Wow, I was just heading out to lunch when some breaking news came across the inbox. It's official: Sean Connery is OUT of INDIANA JONES 4. Said the actor in a statement, "I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an INDIANA JONES film. I love working with Steven and George, and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun." It's looking as if John Hurt will replace Connery as Dr. Henry Jones as the studio has confirmed Hurt has joined the cast. They haven't confirmed anyone's role yet but Hurt's announcement was concurrent with Connery's. The release also confirmed the previous casting announcements of Shia LeBeouf, Cate Blanchett and Ray Winstone. For more, including Connery's full statement, check out the film's official site here. Pretty big bummer that they couldn't get Connery back. It'll be the one big, weird continuity break between the original series and this fourth installment. Oh well...the show must go on!

could be wrong
I'd read about a month ago or so that if Connery did not agree to reprise his role that they would write the character out of the story. At least I think I remember reading that. That could have been in a dream I had where the exec's were actually making sensible decisions.

Ah, poo!
This is seriously disappointing.

I hope his part is seriously small, then, if John Hurt is going to make the feeble attempt at filling Connery's shoes. It would just not work right if Dr. Henry Jones had a big part played by someone else.

wow, how disappointing. i was hoping connery would want to return. it would be retarded for speilberg and lucas to recast, lucas himself said they would be able to write the character out. with that said, if its so simple for him to be written out, could it not have been such a small role that connery would have been able to just spend a small enough amount of time away from his "fun" retirement?

This is strangley a good thing...
If there is one thing we have learnt about these recent sequels, over-crowding can suck the fun out of the liveliest venture. I doubt very much the John Hurt will replace Connery. That would be sacrilegious. I think it could be better if Hurt is the father figure Indy always yearned for. Connery's absents could easily be pushed aside with a cute dead pan quip and now that I'm done selling...

Mr. Spielberg, please read this.
You are far and away my favorite filmmaker of all time. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is my favorite film of all time. In my top 5 of all time, 2 of those films are yours. So trust me when I tell you this: Please stop this film now. I know you and Mr. Lucas have spent quite a bit on this film already. Cut your losses and close down production on this film. This is not even in response to this news,...

umm
What about announcing John Hurt as having been cast in the film indicates in any way that he is replacing Connery?

I'm sure he is playing a different role.

Completely upsetting, and earth shattering. Nothing was going to get Connery back. It's a shame. The only thing left to do is bring back Sallah!

I still don't see much of a reason to see it whether Connery is there or not, but I can't see little John Hurt replacing him. They shouldn't replace the original characters, Marcus included. So I'm hoping Hurt joins as the smarmy villian.

I doubt
I doubt Indy's dad will have a pivotal role in the film like he did in the 3rd. So no biggie.

Well...
If you read the article on the official site it says, "While the man with the hat is back, this time he's not bringing his Dad." Plus, the article doesn't say what role John Hurt will play. I seriously DOUBT they'd recast Sean Connery

Give him a white beard and a suit...
With good make up and good acting, I think it might work. Jon Hurt is afavorite of mine, and I can totally see him in a fumbling old dad comic relief role.

Kudos.

Keep your pantyhose on...
People need to calm down...Who said Hurt was going to be Jones Sr? There are other members of the family who he could play. ...(or Marcus' brother)

PLEASE write the character out. Replacing him is a ridiculous idea. A terrible, terrible idea.

THIS NEVER HAPPENNED TO THE OTHE FELLOW!
WHERE'S GEORGE LAZENBY WHEN YOU NEED HIM?!

Hurt's a great actor - but the rule should be no Connery, no Henry Jones, or you might as well cast Jullianne Moore in the part Hannibal-style.

ok, Sean - enjoy the golf
this time he's not bringing his Dad

This CLEARLY tells us that the Dad part will be rewritten or taked out of the script. No recasting here. Perhaps his Dad's brother, maybe, can fill in the blanks that Henry, Sr. was to provide....

And perhaps Sean is just too ill to make more movies...perhaps this is just the best for everyone.

NO HENRY JONES
I am a big William Hurt fan - but if Connery isn't going to be Henry Jones then Henry Jones needs to be taken out of the script. PERIOD.

Please Christ, do not let Hurt take over Professor Henry Jones. If there is a God in heaven.

I'm a die hard Indy fan, and I've been hoping for a GOOD fourth Indy film since I could remember, but good news concerning Indiana Jones 4 is hard to come by lately.

With all resprect to John Hurt, but no one can replace Connery in the role of Henry Jones. The chemistry between him and Harrison will be missed. I'm really starting to believe Indy 4 is a really bad idea ....
