C'MON HOLLYWOOD: Possible Resident Evil sequel options!

...possible Resident Evil sequel options!
by J.A. Hamilton

Ive been an avid fan of the RE games since the first one helped launch the original Playstation and had an absolute blast with RE 5 on the Playstation 3. I was overjoyed at the news of a RESIDENT EVIL film and though I did enjoy the first one I couldnt help but wonder why they strayed so far from what the game truly is, ending up with something that was not a whole hell of a lot different from your average zombie flick. They did learn their lesson quick though and decided to be a bit more faithful with the second installment but the third really went way off the beaten path. RE: AFTERLIFE landed somewhere in the middle but still managed to be a decent action flick (BEWARE of spoilers ahead if have yet to watch RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE). Now, Mr. and Mrs. Paul W.S. Anderson are apparently looking for ideas (on Twitter mind you but I dont Twitter) so heres hoping they consider some of mine.

This guy was totally badass.

My biggest problem with this series is Alice. I love you Milla dont get me wrong but I dont understand why you guys decided to create a new female character and forsake the ones already there in front of you. Add to that, too much time is spent over the course of these films developing Alice and her arsenal of (sometimes cool, sometimes ridiculous) abilities when you should have been diving head long into the Umbrella Corporation, the T-Virus and the many other strains and developments that made the games so intriguing. You guys made Alice damn near invincible and thats not what RE is about. The theme has always been survival horror (death on a stick around every turn) but at no point in this series have I ever felt worried about Alice. Hell, even in this latest film with her powers gone (a smart move by the way) shes still kicking ass and taking names without so much as breaking a sweat.

Alice is insanely hot but too overpowered.

Visually these films continue to impress me, you are without a doubt a wizard behind the camera Mr. Anderson (loved the 3-D effects, especially all the ones involving water and the rain drops cascading off the actor names in the opening credits was a nice touch). Youve also managed to keep enough gore and violence locked in to appease the mob, which is also nice. Ill be honest, you had me back in RE 1 at the end when James Purefoy is turned and edging his way toward Alice after she goes for the briefcase, that scene was pure gold. These films get slicker and slicker as they go and theres always a wink here and there to the games like the mansion and statues from the first film and the crows popping up from time to time (by far one of the coolest things about the third film) but wheres the depth and mystery? Wheres that extra push to make these films stand above the rest in this oversaturated sub-genre?

I'd have rathered Miller come on as Leon and get a meatier role.

Word around the campfire is this film was based loosely on RE 5 and therein sits one of the other problems I have with these flicks. Each film tries to steal a bit of lore or add a familiar name to the mix but with Alice as the lead it ends up being a moot point. Jill Valentine, Claire and Chris Redfield, even my main man Wesker are all here in the latest installment but whats the use as theyre underdeveloped fillers most of the time. Claire was useless in the third film and remains useless here. I loved seeing Wentworth Miller come aboard as Chris Redfield but other than a wink in PRISON BREAKs direction and a couple one liners he too becomes a fleeting memory. Albert Wesker is a big deal when it comes to the games, he was at ground zero and is a wavering presence over your shoulder at all times. The battles with him were (a little short) cool and all but to non-fans of the game he might come off as more of a Neo clone than anything else which is a shame because hes a superb villain.

This is definitely the direction the next film should take.

The Resident Evil films are a guilty pleasure for me and Ill love them no matter what path you ultimately chose. Id love to see Leon join the fray and personally would have rather seen Jill keep her identity concealed at the end of the latest film only to have it revealed at the beginning of the next one, say, in an epic fight with Alice. Alice should die in this opening battle (no offense Milla, seriously, but youre a great actress and you dont need this series anymore) paving the way for Leon to come on board. You should jump into the Uroboros or Progenitor virus and then tackle RE 4s setting (I cant see you guys using RE 5s setting) for a dive into new territory. The Axeman looked amazing as did the mutated dogs and tentacle zombies, you have a knack for creating wondrous creatures and environments so just imagine what you could do with a castle backdrop (you must have some ideas on the subject since you were attached to do Castlevania at one point). Im all for another installment and have nothing but faith, that said I hope you consider my humble opinions in hopes of tweaking the next one and going out with a bang.
Extra Tidbit: I sat through all the credits after RE: AFTERLIFE convinced thered be some sign of Wesker (I know he lived) but alas, he was nowhere to be found. Sigh.

Dogshit > Paul W S Anderson.

I agree, worst c'mon hollywood ever. The Resident evil movies have to be a contender for the worst movie franchise ever and if you are a true fan of the games how can you like these films as they shit all over the games! I've grown up on the games and these films offend me. I can't fucking believe Spiderman is getting rebooted because of one shit film, yet we've had 4 of these shit films and are they gonna reboot it, the only thing that would make resident evil movies worth watching, no it gets

Games to Movies

Sure, the movies aren't perfect but I'm pretty sure you can be a fan of both and keep your integrity in tact.

THE WORST

BY FAR the worst C'Mon Hollywood article I've seen. If you're truly a Resident Evil fan, then you can do nothing but DESPISE every single one of these movies. They are all bastardizations of the games, and are action movies with no horror at all.

Even that aside, the first one was a mediocre movie in its own right, and the rest are way bottom of the barrel.

No, Paul W.S. Anderson is not good behind the camera, at least not anymore. If you sped up all the slo-mo in Afterlife (a friend

Dude, I think your missing the point of this article which was to try and give Anderson and them at least a couple good ideas to run with as we're getting another sequel whether we like it or not. I do agree that the movies can't hold a candle to the games but when do they ever.

your not a fan

how can you be a fan of Resident Evil and like these shitty excuses for B-movie action? The original games were about HORROR, being alone, limited ammo, limited life, limited contact. The movies turned them into ninja kicking dogs, shitty slow mo, crummy effects, I can go on and on. These movies do the game NO justice, and are fucking horrible. Sure the 5th Resident Evil went for a more action route for the games, but I don't want Hollywood doing anymore, because they CAN'T do video game

I've enjoyed all the Resident Evil films other than the second one which was pretty poor, even though they only essentially pay lip service to the games. Don't think we need a reboot, though a change of main character couldn't hurt, but there's plenty of Zombie movies out there that are more like the Resident Evil games than this series has been. If you look at the mid-ground between the games and the movies, you get the fairly unsatisfying CG movie (sequel soon, apparently). I consider these

I like this series, for as silly as it is. I do agree though, that taking focus away from Alice could be very refreshing.

I read the Wesker Report, and you can make a whole trilogy about that, about Umbrella and the T-virus origins. And for the direction, Matt Reeves, what he did with Let me in is just wonderful. But it has to be a reboot!! It's a decade of this movies that have no relation with the quality of the true resident evil history.

Sequels or reboots, they're not the greatest options but I do agree that Alice should be on her way out to make room for Leon and/or other characters to have the next one actually feel like and RE film.

Please, No More Sequels

If anything, I'm down for a reboot like The Pin has suggested. As a fan of the games, I was extremely disappointed with the first film and didn't even bother to watch the others. Also, name the reboot Biohazard.

Enjoyed the series. Didn't care too much for the second or third films, but as a whole, they were fun. However, we should really end the series at four. No more films are needed, nor are any wanted really. I mean, perhaps they could reboot things and stick closer to the games, but is anyone even interested still? I like Afterlife, but if the series continues, I'll care about the new films as much as I care about the ongoing SAW films. More are just unecessary and for the most part (judging by

That may seem hypocritical considering the way I feel about other ongoing series, but still, this is one series I can live with resting in peace.

I loved the first movie.. and I enjoyed parts of the second and third.. but it's really gotten out of control with the outrageous martial arts/gun fights. I'd love a reboot to this franchise but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. If they can do away with Milla's insane arsenal of super powers, tone her down a bit and establish some better characters; I'm 100% game.

Hell.. if it's anything like Resident Evil 4 (the game) I'd wait in line right now.

For once I want a reboot

Seriously. Start it over from the first game. The mansion with Chris and the stars and go from there. The first game would be a great story I don't know why they didn't do that in the first place. Then you could jump from there to number 2 which is still my favorite in the series. Skip number 3 because we've already seen Nemesis and go straight for 4. I just can't believe they haven't been able to make a GOOD RE movie, its maddening. Don't get me wrong I've enjoyed these movies but not in the

The RE movies have always and will always be mindless entertainment and it's really pointless to expect or consider them otherwise. Sequel hopes? Well, you covered it pretty good with Alice fighting Jill and then taking a dirt nap so Leon can come in. And yeah, the RE 4 setting would be perfect to see on the big screen.

I actually enjoy the movie series and I've been a diehard fan of the games since 1997. The latest installment may be the best IMO and I loved seeing Wesker fighting Chris and Claire. The next film NEEDS Leon (and possibly Ada). I'm also expecting an epic showdown with Jill.

One of my biggest problems with these movies has always been Alice too, I mean for a series based upon games that juggle their main characters you'd think that Alice would be a character that's gone as far as she can go. Time for some new blood, bring in Leon.

This has become a difficult series to defend lately but I do enjoy these movies. If they're looking for ideas, I'm all for Leon and new surroundings but kinda doubt it'll happen that way because I don't think they'll kill Alice off.

I'm not exactly pumped about another sequel but starting from scratch would be the best bet at this point. Alice does need to die already, she's been out of control since part 3.

The films are silly..

Milla isn't a bad actress but these films are R-rated chidlrens movies. Sony wanted an action flick, unfortunately they do not care that Resident Evil needs to be a horror movie. So they basically are getting the horror fans by the title and the action fans by the trailers. It is really sad to see what could've been our generations Night of the Living Dead series squandered into generic action flicks with goofy wire work and bad effects.
Sony just made Resident Evil into whatever was popular

Sony just made Resident Evil into whatever was popular in 2002. And the result is nothing special and these will all be forgotten.

If another film must be made then how about starting from scratch and actually make a ZOMBIE movie and not a shitty action movie with zombies as a back drop....

A bad director took a bad actress who happened to be his wife and bought the rights to a great game, used the name recognition to build his own series and rely on the gullibility of horror fans, and fetishize paper thin actress and stick thin woman with no talents. Why is that so hard to understand?

And I'm shocked people continue to make exceptions for these pieces of shit. They have nothing to offer in the way of scares, action, originality, or appeal. It's brand name exploitation and
