Colin Trevorrow promises "deeply satisfying" answer to your Rey theories

01.12.2016

If you've yet to have seen STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, consider the following to contain spoilers, albeit minor ones. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS answered a few questions regardling the parentage of certain characters, but others were left a mystery, including just who Rey's (Daisy Ridley) mysterious yet long-absent parents are. Plenty of theories have been making the rounds since the film was released and STAR WARS: EPISODE IX director Colin Trevorrow spoke to Entertainment Tonight recently to promise that the big reveal won't be disappointing.

We're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying. Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We'll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we're just telling you what happened.

Although Trevorrow has been "working closely" with STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII director Rian Johnson, his comment seems to indicate that we may not get a concrete answer about Rey's parentage until the final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. My bet is that she's the illegitimate love-child of Jar Jar Binks and Mara Jade. The new characters of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS are undoubtedly the stars of this new trilogy, but you won't have to worry about the original Star Wars stars being left in the dust as Colin Trevorrow said that he wants their presence to be even greater in his film.

They are icons, but they're also people that have suffered tremendous loss and challenge over the course of all these films, [Episode IX] is something that needs to honor a story that's been told over a period of 40 years, I don't want to ignore any of it, and I respect all of it. It's something I think the fan base is going to embrace.

STAR WARS: EPISODE IX will hit theaters on May 24, 2019.

Who do you think Rey's parents are?

I swear people don't pay attention to movies. Several times they showed Chewie's bowcaster blowing people up sending them literally flying in the air. Although Kylo is able to deflect some of the blast with the force he still gets hit, causing a significant amount of damage. They even show his blood dripping into the snow to again remind the audience he just took a major injury. Yes, he's able to defeat Finn who's not a Jedi (still awesome he got a hit in though), but it's a different matchup

Yes, he's able to defeat Finn who's not a Jedi (still awesome he got a hit in though), but it's a different matchup when fighting Rey. Although she retreats most of the time when initially fighting him (which is to be expected), she eventually taps into the Force to finally best a seriously wounded Kylo. Much like how Mace would tap into the dark side of the Force to defeat opponents, Rey used the light side. This is not a hard concept to understand, especially if you're a Star Wars fan. Also every Jedi isn't skilled equally. That's why there are master Jedi, grand master Jedi (only obtained by Luke), and regular Jedi. Just like there are Sith lords and apprentices. And while you'll have some Jedi who learn to use the Force at a steady or slow pace, there are those who are naturally gifted and will pick it up quicker. Hell, Anakin was using the Force at a very young age. There's nothing wrong with Rey being able to use the Force so quickly. To me it was a bit of fresh air to see them go that route.

I agree with all your points. The Force controls your actions.....if you let it. Rey was already a fighter (she used a bo staff), so she's not a complete novice. You see Kylo overwhelming her despite his injuries and him holding back because he wants to convince her to join him and Snoke. Then he tells her about using the Force and her eyes light up because she finally understands that everything she has been able to do naturally is because of her connection to the Force. Then she

Then she remember's Maz' words about closing her eyes and feeling it. She then closes her eyes, relaxes, then kicks Kylo's ass. Not because she's a great trained fighter, but because she has a natural ability to give herself to the Force so it can guide her actions.

It's exactly in line with everything the movies have ever told us about that mystical ability.

Yup that's right. Jedi use the Force to aid them when fighting. They let their actions be guided by the Force. Even with anyone who's ever played KOTOR, surely have heard the phrase, "the Force fights through me." I've been so shocked at how many times I've had to explain what I've said above to people.. even sometimes those who claim to be Star Wars fans.

It's possible...

That Rey was made from Lukes DNA. She is drawn to his saber and when she grabs it you can hear a young Obi Wan say " these are your first steps". I mention that because in A New Hope, Ben Kenobi told Luke basically the same thing, he said "Youve taken your first steps into a larger world". Also, her piloting skills match Lukes fairly well (and Anakins) when she is able to work the Millennial Falcon. Han looks at her because of the uncanny way she resembles Luke.

If you watch her facial expressions when she picks up the saber to fight Kylo, you sense a darker side in her as well as see it in her fighting. The reason she became so strong so quick is because she, at that moment, embraced her dark side just as Luke did. She also grew up in the same type of place as Luke (and Anakin) a desert type planet. Basically what I'm getting at, is she mirrors Luke in almost every way and she is very in tune with the Skywalker family. So I'd say it's possible.

I am sure Im on a different site. Or have people just started to switch on brain function when it comes to this film.
Having Rey really powerful from the outset makes no sense in Character development either. That scene where she mind controls the storm trooper, not only was another circumstantial plot device but it was awful, just awful. I think the writers were more tied up at this point.

That scene wasn't nearly as bad as you're claiming. All through the first 6 episodes, Jedi's have been shown using the force in their daily lives before anyone explained to them what they were doing. Rey didn't know she had that ability until Kylo showed it to her by trying to read her mind. In the process of resisting him, she accidentally read his, showing her that she had the ability. You guys act like using the Force is impossible if someone hasn't been trained first. There is no roadmap for how to use it. Someone had to figure out each one of the abilities in the first place (and may not have figured them all out).

Its just an excuse for lazy writing. Many directors have played homage to previous film entries by using signature shots and haven't got away with as much as JJ got away with in this movie. I suppose it was a great scene for the kids 'chuckles an all' , but when you relate it to the scene where Alec Guiness uses's it in a New Hope. It kinda takes away the power of it all. I believe Disney accidentally spoiled that surprise

in one of their games. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing the next chapter in the STAR WARS saga. There are a lot of great directions this story can go; hopefully Disney and crew can make this trilogy on par with the original.

That was already debunked. Kylo Ren actually said "Curses!" but the second word was triggered very close to the end of "Face me!"

I sit corrected. I had heard the information second-hand, so I hadn't heard that part of the story. Still, it would make a lot of sense if that familial relationship was the case.

They might decide to make another person the father. Just to "shake things up a bit". But in the end, it would be desperate red herrings that would make the writing and foreshadowing of the first movie even that much more ridiculous.

Her inexperience beating Kylo Ren ruined the whole movie, perhaps the series

I mean really. This skinny little girl who, before grabbing a light saber didn't even think the Jedi were real, all the sudden can beat this tall bad ass WITH experience...yea ok. And don't give me that shit, "well she's naturally more powerful." BULLSHIT. Even with heavy training by a TWO master Jedi's (Obi and Yoda), Luke was still inexperienced by the end of the Empire Strikes Back. So apparently Kylo Ren will become more powerful, but so what? If they already have this skinny

If they already have this skinny little bitch pegged as all powerful, I don't care for the rest of the series. My hope was that Luke would come in at the end, but instead we get her, and now MORE females in part 8. No thanks. I hope she isn't the ultimate focus of the next two, but we all know that this is SJWars now, not Star Wars.

I don't mind more female characters. But I do mind Kylo killing Han then getting beaten by Rey.
When Vader killed Ben that was ok because Vader was basically undefeated in the galaxy and younger etc and Ben let Vader win anyway. It just worked.
First off Finn picks up a lightsaber and turns it on incorrectly (it's supposed to be Luke's right) and actually is able to use it. I guess the empire or first order give Jedi weapons training to their ground troops because Finn can use it pretty

She should've barely escaped by using the force and Kylo wouldn't have seen it coming etc.

I don't see how Kylo Ren has any justification for being considered "a badass". In fact, the first time Ren and one of the leading officers meets that alien dude hologram, you can see the guy looking at Ren like "WTH is he doing here?" That alone says two things: Ren is there only because the hologram wants him in a place of authority. The second point is that Ren isn't skilled in the Dark Side; he just embraced it enough to show others with no experiece that he can use it. Other people around

Other people around Ren's area don't even know HOW to tap into the Force at all. This means that even the "weakest" Force user is considered "the strongest".
Also, don't forget that Rey took a lot of information from Kylo when he tried to search her thoughts. That means that her training was gleaned from what she learned from HIS memories, while being trained by Luke.
I'm not one to defend this movie (you'll see that based on my 6/10 review), but in this case, I find Rey's ability to defeat Kylo Ren one of the easiest answers to many questions this movie poses.

You have a villain, gut shot by a weapon that had it's power clearly illustrated throughout the film, bleeding all over the snow fighting a character whose power, unknown to herself, was awakening during the battle. Not to mention it is entirely possible that Kylo could have beat her eventually if the planet had't split the ground between them. Is it a leap? Sure. Obviously one you weren't ready to take.

But if we're talking about not buying the suspension of disbelief in a fiction, how about semi non-fiction?

How many based-on-a-true-story sports underdog films where the downtrodden main character closes his eyes to dig down deep to find it within himself to make the touchdown pass, or the three point shot, or whatever sportsbally thing is needed to win the game? Answer; All of them.

Or in other adventure style flicks?

How about good ole Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade where a non religious man is able to summon the faith necessary to complete the trials, just by closing his eyes and digging deep.

Or Luke himself closing his eyes and pulling the Force out of his ass, with no training, to shoot a tiny vent shaft and destroy the Death Star in the OG Star Wars.

You may not buy it, and by your SJW remark I imagine you never will, but, this character path has cinematic precedent and the only thing different than any other examples out there is her gender.

I guess you missed Kylo Ren taking a direct hit from Chewbacca's bowcaster right after killing Han Solo. That probably slowed Kylo down more than a little.

I pretty much loath the SJW community, but if you think The Force Awakens had too many women characters and they ruined the movie for you, friend, you have a serious problem. Must be hard to simply exist if you hate women that much.

I have a feeling Snoke will be the one responsible for Anakin's conception that created the line of Skywalkers and the trilogy will end with him being destroyed by his own creations when Kylo turns light and destroys him. I also believe Rey will have a connection to Obi Wan Kenobi considering it's Obi Wan speaking to her when she touches the light saber. Not sure what that connection is though.

I want Rey to go to the dark side in the next one. Then Kylo can go light and the last episode will be an all-out insane battle of good and evil.....not of the characters, but the concept of evil corrupting good people. That's the way to make Snoke truly terrifying. He can corrupt anyone.

It may be obvious, but who cares?

Rey needs to be Luke's daughter. She's an excellent pilot, natural in her abilities of the force, and grew up on a desert planet like both her father and grandfather. The revelation of Luke being her father would just be the tip of the iceberg. It would be awesome if we discovered Ren is the one who left her on Jakku. It would have been his last good deed before he led the attack on Luke's Jedi temple and didn't want to kill his cousin in the process. Luke felt that he failed as both a father

The Jedi records foretold this to Luke who then reasoned that she must be taken and hidden somewhere safe and as far away from him as possible to prevent Snoke from getting to her. The seduction of Ben Solo by Snoke may have been for that purpose alone. Snoke doesn't really need Ben at all, he's just using him to get to Luke and eventually to Rey. It was by chance that Kylo Ren met her before knowing her importance, as her powers had just started to kick in under extreme circumstances. This would answer how she immediately know mind reading and lightsaber fighting without prior training. She is Kylo Ren's polar opposite, with him as a knockoff of his grandfather's dark side and her as the actual reincarnation of Anakin's light side.

Plot guessing is fun!

I had the same idea, but with an additional element. There were certain indications that Kylo Ren cared for Rey; he seems to behave slightly differently when speaking with her and even takes off his mask during her interrogation scene. Just watch his body language in that scene. It's far more relaxed. So my thought is that Rey's presence would amplify his draw to the light side, but as Kylo Ren transitions to the light, Rey feels pulled in by the dark side. There was also a scene where Han

There was also a scene where Han tells Kylo that Snoke is just using him and will abandon him someday, so I see that as a turning point. As Kylo becomes more drawn by the light, Snoke begins to see Rey as a greater threat and rejects Kylo, leading to Rey joining him and Kylo motivated to fight against Snoke, while still caring for Rey and (knowing Snoke's betrayal) on a mission to save her.

Thanks IHRTNJ, I am (not professionally).

Dreamer, that's really deep. It would be awesome to see that level of thinking put into these movies. It's difficult to do without too much exposition, but if they could pull it off that would be brilliant. I think it's obvious that Rey is stronger with the Force, so Snoke would be desperate to recruit her. That's a great opportunity for Kylo to see the error of his ways (especially if a now-evil Rey goes on a murder spree). He then goes back
