Browsing through the concept art from Pixar's abandoned film NEWT makes me sad.

I had heard nothing about about this project previous to this art. This looks like it would have been adorable! What was the story about? "What happens when the last remaining male and female blue-footed newts on the planet are forced together by science to save the species, and they can’t stand each other? Newt and Brooke embark on a perilous, unpredictable adventure and discover that finding a mate never goes as planned, even when you only have one choice. Love, it turns out, is not a science." This film would have been the directorial debut for sound designer Gary Rydstrom.

There's no detail on why the film was dropped at Pixar. I wonder what happened. Can we start a petition to get it going again? To check out the rest of the concept art, head here.

Been done to death
They shelved the movie because the story has been done to death, I mean we have that crappy "Alpha and Omega" movie coming out this month with the same story. Two members of the same species who *GASP* hate each other but learn to love each other after going on a wild and crazy adventure!

Granted, Pixar would have definitely done it better, but..."done to death" is SO true.

Even if the resolution took a transformative tone where each Newt finds other partners and lets the species evaporate, that's still essentially the way Ratatouille resolved itself. So even a twist wouldn't be original..

Probably a bunch of factors contributing to this being shelved. There are so many animated movies on the schedule from all the studios over the next few years, maybe they just couldn't find room for it in the time frame they had set up originally. Or the story wasn't coming together as they would've liked. Or, as some have suggested, it was too similar to other movies coming out soon (Rio and...

A shame, though, cuz it looks like my kind of Pixar movie. As far as favorites, Finding Nemo was the apex of Pixar's greatness for me.

I see potencial here... but I want CARS 2 and MOSTERS 2 even more. Let's hope they make NEWT in the near future.

This seems like it'd be cool. My top 3 pixar movies would be Toy Story (1), Wall-E, and Monsters Inc, followed closely by Up. The only pixar movie that sucked was cars. and now their making a sequel of it. I thought this mightve been because they were running out of ideas (finally), but looks like they could've used this one.

I dunno, it does kind of sound like Alpha and Omega. I'm not really into Pixar as much as other people, they're on and off for me. I don't care for something like Up but I do like Toy Story 3.

I rarely question Pixar's moves, so far they have done awesome things, but to shelve Newt for sequels, is wrong! If they plan to make this movie in the near future, that would be cool.

Great concept art, such a shame that they dropped it but are making a sequel to their worst (even if it's not really that bad) film. Looks like it would have been special.



As for favourite Pixar film, I think Toy Story still holds the top spot for me, with Wall-E taking second place.

I hate to see this film go to waste but I on't hate on Cars 2 or M Inc. 2 because I know Pixar and they always seem to come up top with whatever they do.

I still don't get why they'd rather make Cars 2 and Monsters Inc 2 instead of this movie. I love Pixar but I'm wa more happier for their original ideas than the sequels. The only sequel I want is The Incredibles 2 and I'd still rather have Newt than that.

It's a heart-breaking situation really. Pixar is the kind of studio that put quality over quantity. These guys really pour their souls onto their work, and to see something like this ditched is just tragic.

This would have been another great Pixar movie. Really surprising to hear it got shelved.

The art of the character on the car is really cool! Kind of a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride vibe.



This would have to be better than whatever Cars 2 turns out to be. Cars the original was a big meh-fest.

incredibles, nemo, monsters inc, toy story 1,wall-E.--it seems like an ok story but im guessing that something in its story just didnt work or fell flat. their art is always epic, and yeh.. cars 2....bad.

I was really looking foward to this movie and seeing this art makes me even more sad...Cancelling this movie and doing Cars 2 are the only letdowns by Pixar yet...I hope we'll see more original Pixar storys like this in the future instead of sequels.

My guess... Fox Animation fast tracked an eerily similar animated movie called Rio. Check out the snyopsis:

NEMO for the WIN!!!



Love the look of this already. I have loved everything from Pixar to date (even their shorts - I actually look forward to the films more because they have a short before them!!), and was really jazzed about this. And now I find out it's been dropped :( Booooo!

Hopefully they'll get back onto it someday, as would love to see this made someday!!

Would have much rather seen this over Cars 2 which is easily my least favorite Pixar movie. My favorite has to be Toy Story 3 or Finding Nemo.
