Comic book rumor mill: Justice League villain revealed?

Dec. 3, 2012by:

Justice League everyone looking right

SPOILERS of course.

There's going to be speculation and unknowns about JUSTICE LEAGUE leading all the way up until the day of its release in 2015, so we might as well start in earnest now.

If today's rumor is true, DC is going to be pulling more of an AVENGERS 2 than an AVENGERS 1 by bringing in the biggest baddie they can to endanger Earth and bring the likes of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, the Flash, and more together.  And that baddie is...

Rainbow Creature!

Rainbow Creature comp

And by "Rainbow Creature," I actually more mean someone who would, if he were real, in all probability obliterate me for daring to make such a joke:

Darkseid!

While primarily an antagonist of Superman first introduced back in 1970, he has gone up against the Justice League and its individual members many times over.  One of the New Gods who hails from the planet Apokolips, Darkseid is an almost-fascistic leader whose main superpower lies in the Omega Beam - energy that he can fire from his eyes and hands that will either stun or disintegrate his foes altogether (or even return them to life).  Beyond even that, as though it weren't enough, Darkseid can also teleport through both space and time, use a power called The Omega Sanction to trap victims in terrifying alternate realities, fly, and possess/manipulate others using both superpowers and the calculations of his vast and expansive intellect.  Not to mention how he's immortal and has already lived for hundreds of thousands of years.

So if this rumor proves to be true, it appears that DC has decided to go balls to the wall and guns blazing on the Justice League's big-screen debut.  Not only are they introducing an entire case of super-powered heroes without any lead-up films to establish them in the general movie-going public's eyes as characters they should care about, but the villain is one whose powers (at least initially) appear to trump anything that can be thrown at them.

Never let it be said that DC didn't try, right?

Think they can do it?

Rainbow Creature? For real? I never know the character but I think it's just silly. I'd rather see Justice League tackles Darkseid or Doomsday.

Hehe, shame on me. Need a stronger cup of coffee. My bad. But yeah, either Darkseid or Doomsday would be nice.

Darkseid's a solid choice - about as badass as they come in the DC Universe(es). Seeing as Marvel's Thanos is kind of a Darkseid ripoff, it'll be interesting to see who pulls it off better - Justice League or Avengers II.
One shouldn't underestimate Darkseid's influence on cinema already, either. Kirby's New Gods comics were a significant influence on George Lucas when creating Darth Vader and the Force for the original Star Wars. Regardless if they can do justice to Darkseid, it'll be

Well...Here Is The Problem...

I'm really looking forward to a JLA movie, don't get me wrong. However, now that Avengers has kicked the proverbial superhero butt and introduced Thanos, I'm not sure that Darkseid is the way to go now. Granted he is a great villain with enough power to take on the whole Justice League and I'd love to see him on screen. But, I'm afraid that the folks that aren't in the know will be confused by two big, rocky faced villains. It's kind of like overkill. Darkseid has a lot of extra history

BTW, WW without pants. Traditional costume.

Check out Batman/Superman: Supergirl. Here is the Amazon link where you an pick it up for $4 or check your local comic shop. In it, Batman and Co take on Darkseid and beat him. The Batman portion is logical and realistic and it is Batman that actually defeats Darkseid on Akroplois. It's a fun read.

I would love to see Darkseid depicted on the big screen, but as he's basically DC's equivalent of Thanos in most respects (as mentioned earlier by darkstrEam and Otis_Driftwood), it may draw comparisons to the Avengers sequel. However, I would love to see Apokolips realised in live-action, and for perhaps some of the New Gods to turn up as well should Darkseid be the primary villain for the film.

Wow...Just...wow

I don't see this as being good at all. Not the Darkseid but the lead up with to character building. Most of the time, this fails and I think it will only show moderate success.

This is great news! If your gonna bring the JLA together then you have to bring the ultimate baddie, yes it may look like a similar film when Avengers 2 comes out but when hasn't there been a year where two very similar films come out and people still go see em both. Am I a little mad there weren't more set up films for their characters? Yes, but my ass is still going to go see JLA whether its good or bad. Bring on the New God!

Meh... DC is rich with villains. If they're looking at a different route than Nolan's Batman, then The Joker can also come back into play. With Lex Luthor. And Doomsday if they want to go down the "Big Bad" route. All big name Villains that even the occasional/non comic fan would know.

Should they do it like Smallville and have him be more of a phantom-like creature that has to possess a host-body?

No for 2 reasons- Darkseid was already done like that in Smallville, and when they didn't show Galactus the way he was meant to be seen in FF2, it was a major cop-out.

Desperate much?

Meh. DC are trying too hard. They couldn't put together a good story like Marvel did and are now trying to sell the JLA movie by bringing out the baddest guy in the book. What they don't understand is that watching our favorite superheroes fight an uber-villain may be cool, but watching our favorite superheroes whom we have grown accustomed to on screen as individuals finally teaming up together to form an ensemble unlike anything Earth has ever seen AND THEN fighting an uber-villain is a

Marvel did the latter, thus Marvel has already won.

Still with this stupid idea????

Warners and DC can't get more then one comics character going at a time and now they want to do a team film?

Warners and DC need to walk away from this stupid idea and make some individual character films and then maybe try a team film.

Instead they are going to waste 200 million dollars to make some piece of crap.

Didn't they learn from Green Lantern?

Quit introducing the biggest villain so soon! I would love to see Darkseid just as much as the next guy, but the only way this would work well is if Darkseid appears in Man of Steel or sooner than the JL movie. Introducing his character and story in addition to at least 5 new superheroes in the same film will cause a cluster fuck on top of another cluster fuck.

Not to mention, having him battle the Justice League the same year the Avengers will be taking on Thanos will only confuse

Even though it could be argued that Thanos is a rip off of Darksied, many non-comic readers might think WB is completely ripping off the Avengers. Don't fuck this up WB!

Let's start "small". Luthor along with Brainiac and Metallo or Doomsday. Would love for Black Adam or Killer Croc to show up. Sequel can deal with Darkseid, Joker, Sinestro etc. Luthor for prez in sequel.

I think Doomsday is another villain they can unleash on the JLA that is a worthy opponent. There's other ones they can do also like Luthor/Braniac and the Anti-Monitor if they really wanted to go crazy. They could also do the Identity story, probably the best JLA story I have read, where a serial killer goes around murdering the wives and loved ones of the JLA members.

Call me crazy, but...

Can someone explain to me how Batman would contribute to fighting this Darkseid fellow? Is the team just keeping Batman around because they feel sorry for him?
Also... Apokolips? Really? Is this the planet of bad spelling?

Perhaps the comic reading nerds could come down from their mountaintop and enlighten those of us who simply view Batman as a human, as to how this human (albeit rich, smart and trained, but still human) is going to contribute to fighting an interstellar threat. I had enough trouble swallowing Captain America as being anything but useless in the Avengers. How is this different?

Always wanted to see Darkseid in a Movie

His army on Apokolips would be a pretty devastating force. I really don't think DC has their shit together, which has me scared. They have seemingly two different Batmans in the works and a Wonder Woman TV show that will have nothing to do with the movie. Green Lantern should have been good but once again they didnt know what direction to go in which left it a terribly toned cluster fuck. Man of Steel is the one bright spot, it keeps sounding better and better. I don't know how you can do all

Idk, not looking good.

Well, at least Smallville had a cheap finale beating down Darkseid and sending Apokolips back to...where ever, but this idea for a JLA movie is horrible. Hell, they are better off just redoing the JLA cartoon series pilot than going balls to the walls with a being so powerfull..

Darkseid is a great villain for the Justice League to battle. A real threat. I just question how it fits in with the DC heroes like Bats. They will need a good script for it to work.

Oh god....

This is deflection, nothing more. Darkseid is an awesome villian, but the #1 issue to resolve in this production is not the villain. Its the most popular character of the Justice League, Batman. Until that gets resolved in a way that gets the fan base on board, which I think is just flat out impossible, then nothing about this movie is going to move me but to wonder, "why the fuck are you doing this?"

And the ONLY way I contend this works is if you get Bale on board, which due to TDKR, is
