CON: Batman 3 in 2011?

07.24.2009
UPDATE: Well, that didn't take long. Seems Oldman might've spoken too soon, and is already back-tracking somewhat. AICN just sat down with the man, and now he's saying "...well, I'm sure they want to do another one... it might 2 or 3 years." You'd think someone at WB would have given him a "lesson" about how COMIC CON works. Oh well...

Hey everyone, just a quick update from San Diego! During the Warner Brothers panel, Gary Oldman came on stage to talk about THE BOOK OF ELI (check out its trailer HERE) alongside Denzel Washington. People love those guys like crazy here, so all the questions were aimed at those two.

One person asked the obvious question: when's the next BATMAN movie? And Gary replied: "We start shooting next year. You didn't hear that from me." And there you have it! From Oldman himself, the next BATMAN movie, if started next year, should be out in 2011!

To scoop the whole Warner Bros. panel, including what we saw from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE BOX, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST., and JONAH HEX, head THIS WAY, and stick around for more updates from the Con as we hear it!

Extra Tidbit: Who just blew a gasket at the idea of another BATMAN movie in 2 years? I know I did!

@ brechtsky:
Actually it's not a pathetic reason to not wanna' make a third because of the fear of it not doing as well as TDK. The Nolans have always focused on story. They wouldn't care (as directors) if Batman 3 didn't make as much bank. They WOULD care, though, if it became "the odd sheep" of the lot. Remember, Harry Potter has a start, middle, and finish already put in place for it. So when you make Harry 1, you gotta' end it with Deathly Hallows. Batman, on the other hand, has an

Remember, Harry Potter has a start, middle, and finish already put in place for it. So when you make Harry 1, you gotta' end it with Deathly Hallows. Batman, on the other hand, has an uncountable amount of story archs to choose from (like you mentioned) and that makes it okay for Nolan NOT to make another.

Also remember that Chris Nolan has "Nolanized" the Batman franchise. While he could simply pick ANY story arch from the books and refill his pockets, he won't because Mr.Freeze or Man-Bat or Clayface wouldn't fit in Nolan's world unless he found a way to ground them to reality. He even goes as far as saying that The Penguin doesn't fit in this universe and Penguin's one of the most normal characters out there compared to the rest.

So if you ask me, Nolan could just stop right here if he wanted to. He has every right to. If he doesn't really feel like telling another Batman story or thinks that bringing in ANY new villain might jeopardize the tone he's created, he'll probably never make another Batman flick.

There's no good reason...

... For the Nolans to skip this one ... there is a WEALTH of source material and characters yet to appear, many of whom have rich, fully fleshed backstories and motivations-- so NO, there is no legitimacy to the statement, "IF they've got another story to tell" ... the only reason not to do it is they don't WANT to, or they're afraid it wont be as much of a success, which is about as pathetic a reason as I can imagine
... Thats like if warners stopped making harry potters after the first one

The Riddler

Anyone else think that Jason Isaacs would make an awesome Riddler?

AWESOME NONETHELESS.

Yeah Warner probably called him and gave him a word or two (according to that update)...and I'm completely okay if Nolan wants to take 2-3 years to make the next. The man made us a movie that'll last 5 years if not another decade till they revamp the series again. He's probably wondering how to build the story "around" The Joker by tactfully avoiding having to recast him.

Oh, and to "gameslave" below. You seriously think Ledger's performance wasn't that good, dude? You're a first I think.

I'm not upset or whatever, it's just a very interesting and unique comment to make...seeing as Ledger did a awesome job at playing a psychopatic maniac with The Joker's true essence.

Nolan had stated he'd NEVER put Robin in this incarnation of the Batman mythos a long time ago.

nice!

Sounds awesome. I do hope they recast the joker (ledger's performance wasn't that incredible!!)

as for you pYjama: I would boycott the film is Depp was casted as the Joker. Thats a bad fucking idea. They need someone a little unknown but with tremendous talent to do it. Depp's involvement would fuck the movie up and turn into yet another whacky johnny depp movie instead of a decent Batman movie.

Hmm...seems fairly official to me. Between his "You didn't hear it from me" statement and now him back-tracking implies that he said something he probably shouldn't have.

Either way, it's still a couple of years down the road which is fine with me. The last time they took a break in between flicks we got THE DARK KNIGHT which proves that it's better to wait than bang one out right after the other.

I'm really happy to hear that Gary is still involved on any front. I absolutely love him. I pray Nolan will get back on board, if he has a story to tell that is.

Another Batman movie for the sake of it ? No thankx. But if the Nolan brothers can craft something worth it, Im in, even if it takes five more years to come to life.

Personally, Id like to see Bruce Wayne die at the end of it, that would be fucking epic in my mind.

Nah not really! From there they could go on with the franchise with different creative teams and actors without ruining what Nolan did.

Sheeeeeeit

Batman 3 will probably come out on December 20, 2012. So everyone can see it right before the Earth explodes.

I'm stoked

Nolan said he took Heaths death hard. Let's hope he can get passed it and get his creativeness going for the next installment. Don't try to do another Joker story, you can't. And knock it outta the park like the last one.

With the exception of the 18 minutes of free Avatar IMAX footage in August, this is THE best news at Comic-con. I can't wait to see another Batman movie!

I'm staying positive but until I hear an official statement from Warner Bros, I'm not getting my hopes up.

All I gotta say is, bring everyone back from the last one (except you know who), works 3 times as hard on this one than the last and dont commit to anything unless it is on a grand EPIC freaking awesome scale. Period.
