C'mon Hollywood #160

May. 13, 2008by:

... let Star Wars go George!
by Sturdy

I have to preface this rant by clearly stating that I absolutely love STAR WARS. I feel that it is truly a great film. The merits of the films have been debated for almost 30 years now, but I love them. And despite what all the haters say, I also enjoyed the newest trilogy, bad dialogue and all. Basically, I want everyone that reads this to know that Im a huge Star Wars fan. So its with the utmost respect that I have to ask George Lucas and everyone at Lucasfilm to let the Star Wars story go.

There was a time when I was dying to find out what happened within the Star Wars universe after Episode 6. In fact, Im such a fan (see: nerd) that Ive actually read over 20 Star Wars books since Timothy Zahn wrote Heir to the Empire. I had to give them up when they had Luke go to the dark side and the whole Jacen and Jaina storylines got silly. The point is that the post Episode 6 storyline is dried up and I dont want to see another movie, TV show or animated feature focusing on this timeframe. I havent heard anything about a future trilogy or anything of the sort. Consider this a pre-emptive request on my part.

Its just not right.

However, what we are already seeing is an animated CLONE WARS movie and a supposed TV show focused on the events between 3 and 4. When I first read the headline that they were making a CLONE WARS movie, I could barely muster enough enthusiasm to read the article. The CLONE WARS cartoons were decent enough, but I dont know about a feature length film. Is there really a fan base for this anymore? The new trilogy has been desecrated by web sites and critics alike, so jumping back in and furthering the stories established in the new trilogy seems like a bad idea. I dont think todays kids (the target audience for all Star Wars films) are still interested in Star Wars.

Meh

As far as the TV show goes, I dont see that working either. Granted, there is about a 20 year gap between Episode 3 and Episode 4, but I still have to ask if theres anyone that still cares. Ive also read that the show will focus on new characters, which makes the idea even worse. The only way Id be interested is if they focused on a character I was familiar with and even then, I dont think it would work. There are a few characters that might have interesting storylines, but I dont want anyone else playing Han Solo or any of the other human characters, so that kind of narrows the choices. Overall, this show should never happen.

Let's remember it the way it was...

Basically, I think George Lucas and everyone at Lucasfilm have milked Star Wars for everything its worth. I love all six films and I enjoyed reading the books, but the story is tapped out. Its time for George to move on and start working on some of those pet projects hes been talking about for the past 20 years. Hes made oodles of cash from Star Wars and every new project drains the Star Wars legacy just a little more. Please just let it go, and allow fans to enjoy the stories that have already been told.

Allow Star Wars to be kept underground for awhile. Meaning only continue with the video games, than bring it back in about 19 years like Indy and the fans will come crawling back...

Star Wars

I think you are right but at the same time i think it would be possible for some genius someday to come along and add another story to the already great universe. The new movies overall were OK with sith being great but I still think if someone like Chris Nolan got their hands on a star wars movie it could be phenominal. Either way Lord of the Rings is a far better story.

for

I'm a SW fan also and I couldn't agree more. I suppose they'll add to the less than stellar new trilogy since they've already fucked it up enough.

Put down the K.Y Jelly George

With all his might, George can't come up with new stuff and frankly Whatever you see is the scraps of his empire.

Kicking George's Ass to a pulp:)

People stop corn-holing Star wars. it's lost its flair, taste and it's not original no more.

We have a stupid tradition in our country that whenever something good comes along we just wanna milk it to the bone and ask for seconds!! Prequels, sequel, before, afters. The companies know we will all gobble it up with no question asked! Brainwashed to they're product!!!! thats how they muster up the balls to make unwanted prequels and sequels that damage it's originality.
I don't want Star

I don't want Star Wars to be like another Star trek or Terminator that it's become a point of shame & mockery. George Lucas, if you want more money just open up a car wash or something man, and stop fucking up your only creation. (Indy included).

George how did you come up with JABBA's SON!!!!
COME ON MAN!!!!!!
whats next Greedo's lesbians Daughter!!!!

I heard the t.v. show would play out as more of a drama, with much less action. No thanks.

FYI

Just to set the record straight, the animated show, which the movie is launching is a direct spin off from the Cartoon Network "Clone Wars" mini-series, an dis not about the 20 year gap between 3 and 4, but about the Clone Wars themselves, and I think that the miniseries is the best thing to come from the new trilogy, so I am excited for it, but alas, it has gotten too big for it's own good.

I think lucas shold just drop the clone wars thing I think we know the story now and the bits I got of it from the cartoon was good enough for me. We all may think that ending the story would be great but you know when the show comes out its gonna get fuckin super bowl ratings. Its a monster we cant stop and I dont think lucas can either so why not make a few bucks off it for future lucus's.

MERCY KILLING

That whole galaxy just needs to be destroyed. I hate what Star Wars has been reduced to. Consider Empire Strikes Back...now consider this new Clone Wars movie.

It's like going from Chris Nolan's Batman films to the animated 60's Batman and Robin TV series.

Amen!

I agree whole heartedly. This franchise was dead to me after episode 2 dropped a deuce all over it.

it's his story, he was at a point where he wanted to tell his story his way and got no satisfaction at the time. The star wars series can't degrade itself if nobody watches them now, just don't see anything new out of the franchise.

Agreed!

The cow is officially dry. I love Star Wars, I grew up on it. But the prequel trilogy sucked, the expanded universe been gotten ridiculously over-done. Frankly, I just want a good DVD box set of the original films, restored, with more features than you can shake a stick at. And that's it. Done. No more. It's time to move on, George. And you better not drag Indy down the same beaten path you took Star Wars. I love your stuff, but enough is enough. Let it go. It's in everyone's better interest.

But...

...Nobody's forcing you to watch these things. Unless I'm the only person Lucas hasn't visited, put a gun to my head and forced me to watch and buy Lucasfilm products? Yeah, that's probably the only explanation.

Im at the point where Id rather see stories in the Star Wars Universe that have nothing to do with the 6 Episodes, I'm sick of George trying to tie everything together because like you said, it just cheapens everything that's already been done and said. So Id rather they found some new stories to tell in the same Universe if they need to milk the Star Wars brand any further, something like the Jedi Knight games. Familiar, but different.

Otherwise, yeah, let it go, and give us something new!

I've always LIKED Star Wars, but have never considered myself an all-out fanboy, until last weekend, when I watched all three of the original trilogy. It was then that I realized what a masterpiece that trilogy really is. All that to say--I agree. They need to leave the Star Wars universe behind.
