Concept art for The Amazing Spider-man 2 shows alternate Rhino armor

May. 5, 2014by: Alex Maidy

Everyone was excited when Paul Giamatti was signed to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 in the role of Rhino, but then we saw the costume and most let our a sigh of disappointment. It wasn't the Rhino we were expecting, at all. But, like any film journey, Rhino didn't always look the way he does in the final product.

Screen Crush revealed some Rhino concept art from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and an alternate costume that may have pleased a lot more fans than the final edition. Drawn by Jared Krichevsky, it is unknown how early or late in the pre-production process these costumes were pitched, but they definitely fall more in line with the comic book visuals of Rhino rather than the human tank we got in the film.

There is definitely a chance that the Rhino hardware could be refined for THE SINISTER SIX or future sequels to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, but for now we got what we got. Do you prefer the concept or the finished product?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is now playing.

I didn't see what all the fuss was about, It fit in well with the military aspect of what Oscorp were developing. I liked the way it was applied in the film and Webb said before the film came out that the Rhino run time was only going to be about 4 minutes. I thought it was a smart move to start the movie with him and end with him, like this annoying villain that keeps showing up to cause Spiderman more trouble. I loved the movie and am very excited to see what he does with the next

The movie version looks more like J Jonah Jameson's Spider-Slayer, The Rhino not so much...

That costume wouldn't work without some Russian MMA fighter in the role. Which in hindsight, it probably should have been. Casting Paul Giamatti seem to be an overkill.

With all the recent outcry over the design, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rhino suit/tech ends up looking like this.

Webb's explanation for the horn was that it might be used in some sort of mining application. A fellow schmoe suggested that the Rhino suit could be done in a similar way to the accelerator suits in the first GI Joe film, and I think that might have worked better. Paul Giamatti was utterly wasted in the part.

Not trying to be dismissive, but I never cared about Rhino. Comic, cartoon, games or this movie, I just never cared about him. I don't mind the way he turned out because the way they used him was so that you didn't have to care much about him. I thought he was fun, and maybe if you really like this villain you should be upset, but I just don't understand the outrage here.

I like what ended up in the film versus this shiny poop hat.

I dig the concept art more. Especially the bottom 2. Though I minded Giamatti's acting a more than the suit.

I didn't mind the finished product at all in TASM2. I thought it fit well within the world around it. It looks like a prototype for a suit that is meant to be more refined and polished. A suit that we'll later see in future installments. I'm sure they'll keep this concept around for later use.
