Cool Videos: 10 things that superhero movies in 2012 did better than the ones in 2013

2 years agoby:

With days left in 2013 we can now look back on the superhero movies released and come to the conclusion that this year was lacking in comparison to 2012. Sure, we got the return of Superman and the first Phase Three movie in IRON MAN 3, but overall the movies just felt less immediate than last year. Even with THOR: THE DARK WORLD and THE WOLVERINE bringing some darkness to the movies it seems like everyone is looking towards CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST rather than reveling in what we got this year.

Why, you ask? Well, this video breaks down the 10 rules for making a successful superhero movie as illustrated by last year's films like THE AVENGERS, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. While those three were not perfect, they certainly kept the bar high for what was to come. And nothing in 2013 quite met that bar. Take a look and see if you agree.

Bring on the superheroes of 2014!

Unedited death scenes

I lost interest when they showed the unedited death scenes. I get that it's supposed to be a joke and all but now a days I feel like I'm the only one who appreciates when movies take time with characters. It's heartbreaking when Colson and Cap. Stacey die. It's heartbreaking that in the story, Peter looses another father figure. The amount of grieving screen time he's given is very emotional and power and perfect as edited.

The Wolverine is what a comic book movie should be. Mature and mostly down to Earth but that climax was eh . At least Wolverine didn't destroy a city or had a stupid haircut like Peter

I've enjoyed all the superhero movies this past couple of years ( althoughI havent seen man of steel & don't really care to anytime soon).. I know some of them had big flaws but the films themselves were good enough to look passed them

Ugh.

Dumb video, the only thing that makes remote sense is yes 2012 had better superhero films than 2013.

I did enjoy Man of Steel and Wolverine though.

While I think 2012 was a better year at the movies than 2013, I still had a lot of fun and I enjoyed Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel more than most. Yes, Man of Steel didn't go the way many had hoped, but I think that it pushed the franchise forward, however inelegantly it did so. I didn't hate Superman Returns, but it was too slavish to what went before and had the series treading water. I also liked The Wolverine this year, not excellent, but perfectly decent stuff and a definite improvement over

the video is... meh but I agree with the article

I also thought the superhero movies were pretty bad this year. Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 had zero excitment, they were predictable, without any drama and with way too many comedic elements that didn't fit the tone of the film and was poorly executed (especially Thor). The best moments we had were in The Wolverine but only in the first half of the movie. When we got to the kidnapping of the love interest it became too obvious that the plot will be this simple and the "twist" was one of the weakest

When we got to the kidnapping of the love interest it became too obvious that the plot will be this simple and the "twist" was one of the weakest I've ever seen. Again the movie felt boring. Man of Steel, on the other hand, had pacing issues, silly story ideas (disasters just had to happen randomly when Clark is around) and terrible handheld cinematography. It had insulting amounts of destruction and it made the most powerful superhero look the least heroic this year.

2012 was probably the greatest supehero year at the cinemas (2008 comes to mind as well). TDKR delivered ridiculous amounts of drama and epicness, while also addressing issues such as fiscal irresponsibility, social revolution, political viewpoints (without taking a stand) and truth/morality. It was a great film and one that gets waaay too much height from some people. Avengers was a good comedy that has stuck to its comedic approach through the entirety of the movie, unlike Marvel representatives this year. Thanks to the ensamble they had it was also a huge event, when like nothing we've ever seen in cinema. TASM actually grew on me with time and even though I still think it was unnecessary it wasn't really bad.

Yeah, 2012 was a far superior year for comic book movies.

IM3 and MoS were both a let down. Wolverine; the first half of the movie was great, the last act, not so great. The CBM I personally liked the most this year was actually Thor 2.

None of the comic book films this year were as good as last years. Iron Man 3 didn't come close to The Avengers. The Wolverine might have been better than that other Wolverine movie, but a major step down from First Class. And even though I was disappointed in TDKR, it was certainly far better the unfocused clusterfucker that Man of Steel was.

Personally I thought Avengers was the ONLY good superhero movie last year. DKR was okay but ultimately a mess and a letdown. And ASM was poor, unengaging and forgettable. This year, I enjoyed the hell out of Thor, Wolverine and Iron Man (which was messy but at least it was fun).

Disagree

While Ironman 3 was disappointing to me, thanks to it's twist and ending sequence, I LOVED Man of Steel and thought they hit the nail on the head for the new take on Superman, Thor was about what I expected, loved the Cap cameo even if it was just Loki making fun of Cap and how it ended was great, and The Wolverine was much better than I expected, and I did enjoy it.

First off, Let me admit I love *both* Marvel & DC. That being said...

In my personal opinion "The Avengers" & "Man Of Steel" were by far much more entertaining than "The Dark Knight Rises" & "Iron Man 3". So I'm split.
