C'mon Hollywood #176

... Aaron Sorkin needs a better gig!
by Sturdy

I had to accept a while ago that sites like Facebook and MySpace were here to stay. They represent a delusional, self-important society, made up of people that think their problems and lives are somehow important enough that people want to read about them. But the jokes on me because people flock to them. Furthermore, if youre online regularly and you dont have an account on either site, youre the equivalent of the only kid in school without the popular toy. And no one wants to be that kid. But when I read the news that Aaron Sorkin was going to be writing a screenplay based off of Facebook, a little part of me died inside.

My main problem is that Aaron Sorkin is part of a very small, elite group of screenwriters that every screenwriter strives to be in; the group that can write whatever they want. Granted, he stunk up the screen with CHARLIE WILSONS WAR (which I blamed on the script), but he has enough victories under his belt that a miss here and there wont hurt him. So I have to ask why in the world is he tackling this project? Unless hes getting paid ogles of cash, in which case, writers have to take their paychecks where they can get them.

It was never the same after Lowe left.

So I checked out his Facebook page and he freely admits that he knows nothing about Facebook and isnt really all that internet savvy. Now, Im not the kind of guy that thinks writers should be experienced in the subject theyre writing. After all, thats why God gave famous people assistants and researchers. But his lack of knowledge on the subject once again begs the question; why?

I wonder if this will make the movie.

Also, is the story of Facebook really that interesting? They cant have a two hour movie about the ladettes can they? For starters, no one seems to be able to agree on many details about its creation or the people who created it. As of now, theres speculation that the facts in the upcoming book (of which, Sorkin is basing his screenplay) are actually not true at all. So how why in the world did Sony greenlight a film like this and how did they manage to get someone like Sorkin to write the screenplay?

We all want the truth, but Im not sure Sorkin will give it to us.

But I really expected more from Sorkin than a Facebook movie. Hes made a name for himself doing intelligent, politically-themed dramas that I would expect his next progression would be to an Oscar-worthy drama or maybe a sharply witted dramedy utilizing the wit and charm he constantly showed on The West Wing. Hes too talented to waste his time on an idea/pitch like this. So cmon Aaron Sorkin, challenge yourself with something thats both interesting and intelligent. Leave the Facebook stuff to the amateurs.

I liked "Charlie Wilson's War" actually, maybe even more than "A Few Good Men." Despite Sorkin's drug thing, I agree he's one of the few writers out there who should be able to write their own paycheck. Having said that, I'm already embarrassed I'm a member of Facebook (though I became one long before it became "popular"). And for me, since I graduated college most of my friends aren't members, so it's irrelevant.

I'm going to go and make a Facebook page that honors "smooveluv." Right after I figure out how to use Facebook.

Sorkin Suggests Coke

The second Sorkin suggested, on 'Studio 60', that coke heads were harmless compared to alcoholics, he lost me forever.

who is with me

Sports Night: The Movie

And while we're on the subject of current Hollywood Bigwigs pulling their past works out of the closet, why aren't we seeing a "Freaks and Geeks" movie?

Come on people, be more awesome!

Crusty cynicism

The crusty cynicism is charming in quaint predictable way (the column's running title speaks to a lack of versatility. What will it be today - whining or bitching?)

But trivializing social networking applications as merely a platform for self-obsessed babies makes you sound like an ignorant Luddite. Maybe this whole internet thing is just dumb fad, too.

Adam Sorkin is over-rated, as was West Wing. Talk about an over valued sense of self importance... every episode I had the honor of

A movie based on Facebook? Doesn't sounds promising, but I'd have to know a shred of the premise before casting judgement. Glad youre not hamstrung with such limitations.

Charlie Wilsons War was ah-ight. Clearly nothing special though. I mean that much is Clear. Are we clear?

50/50

He needs a better writing gig. (look out of Sports Night comment) SportsNight was a great little show and with West Wing he was slaping america with his brain. Charlie Wilsons War was a good flick, but he needs a new peice of material that can really show how great he is.

I agree with bob020787

Charlie Wilson's War was great. The BEST part about the film was the script. FAR better than American President, also written by Sorkin. I'm not hip to the news about the Facebook movie either, but I had to defend Sorkin's GREAT script for CWW.

Sorkin did make an oscar worthy film in Charlie Wilson's War. That film was great all around as it satired politics perfectly. You clearly did not understand the film at all.
