Fast Five composer Brian Tyler to score Marvel's Iron Man 3

Oct. 12, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Composer Brian Tyler has been tapped to compose the score for Marvel's upcoming IRON MAN 3, taking the reins from John Debney on IRON MAN 2, and Ramin Djawadi on IRON MAN.  Tyler is an accomplished composer, having worked non-stop on a number of high-profile projects.

Brian Tyler is a composer of over 50 films and was recently nominated for "Film Composer of the Year" by the International Film Music Critics Association. He composed and conducted the scores for "Eagle Eye“ for producer Steven Spielberg, the box office hit “Fast and Furious,” "The Expendables" and "Rambo" directed by Sylvester Stallone, "Law Abiding Citizen" starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, the Keanu Reeves thriller “Constantine,” the epic science fiction film "Battle Los Angeles," "Fast Five,” and the best selling video game of all time “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.”  He also wrote the music for Steven Spielberg’s new 20th-Century Fox series “Terra Nova.”

Watch the man work:

As a big fan of film scores I'm totally cool with Tyler doing the score for IRON MAN 3.  Djawadi's score for the first film grew on me and Debney's score for the second really built off of that and I think Tyler will add a tremendous energy to the film.  Choosing Tyler tells me that director Shane Black is looking for someone who can deliver on theme and action, which gets me even more pumped for the movie.  You don't hire Brian Tyler to score your cute little comedy.  You hire him when you want blood pumping through veins.

Click here to hear some samples of his various scores.

Marvel's IRON MAN 3, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, James Badge Dale, Rebecca Hall, Guy Pearce, and William Sadler is slated to hit theaters on May 3, 2013.

Be sure to check back here on October 23, 2012, when the first trailer for IRON MAN 3 is set to premiere!

Extra Tidbit: For the film score Schmoes; what's your favorite Brian Tyler score? Strangely, two of my favorite are for Battle Los Angeles and Bangkok Dangerous. Yep, you heard me right.

As far as my favorite scores go...

Battle: LA is probably his best, though frankly the movie isn't up to par. I like his work on the F&F movies. One of my favorite pieces is the opening sequence to Fast Four with the tanker truck. Another one of my favorite musical moments is in Fast Five when the Rock says "I'm in" to Vin, with the accompanying music just letting you know that it's on.

Tyler isn't bad, but all his scores start to sound the same recently. It's a shame Marvel doesn't care about thematic continuity in these films. I love seeing how themes progress over a series, like with Elfman's work on Spider-man or Zimmer's with the Dark Knight Trilogy. I also wish the marvel films had better themes for the villains. Iron Man 2 has the best villain music, I like what Debney did for Ivan.

I reeeeally hope the theme from Thor comes back in Thor: The Dark World, it's the best theme out of the entire MCU.

Get it right!

Ramin Djawadi's score for the 1st Iron Man was spot on. While not the best score in the MCU, it definitely did justice to the 2nd best Marvel movie so far. Iron Man 2's score was just a mess. I don't think it had anything original in it, as it was filled with ACDC (granted, not really a bad thing) and Black Sabbath, etc. Let's hope they can get it right with the 3rd movie, and finally have a score worthy of a good movie

Not gonna lie, I was kind of hoping it was gonna be John Ottman, seing as how he scored Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for Shane Black. Tyler is a good composer though, and hopefully we'll get something memorable.

That is one of my biggest complaints (and one of my only) of the Iron Man films. LACK of good scoring. Not sure if Tyler can deliver that.

Iron Man has yet to have a real theme, though.

Ramin Djawadi's score was alright, but there was no theme for Iron Man that he was able to give. John Debney's score was thoroughly forgettable, and once again, without a theme. The only composer to give anyone a theme in the MCU was Alan Silvestri with both Captain America and The Avengers. The rest of the scores of those films were nothing to write home about, but he did give those movies a theme. I do like Brian Tyler, though, so hopefully he succeeds where the others have failed. And I vote

If you listen to the track "Driving With The Top Down" from Iron Man I, that was the closest thing that score had to a recurring theme. I liked Craig Armstrong's work on The Incredible Hulk, specifically the opening titles. But you're right about Silvestri's work on The Avengers. His score gave me goosebumps, so I'd honestly not want to see him replaced on Avengers 2.

Alan Silvestri had a good theme for Avengers, i.e. the revolving shot of the Avengers together. Everything else though was serviceable to forgettable. I'd like if they retained the theme but bring on Tyler. It happens frequently that original composers are credited for the original theme which are retained whilst new composers do the remaining score.

SIlvestri has long been one of my faves, and I really liked the theme for Captain America that was grand, patriotic and unabashedly old-school, yet didn't sound like a parody and actually sounded pretty badass. He gave The Avengers a great theme too. I think you have a valid point here; the Marvel films need themes and leitmotifs for us to associate the characters with. Also agree with Longbaugh on Craig Armstrong's very cool opening titles for 'The Incredible Hulk'.

I believe this is one thing Marvel almost always messes up. I can't recall many of the scores or composers worth a damn.

I was just thinking of how Iron Man would feel like with that Battle: LA theme.
