CON: Robert Rodriguez's State of the Union - Heavy Metal, Sin City 2 and more!

Jul. 22, 2011by: Jason Adams

Check your watches because in 30 minutes youre not going to believe all the stuff I told you.

When Robert Rodriguez took to the stage at Hall H with that promise, he clearly wasnt joking. What followed was a self-proclaimed State of the Union, where the excited filmmaker unloaded about pretty much every project he's had up his sleeve for the past year.

First, Rodriquez updated everyone on his upcoming slate of studio efforts:

-MACHETE KILLS and MACHETE KILLS AGAIN: Apparently, MACHETE went crazy on DVD and Blu-Ray and the studio has already greenlit the first sequel and are almost 100% on the third film. Rodriguez giggled as he told the audience that MACHETE KILLS AGAIN is a space opera with Danny Trejo kicking ass in zero gravitywith a machete-shaped lightsaber. I kept waiting for him to say he was joking but he never did. In fact, he said the trailer for the third movie might be released before the second even comes out just because he likes it so much.

SIN CITY 2: Could be shot as early as this year. The film will have the same structure as the firstthree stories and a wrap around. One will be the long-anticipated A Dame to Kill while the other two will be new tales Frank Miller has written just for the film, one of which holds the promising title The Long Bad Night. Rodriguez says itll be shot in 3D and that he has a killer idea on to use the storys unique visual format to do something thats never been done before in the third dimension.

SPY KIDS 4D: Coming out next month, Rodriguezs latest kids movie is being released in Aromascope, where audience members can scratch and sniff during selected scenes of the film. He said some smells are good (like bacon) while others are pretty wrong. The director would also like to remind you that when he released SPY KIDS 3D eight years ago, he didnt charge you any extra for the extra dimension.

Next came the real reason for the panelthe announcement of Rodriguezs new Quick Draw production company, which will develop, produce, finance and greenlight its own movies. Thats right; Robert Rodriguez now has his own full-fledged self-operating studio partnered with tech company AMD, who will provide cutting edge technology, funding and even distribution for the movies. Other filmmakers (established or aspiring) can bring him an idea and the company will take care of the boring stuff to get it made while the director can just concentrate on the story. Its a freedom that didnt exist before, according to Rodriguez, and reflects his idea that todays filmmakers have to be part entrepreneur, part director.

The director than announced some of Quick Draws upcoming features:

-HEAVY METAL: While David Fincher was looking to make this, Rodriguez recently bought the rights himself and plans on exploring this whole world in film, comics and games. The man is clearly a longtime fan of Heavy Metal Magazine, even saying the only reason he was interested in making BARBARELLA a few years back was because he thought it might be his only chance to do something similar to HEAVY METAL. Then Rodriguez brought out owner (and Ninja Turtles creator) Kevin Eastman to show his support and enthusiasm for the future project(s) and gave the audience a sneak peek at the films title sequence (featuring music by the directors own death metal band). The two are still discussing ways to do the movie, potentially going the route of SIN CITY with three stories and a wraparound, but Eastman made it clear that lots of filmmakers love the property and want to work on the moviesome even for free! (Zack Snyders name was mentioned.)

If that group of fans includes you, Rodriguez said he wants you to help make HEAVY METAL too. Similar to the GRINDHOUSE fan contest that resulted in HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, the directors set up a website where you can submit your own story ideas, art reel, or short films and hes leaving a segment of the movie open for one lucky winner. Visit http://www.amd.com/heavymetal for more info.

-FRANK FRAZETTAS FIRE AND ICE: Rodriguez has been inspired by the cult artists work since age 11, even working with him on FROM DUSK TIL DAWN (remember Salma Hayeks headdress?). Though the man passed away last year, Rodriguez is partnering with his son Billy and Frazetta Properties to help keep his legacy alive with film and television projects and the licensing of his iconic imagery to generate income so they never have to sell his paintings to private owners.

The first step of that is a remake of FIRE AND ICE, Frazettas 1983 film directed by Ralph Bakshi. Rodriguez plans to do for Frazetta what he did for Miller with SIN CITY, crafting a film thats like stepping in to a painting and use new technology to make it look like Frazetta had directed it himself. He showed some gorgeous pre-production artwork that looked really promising.

Rodriguez will also help reopen Frazettas personal gallery in Austin, Texas as a museum, where all his masterworks can be seen by the public for the first time. He even brought 10 of his most famous paintings to Comic Con this year (including Conan, Death Dealer and John Carter from Mars). If youd like to see them for yourself, send an email to Frazetta@amd.com and theyll send you the secret location at the Con.

Extra Tidbit: This guy must never sleep. Seriously.

Oh Yeah!

Spy Kids 4 was making me ask myself "Why is Rodriguez your favorite director again?" but after just reading everything he said here I rediscovered why. He's enthusiastic about his projects and am SO happy to hear Sin City 2 might be closer to actually happening. Let's just hope this time it does actually happen. Machete was such a let down for me but I will welcome sequels. Frank Frazetta is my favorite artist and his artwork combined with Rodriguez's awesomeness is...well AWESOME!!!

I'll stop geeking out now but I sure hope there is another Predators in the works because that movie kicked ass.

So happy to see he's getting his own production company too. He's and inspiration and can't wait to see the talent that comes from Quick Draw productions. Would love to possibly send something in one day and have it made. Would probably make my life.

I love this fuckin guy.

At least he promises on what he gives us and makes it. As for MACHETE in space I laughed so hard, I could careless because MACHETE is a stupid movie meant to be stupid and not serious so having him in space is the perfect idea. His movie studio sounds sick, maybe I can send him my script for this movie I wrote and maybe it will get made. That would make my life. As for heavy metal SWEET. I think I went nuts reading all this. Awesome news.

Cool about Sin City 2, but...

...he's been saying it's close to production for years. Also, no mention of "Predators 2"? The movie wasn't an enormous success, but with such a low budget it's definitely as much a success as "Machete" was. You'd think the studio would be interested in a sequel.

Machete in SPACE!

That alone is genuinely the best idea ever. It just works on so many levels. Not only the piss take out of low budget 'IN SPACE' horror sequels, but also it'd be Machete...IN SPACE.

I mean C'MON!

Good news, but where's the Predator 4 stuff? And as excited as I am about "A Dame to Kill For" being the centerpiece of SC2, why would Miller write new stories? Just pull from Family Values and call it a day. Miller's recent (spotty) record makes me worry, but hopefully Xerxes and Holy Terror make it all better.

Well, as a bit of a...homework assignment to show you what I mean, go read "Batman: Year One" and "The Dark Knight Returns." Then read "All-Star Batman & Robin" and "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" and it will all make sense. You will see that the Miller of yesteryear is no longer with us.

Fortunately, I loved the original Machete, so I'm going to go with the prior on this.

R-Rod is a bit like Tarantino and Del Toro, endlessly talking about future projects just to excite the fans, even though most of it is just talk. I'll forgive Spy Kids 4 if he does Sin City 2 next. And although I wound't mind Machete sequels, they seem really unnecessary and he should focus on better projects (Sin City 2, mainly).

Some of these sound like interesting projects, and I am a fan of the guy, but some of these sound....well, not so great. Spy Kids 4? Well, this already looks awful. But with that smell thing? Wtf? And the Machete sequels. Look, I was a fan of the film, but sequels? Not so sure about that. While I am somewhat interested in the projects he has going on, nothing wowed me. Not terribly interested in the Heavy Metal or Fire and Ice stuff. I was hoping that we'd be seeing something much more original.

Nice.

This all sounds amazing. His output may vary in quality, but I love the way R-Rod works. I really can't wait to see what he does with Heavy Metal. Hopefully he'll get QT in on that.

You just know Tarantino is gonna be involved with one of the shorts...(assuming it's a series of shorts like the first Heavy Metal movie)

I'll believe Sin City 2 when I see it cause I've heard all this before, and I liked it better the first time. As for Machete I couldn't care less, the first movie was such a let down and a waste of talent. Fire and Ice sounds promising though, if it ever gets made knowing RR's A.D.D approach to film making. It'll probably be shelved in a year so he can focus on Sharkboy goes to Mars or something.

If you feel the original Machete didn't meet your expectations, then you failed to see through it's intention.

I didn't fail to see jack, nor shit, Bub. I know exactly what Machete was trying to be, and it even failed at that so don't give me that same ol' tired "you just don't understand it" Bullshit.

"Machete" was a blast. And "Sin City 2"? Bring it on.

He also helped make "Predators" a great flick.

Holy shit!!!!

While im still not fully in rodriguezs camp after shorts, predators, machete and spy kids 4 trailer i hope he gets out of this rut fast and finally sin city 2 getting closer to shooting, and hopefully on machete sequels he realises the mistakes he made and changes them. Wow the guy has his own studio and about time while i have recently been hating on him he has done wonders for filmmakers especially newer filmmakers and this news is just brilliant
