... Tom Welling as the new Superman!
by J.A. Hamilton

Theatrically, Supermans seen better days. The originals aside, there was tremendous hype and essentially demand for re-imagining the series, especially after the overwhelming success of BATMAN BEGINS. SUPERMAN RETURNS, despite cool trailers and Brandon Rouths excellent candor, just didnt cut it. Since then, Supermans theatrical future has been in limbo, court and lately, the gutter. So the Wachowskis are looking to direct, well who gives a rats ass! The director is just one piece of the puzzle, they still need a great script (which RETURNS didnt have) and they need a solid actor to wear the S. And amidst all this chaos, one guys been consistently making it happen for the better part of a decade. Tom Welling. Hes got this cool little show (you may have heard of it) which goes by the name of "Smallville."

After watching ZACK AND MIRI, I'm not so sure that's milk

Look, I know what you might be thinking. "Smallville" is SMALLTIME because its on the tube and not the big screen, but before you take THAT route I need you to consider a couple things. One, if you were to Google is Tom Welling the best Superman youd find quite a long list of fans who share my point of view. And sure, "Smallvilles" on the CW network, home to laughable nonsense like 90210, ONE TREE HILL and GOSSIP GIRL but "Smallvilles" also heading into its ninth season, meaning Tom Welling knows as much about the man of steel as creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Hes been living and breathing Clark Kent for almost ten years, longer than any actor before him, including the late Christopher Reeve. There can be no denying the mans loyalty to the character, and I was blown away by the many layers hes added to Supermans life on an emotional level.

This odd pic is one reason I was unsure about the show

Now before you start thinking this is simply a die hard fan speech, Ill be honest and say that I wasnt always into "Smallville." My dad and brother were big fans from day one, but to me, the first couple seasons looked like they transferred Clark Kent to Degrassi Junior High which just so happened to be heavy on the kryptonite infected student base. It wasnt until I caught an episode featuring red kryptonite (and how much of a bad ass Clark becomes when exposed to it) that I decided to give this show a real chance. I was far from disappointed and grew into the fan I am today (I have a "Smallville" calender for Christ sake). Bottom line, this show (and most of its cast including Welling) are underrated and deserve a bigger spot in the limelight. Oh, and being a (HUGE) fan of Erica Durances super cleavage, I wont really get into Wellings dreamy looks and sculpted bod, though hes clearly covered in THAT department as well.

Potential JUSTICE LEAGUE cast? I think so

Another something to consider are some of the players who came to help Tom in his adventures. First and foremost, we have Christopher Reeve himself showing up as Dr. Virgil Swann. And if Reeve was willing to come into this series, you wanna imagine he was behind Wellings portrayal of Superman. Theres also Terrence Stamp (who played Zod in SUPERMAN 2) weighing in as Clarks Kryptonian father, Jor-El. Now as far as Clarks character, I find Welling added more humanity and compassion than any actor before him. Reeves Clark was a bumbling imbecile and his Superman was calm and very confident, like he just KNEW he could brake your spine if he wanted to. Welling brings a different game to the table, one that explores the constant struggle of emotions that come with all his power and responsibility. Hes by far the most noble and charismatic Superman to date.

That's right bitches, Superman ain't scared of a little fog

Now Ill admit THE FOG wasnt Wellings finest hour, but he did his best and in all honestly hes the ONLY reason I watched that turdburger of a movie. Reeve was an awesome Superman, and Im not taking anything away from Routh either. However, Rouths contract is now up and I cant see him waiting around for a call, nor should he. Some might argue that Tom lacks experience, that "Smallvilles" just another teen soap opera, but lets be honest here, Routh did fine and he was a damn model (and lest we forget that Reeve himself was an unknown before being cast in SUPERMAN). Tom Welling has a huge following and thats exactly what the next SUPERMAN flick needs! Warner Brothers Pictures has been singing the "Smallville" theme song for some time now, because they really do NEED somebody to save them. My advice? Tom Welling. Whos with me?

I recently saw an episode and was pleasantly surprised by it. I actually liked it. Also, I have to say, Lois is the most interesting she's ever been in ANY of the other versions of Supes. I really like Erica Durances take on the character. Plus, she's by far the hottest Lois Lane. Even hotter than Teri Hatcher! So I'm definitely hip to this news.

Fear a Two Hour Episode

I would be far too afraid they would try to turn it into a two-hour big budget smallville episode. (Think Star Trek TNG movies)

If they can reboot superman movies minus the smallville and returns, I could go for it...maybe

OK, FIRST ...

... Smallville sucks! It didn't always suck but now after finale of the last season, it sucks. Second, Routh is/was far better choice than Welling. And third, if that were potential Justice League cast, then God help us all. Superman needs a clean and fresh start or at least a decent sequel, and getting Welling on board would only make people start questioning if Smallville just went big screen or what, and that's a bad idea. So, to conclude, Welling should stay in Smallville, and that is

Totally agree, Tom Welling has been Superman for the best part of a Decade now and he surely deserves a shot at the big league.

Maybe we should start a petition?

Personally I'm not so sure about the Smallwood series becoming a movie.

Firstly, the whole 'justice league' cast thing is pretty silly, you'd have people complaining about the film like some complained about Lost when they said 'the amazing thing is all the inhabitants of the island just happen to be pretty'. Although in this case it would be young and pretty.

I don't doubt Welling's ability as an actor as I've only seen a couple of episodes of the show, however, he hardly has a 'huge

I don't doubt Welling's ability as an actor as I've only seen a couple of episodes of the show, however, he hardly has a 'huge following' and if he does it is only in The States...even though it is on every week, nobody over here watches the show. Also, am I right in thinking that he has been playing a young Clark Kent for years now...he still hasn't actually become Superman so I don't think we can start saying he is better at playing the character than anyone else yet.

Another thing is, movies and television are two completely different things, if something works really well as a television series, doesn't neccessarily mean that it will adapt to a movie well, it has to reach beyond its loyal fanbase and have a short and engaging enough story with none of the cliffhangers or continuous relationship dramas that TV shows rely on for effect.

Sorry to say J.A. and I know you addressed it, but I feel this is basically a fanboy thing, I'm sure many people out there would campain for Kevin Conroy to play Batman...doesn't mean its a good idea though.

The formula for Smallville...

"I don't know if I should tell Lana about my powers"
Repeat ad infinitum
Play James Blunt/other crap music every now and then.

New actor as Supes please. An older actor- someone like Jon Hamm.

Superman Returns was a great movie. Don't take my word for it, Quentin Tarantino loved it too and if your solution for a better Superman movie is an adaptation of "Smallville" than I pity your poor taste

It's always good to look at a situation from a different pair of eyes. I've been a HUGE fan of Smallville since the word GO, but i never really thought of Tom on the big screen. Everything you say about his potrayal is true. The reason I am a Superman fan has always been this... A man has all that power, and yet CHOOSES to serve a race of people he could easily dominate. Tom has always played up to this aspect of Supes, and for this I agree.. TOM WELLING FOR SUPERMAN!

Smallville's an okay TV show (haven't watched in years). But if you made it into a movie, it would be "Smallville the Movie," not "Superman." Do they call him Superman in the show ever? And does he ever wear the cape? I stopped watching ages ago, so I don't know. And if you haven't been keeping up with "Smallville" will the movie make any sense in context, or will they start from scratch and introduce the characters all over again. There's a reason "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" weren't adapted

And I was a fan of "Superman Returns." Bryan Singer didn't need to make a semi-sequel to the '80s Supes, but he's got an eye for metaphor in super-hero movies, and Routh was pretty awesome.

Frack Smallville, frack reboots!

Superman returns is a frackin' great movie, one of my favourite comic book movies of all time. Smallville sucks (I haven't seen one episode, and I never will)! Give less money to Bryan Singer (let's say 150 M$ instead of 260 M$), let's put more action to satisfy the public of today (the one that thinks pop corn and coca-cola are the two greatest things in the world), without making it a soulless crap like the hugely stupid The incredible Hulk (story: a dick championship, how interesting). Not Bad, but Wrong

Tom Welling may be alright on the show, but I do not want to see him don the cape. His version of Superman is well fitted for the TV show, which is intended for the same audience that watches other shows on the same channel, while getting in the older crowd cuz it's Superman. If he gets made Superman, it'll be "Smallville: The Movie" where Jimmy Olsen's dead and Lois Lane is a dumb stripper. I'm not asking for a complete remake of Chris Reeve, because quite frankly, it just can't work anymore.

It shouldn't be "dark", but not so...well "Fantastic Four" either. Make him frustrated with the world and those around him, not emo over Lois. Smallville's an alright show, but not film material and Tom Welling's an alright Superman, but not leading man in a blockbuster material. I'm sure Chris Reeve came back not because the show was good, but because he got another chance to be associated with his claim to fame and to relive the glory days. Terrence Stamp was in it because....well, c'mon he was in Star Wars: Episode I, Get Smart and The Haunted Mansion, do you really think he knows how to say no?

Also: KEEP THIS AWAY FROM THE WACHOWSKIS!

Quit with the "Fracks"

I like Brandon Routh. I like Tom Welling more. If WB is interested in making money and putting a good actor into the role of Superman, why not use the guy who has been doing it for the better part of a decade?

Like J.A. said, he has the following and while many episodes of Smallville leave MUCH to be desired, Welling (and Durance) always seem to come out unscathed. I've been watching Smallville since epiosde one, religiously. It is not a great show; it has many missteps each season. The

I've been watching Smallville since epiosde one, religiously. It is not a great show; it has many missteps each season. The first couple of seasons were rough because it never ventured out beyond the freak of the week mode to delve into the origin of Superman for a long enough period of time.

Season Eight's finale withstanding, the past three - four seasons have done an excellent job in getting Clark ready to take on the hero persona. I, personally, have enjoyed watching Tom in the Clark Kent role for years now; I think it's time he stepped into the Superman role, if he wants to that is...

I think he's right

I've been watching the show for a long time. Since day one and from the start i always wondered how Welling ended up only on the show. He is by far the best Clark Kent and as the last few seasons of the show highlight, he is on the fast track to being the best Superman hands down. Unlike other versions of superman Smallville makes Clark a real person and far more believable as a hero. Tom has grown to understand not only Supermans role and powers, but he also has years of experience

Thats something truly lost in any other telling of the superman myth.

Yes Im a fan but there is little question in my mind that Welling can pull it off and make a movie of superman way better then anyone else. He has a DECADE as the character under his belt. As long as someone writes a good script and they get an action oriented director any movie with him cast would be a hit.

Superman Returns was a good movie. I'm not gonna say it was amazing and one of the best superhero movies made, but it was a fun movie to watch. I personally would like to see a new direction for Superman though and I think Routh should remain Superman. I think that in order to keep Superman an icon in the theatre, you need to stick to one. Too many people are considered Superman already (Routh, Cain, Welling). We don't need another actor taking that title. So I say go in a new direction but

My thoughts on this issue and what Warner Bros. should do:

I'm not going to be as harsh as some people, because you're entitled to your opinion and you've obviously thought this out. Having said though, I couldn't disagree more with the entire article. I watched SMALLVILLE for four seasons until I eventually came to my senses and realized that the only reason I was watching (aside from Lana and Lois) was because the show constantly teased the grand idea that ONE DAY CLARK WILL BECOME SUPERMAN. The amount of foreshadowing just got too much for me,

I watched SMALLVILLE for four seasons until I eventually came to my senses and realized that the only reason I was watching (aside from Lana and Lois) was because the show constantly teased the grand idea that ONE DAY CLARK WILL BECOME SUPERMAN. The amount of foreshadowing just got too much for me, because after four seasons of watching Clark go through more action than he does later in life while actually BEING Superman, I just wanted him to BE Superman already. SMALLVILLE might not be completely worthless, but everything from the cast to the writing just screams CW. When you compare the show to something like LOST or TRUE BLOOD, the difference in quality is obvious. What should Warner Bros. do? The answer is simple: move on from what we have seen before. Singers film was great as a homage, but nobody wanted to see a homage they wanted to see todays technology used to make Superman do things never before possible in a Superman movie. They didnt want layers of subtext and deeper meaning, they wanted action. Like the first Hulk movie, Superman does not need to tackle issues of family, belonging and identity. Sure it makes for a smarter movie, but if you want a BLOCKBUSTER hire a director who can handle massive amounts of action (the Wachowski Brothers are a perfect choice), hire an actor that could fit the role but DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK EXACTLY LIKE CHRISTOPHER REEVE and have Superman literally pick up buildings to throw at his enemy. THAT is what audiences want to see. Do that and you will succeed.

mc teague might not be a bad choice for the wachowski's version...

there have been some good things about the show over the years, but it does not overshadow the "god awful" that is smallville. welling is decent on the show. superman returns could have used a bit more action: agreed. the script handled a contemporary real world take on the world, lois and clark and what might have occurred if he just took off for a few years & returned. we knew the approach was going to respect the donnerverse going into it & lois could have been cast & portrayed better.

Although I'm not to interested in seeing another Superman movie at all, if its made, Welling deserves the part. And if he were to do it, I'd watch.

Welling gives a sh*t.

Tom Welling could easily jump on to the next CW mall fest, but I genuinely believe that he cares about playing Clark. And Clark is the most important facet of Superman. Not sure about bringing else from the show on, EXCEPT for Erica Durance. She gets what Lois is all about. My 2cents.

Tom Welling could easily jump on to the next CW mall fest, but I genuinely believe that he cares about playing Clark. And Clark is the most important facet of Superman. Not sure about bringing else from the show on, EXCEPT for Erica Durance. She gets what Lois is all about. My 2cents.

Well I became a fan of Smallville in Season 2 especially when Reeve appeared and they played the music. Say what you like about Supes but the movie theme is the best super hero theme EVER, nothing comes close. I also like Save Me from Smallville.I loved what they did with Doomsday on the show and they didn't do him as cgi. I thought they were pretty faithful and that they aren't scared to do the proper Supes villains. It's more than just Lex or Zod so if they did a Smallville movie or another

It's more than just Lex or Zod so if they did a Smallville movie or another Superman movie I would like a badass baddie like Darkseid or at least someone he can have a fight with. I actually like Returns and the only thing I disliked was Bosworth as Lane. I think if they got a good bad guy in there and upped the action quotient there is potential for a good movie.

P.S I'm aware this is pretty badly written but I'm at work and typing fast, so sue me ;)

It is a fan boys wet dream, but it'll never happen. He'll never wear the costume, at times I wonder just how much Welling really appreciates his role...

Welling could work but...

Tom Welling could work as the new Superman, but I think that he would have to become Superman on "Smallville" first.

Don't even know where to start...

I am a big fan of anything and everything Superman! I have seen Smallville since the beginning and have to say it has definitely shown much more promise the past couple of seasons, but this show has fucked over the Superman mythos worse than the Salkinds. What happened to the fandom battle-cry of sticking to the origin material?! Now if they can bring Welling and Durance ONLY AND leave behind the Smallville Elseworld...maybe.

Absolutely not! I despised everything related to Smallville, and couldn't stand it's interpretation of the characters. Keep Smallville as far away from the next Superman film as possible!

I've always thought that 'Smallville' was the most underachieving show I've ever seen: it could have been Really Great, but its producers never seem to aim higher than Just Okay.

That said, I've always liked Welling in the role (and I'd rather see him in a movie than Brandon Routh's Christopher Reeve impersonation again).

I'm with you 100%.Welling has been Superman for the past 10 years now.Every generation has a Superman.Mine was Reeve and this generation is Tom Welling. So he should play Superman in next BIG screen version.

100% YES!

I was saying this when they were casting Superman Returns...

Welling IS Clark Kent/ Superman. and no one can top how good he is at both roles

and considering im not a big fan of the show anymore and still think that, says alot
