a villian (or 12) and give people something watchable. At least give the other characters a cameo in another DCU movie, set up even the slightest relationship between them before trying to explain a half dozen character origins in what should be an action film.

Should this go full steam ahead,

I've read so much news on this thing, that I honestly don't know what to think. I just REALLY hope that this flick doesn't alienate Chris Nolan, causing him to decide NOT to do a 3rd batman movie after TDK. Because that would suck.

Agreed. The way JLA is headed now, its teen titans... I will not accept in my mind, another superman or batman on the big screen for the next 10 years. We have them. Worse than having one actor play multiple heroes in different movies... is changing the actor playing the ONE hero.

I agree Warner should drop JLA movie. No Routh, no Bale, and Miller is not the kind of director you would want for this kind of movie (aside Mad Max, his recent movies suck bigtime). And if you have to make this movie, make it animated with original voice talents of Routh and Bale.

A little harsh

Agreed that JLA in general wasn't the best comic (and always paled to some of the classic storylines of Avengers) but it is George Miller and with such a vast pool of stories/characters to choose from I think it could be pulled off.

I don't think having different actors will be a big deal in any case. Routh was good, but it's not like SR captured the popular imagination of the masses and ushered in a new era of Kal-El. He was fine in a ok movie. Bale was superb, but I doubt somehow that JLA

Whether it be different arists/renditions in the comics or different actors [link] in classic roles, it has a hell of a lot to do with the [link]

Let's at least see how the script turns out to see if Miller has the building blocks to make something great before piling on.
