C'mon Hollywood #209

... No Whedon = No Buffy
by Sturdy

Im one of those guys that believes that Joss Whedon can do no wrong. Whether it be an independent movie or a sing-along-blog, Whedon has the Midas touch with screenplays. Im also one of those fans that feels we can still do a Buffy/Angel movie, even though the shows have been off the air for a while now. They still have a lot of loose ends to tie up and the fans are still there. However, the recent news that Fran Rubel Kuzui is looking to re-launch the series from scratch is just an abomination on everything that Whedon created.

To be honest, I actually dont think this will ever happen. Fran and her husband dont have much else but they do still own the rights to Buffy. However, the challenges and fan outcry over a restart at this point will likely derail any funding Vertigo Entertainment was planning on contributing. Its one thing to remake Asian films, but its a whole other thing to take a franchise as cherished as Buffy and redo it so soon. Also, the fact that they have no idea for the film doesnt bode well for them. This clearly isnt about telling a story, this is about milking a franchise that Whedon built to get Kuzuis name back in the publics eye.

Okay, Im still not sure about Dollhouse

But let me try to suppress the anger and point out the obvious, which is that Whedon would probably be up for writing a continuation of the Buffy/Angel saga. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz havent exactly lit up the big screen since their shows were canceled, so theres no reason to think theyd refuse the payday opportunity. I dont know what the relationship between Whedon and the Kuzuis is like, but I cant imagine it would get better if the Kuzuis completely ditch Whedon and do a Buffy movie on their own. The logical thing is for Kuzui to call up Whedon and they make the movie together.

Hilarious

One thing that they have to keep in mind is that the franchise is where its at because of Whedon and some of the other talented writers that worked on the show. Without Whedon, you have nothing but a cheesy, early 90s movie that no one remembers. This isnt Batman, where you can give it to a talented director and great actor and let them find an already written story to put on the screen. All of the Buffy stories have been either written by Whedon or created with his involvement somehow. Trying to take his idea and start over in a whole new direction is just wrong on so many levels.

Nothing without Whedon.

I seriously hope that Fran doesnt have any delusions of grandeur regarding her impact on the Buffy universe. Aside from having the foresight to find Whedons script, all of the success of the Buffy franchise has been achieved in spite of her, not because of her. Her memory might be short, but lets not forget that the Buffy movie was a huge flop, even with Luke Perry at the height of his 90210 fame (that was meant to be sarcastic).

Cmon, they gotta end up together

If I seem angry at this, its because I am. With all the shitty remakes and TV-to-movies we get these days, Ive been patiently waiting for Whedon to go back to the Buffyverse and do a Buffy/Angel movie. There are actually storylines that need to be finished up or continued. But if this movie does end up getting made, you can be sure that another Whedon-backed Buffy movie will never see the light of day.

Both were brilliant series and I am a huge fan of Whedon and his work. It would be a crying shame to leave him out of the loop if there was any thought to a revamp of the series.

That being said I cant see myself enjoying the series again, but I would enjoy a one off movie tying everything up.

Keep up the good work!

Buffy/Spike movie? Why not?!:)

Yeah, the idea for a Buffy movie without Joss Whedon is LAME!!! I'm a huge fan of the Buffy show, I love the Whedon's tv show with Sarah M Gellar and James Marsters, not the cheesy, stupid movie with Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry!!! I watched this movie after the tv-show and I was strongly disappointed!
And Buffy and Spike gotta end up together!!! I'd love to see a Buffy/Angel crossover movie created by Joss Whedon, but Buffy should end up with Spike! I love Angel, but Spike is a way better

And I'm totally agree with Rehabber I'd love to see Spike movie as well created by Joss Whedon and Brian Lynch!! I love Brian Lynch's comic books with Spike!

I would not care if a new Buffy was brought on, never cared for SMG. In fact the only member of the cast that needs to be brought back is James Marsters as Spike. IMO, Spike was the greatest character ever in a TV series. Forget the Buffy movie, just make a Spike movie.

I used to love Buffy but I sort of grew out of it, it hasn't aged well with me - still, a Buffy without Whedon is unthinkable! Hardcore fans would unaminously revolt and then really, who would you have left as a potential audience?...

I could do without the Buffy movie, but if they get Whedon and the original cast back then I could muster up some interest. Haven't seen Dollhouse, and unfortunately I don't think Serenity did well enough financially to hope for any kind of sequel.

Firefly Was A Sci-Fi Western

"Firefly" actually combined elements from both sci-fi and the western genre. It was definitely not pure sci-fi (in fact, it was probably more a western with space ships). However, sci-fi does not have to have aliens and monsters.

Only Firefly and, to a lesser degree, Dollhouse (which has improved since episode six) interest me, but I respect Joss Whedon as a writer. I agree that a Serenity sequel film would be more appealing to me (A trilogy could rival the Star Wars original trilogy and

how about something else?

I mean how about Whedon makes something that is more than cult status and achiever commercial as well as crtical success? Say what you will but Buffy didnt make that much money, I mean look at the sets and makeup done for that show it screams low budget. Firefly was fun but it had little science fiction for a sci-fi show (where were all the aliens and monsters) and action really was lacking. His stuff has never made money and there is a reasone he is like a 3rd tier director.

Hmmm....

I'd let Buffy get flushed down the toilet if it meant that Joss would concentrate on a "Serenity" sequel.

Both Buffy and Angel were such epic, incredible shows and there is so much more that could be done with all of the characters, it just makes absolutely no sense whatsoever for them to just reboot it. Fans--those of us who actually love the series and have been there--WANT a movie (if not a film franchise) with those characters. There is simply no reason at all to reboot it and it's hard to believe they're going to destroy it like this.

I say...

... reboot it Dark Knight/Star Trek style with a younger, sexier actress (Hayden Panettiere?).

The movie was cheesy, but I always liked it (and it had Paul Rubins). As for the TV show, I could never get into it, it never seemed particulary special. I know a lot of people do love it, but that just makes it popular, not a mark of quality.

Lastly, Gellar hasn't been attractive since Cruel Intentions, so definately dump her.

Kuzui probably got all excited because of Twilight and thinks vampires=goldmine. I would never watch a Buffy reboot. Bring on Serenity II: The Search for Wash!

Agree with everything you just said! This is the stupidest idea. I am a HUGE Buffy fan and I would have 0 interest in seeing this film.

I completely agree with everything in this article. Except that I now really like Dollhouse. I quite liked it from the start, but when it hit it's stride at episode 6, and especially in the final 2 episodes with Alan Tudyk, Dollhouse was exceptional television, and something very different, and very Joss.

Definitely agree that they should put money into a sequel to Serenity (or better yet, a mini-series follow on to Firefly), or AT LEAST get Joss to make a movie based in HIS Buffy

And dillisasexyman, you're welcome to your opinion, but "Fuck Joss Whedon" is slightly harsh, regardless of taste, it's not like he's Uwe Boll or something.

Agreed on a Firefly sequel being frist priority. Loose ends were mended, but so muchmore to explore in that verse.

Sorry, but the Browncoat in me is saying: scrap those Buffy ideas and get JW to make a "Firefly" sequel.
