C'MON HOLLYWOOD: Award Show drama is getting out of control!

...Award Show drama is getting out of control!
by J.A. Hamilton

Iíve never really understood the crazy fascination with Award Shows and how overly dramatic they seem to get. I applaud the idea of rewarding actors, actresses, writers, producers and directors with praise, party and drink (as after all thatís what these shows are; one big party) and an excuse to get all dressed up, mingle with your peers and be seen. I say bring it on and let the good times roll, but year after year there are more than a few bad apples that go out of their way to make complete asses of themselves, embarrassing them, their hosts and everyone in attendance. Iím not naive enough to think nothing is said to them, but I think we need to tighten the reigns a bit.

He totally should've backhanded her with that statue.

First and foremost I think those in attendance need to calm down, take a deep breath and come to terms with one of the biggest facts of all: itís just an award, a useless statue in most cases thatíll end up in a corner with a thick layer of dust on it. That said, itís an honour to be acknowledged for greatness but at the end of the day in this business (especially when it comes to actors and actresses) those awards donít mean much as far as their careers are concerned. Iíve never heard someone say, ďHell yeah, letís go see THAT movie because THAT actor or actress has three Oscars under his or her belt.Ē Now Iím sure there are exceptions to that rule when it comes to casting, especially when it comes to dramatic roles but again, I donít think having awards is as do or die as some might think.

"Turn off that damn music, I'm not finished yet!"

Now speaking of acting out in the spotlight, Iíve seen more than a few incidents and speeches that made me cringe (Sally Field gave an over-the-top Emmy speech back in 2007 that started to push the envelope a little too far by the end and sheís far from the only one) , but what I miss are the days when the worst thing we had to worry about was people being a little too high or drunk (Chris Farley had a couple of those moments but I thought they were hilarious). You canít go wrong with humour in theory, but then again, Ben Stillerís whole AVATAR/Navi speech was just as horrible as his Joaquin Phoenix speech. Sacha Baron Cohen was supposed to take part in the Navi skit but thank God he pulled out of it.

"Dammit bitch, I said gimme that microphone!"

Now as far as jokes or speeches (in poor taste or otherwise) go, thatís one end of things but what makes matters worse are when people try to outright screw, embarrass or attack people. The Kanye thing doesnít directly apply here, but itís become a precedent (not the oldest one but the most recent) used to depict this unruly behaviour. The AVATAR/HURT LOCKER debacle quickly got out of hand with unsavoury comments and even attempts to sabotage the voting ballets. And after Kanye, youíd think theyíd be able to maintain proper control over people just randomly jumping up on stage and throwing their two cents into other peopleís speeches but I guess not.

"Umm, why aren't any of you laughing?"

My favourite Award Shows are still the MTV Movie Awards and of the course The Scream Awards. The first one always makes me laugh, and call me crazy but Iíll take humour over drama any day of the week and Iím always up for seeing Horror get its due. Iím not saying I agree with all the decisions and votes that take place at Award Shows, thatís another story, but what Iíd like to see is proper control here. Outbursts like those mentioned and not mentioned should be met with strict discipline if for no other reason than to let everyone involved breathe a sigh of relief instead of being on edge all night wondering when the shit will hit the fan. There will always be bad apples, and some drama canít be helped, but stricter rules are certainly in order.
Extra Tidbit: I wonder how many of these ďsituationsĒ are pre-planned with a reverse psychology approach in hopes of getting people to watch these shows expecting and or wanting to see drama?

Seeing it stop is a nice thought, but if security hasn't cracked down on it by now they probably never will.

Yeah, not only are people getting more and more rude every year, people's integrity is all but gone. These are hardly award worthy shows anymore.

I read this article thirty five times on different websites already in the last year, so this wasn't anything new or groundbreaking. C'Mon Hamilton!

Ahh, come on don't be so harsh, I'm sure there's lots of people who haven't read this type of article, besides I doubt there's something new and exciting to get mad at every week.

I'm surprised people still watch these award shows considering you can catch all the highlights on YouTube and all the winners on MSN.

Award shows have never really been intersting, but you're right when it comes to fun the MTV movie awards are where it's at. I've never watched the Scream Awards but I want to.

Ummmm

You guys do know that the big awards are rigged right? It's not actually about who earned it, but who bought it. That is a fact. Especially for the Oscars. Ask anyone in the industry.

As far as the Kanye shenanigans go, I think we'll see it stop when someone gets their ass handed to them by security, or when people stop giving a damn. It's like a streaker at a sports game, as long as you keep airing the footage and giving them publicity, they'll keep doing it.

Ummm, if you could just buy the award, I'm pretty sure James Cameron has the cash so if that were true he'd have won for AVATAR.

I'd have paid big money to see Kanye get his ass handed to him by security.

"Ask anyone in the industry."

I'm sure you have plenty of times with all of your ties to big celebrities and producers, right?

Funny stuff, but not the good funny. It's downright ridiculous how these award shows play out now. If the ratings are still high, it's no doubt for all the wrong reasons.

confused:

If awards shows are no big deal then what's the problem with a moron creating a scene now and then? If mic's were yanked the minute anything went stupid, it would feel a lot less fun, imo. At any rate, I don't think awards show "drama" has reached any epidemic preportion. The perpetrators get all the backlash they deserve for mis-appropriating the spot-light.

Why the hell do people who get paid massive amounts of money to stand in front of a camera for a living need an award anyway. I mean how much fucking praise do you need for being an actor. You didn't cure cancer here. They kiss their asses on the red carpet before, then they get an award then the whole room gives them a standing ovation kissing their asses even more, then afterwards they talk to the press where everyone kisses their ass some more. Police and firefighters make 5 figure

Police and firefighters make 5 figure salaries per year, you make 7 figures per movie, and you still need an award?? So ridiculous.

The director (guy) was giving an acceptance speech for Best Short Doc I think when the producer (lady) interuppted him:

I actually thought Ben's Avatar bit was quite funny

I think in general the Oscar does actually boost someone's career, at least for the next few years or so. I do agree with the rant in that all the 'drama' needs to stop, both Kanye incidents were ridiculous and some of the speeches are even more cringeworthy.

Good read

I believe it was Sally Fields who had that infamous, "You like me! You really like me speech as well."

She really shouldn't be allowed to recieve awards anymore.
