Cool Videos: 11-year-old Natalie Portman's audition for The Professional is damn impressive

06.17.2013

Any Natalie Portman fan knows that the Oscar winning actress stunned audiences with her debut role in THE PROFESSIONAL, or LEON for the non-American fans. Her role as Mathilda is the central role to Jean Reno's character going from cold-blooded cleaner to a father figure to the young girl. THE PROFESSIONAL is one of my favorite movies and I don't think I have met anyone who dislikes it.

In an interesting find, Natalie Portman's audition reel for THE PROFESSIONAL has been found online and shows the 11 year old actress with a stunningly skilled ability at such a young age. It baffles me that someone so young can inhabit a role so well and it also shows a precursor to the stellar career she would go on to have.

As a big Natalie Portman fan, I think this video is a really cool look back and a nice reminder of how badass THE PROFESSIONAL is. On the downside, no one wants to think about someone they spank to when they were eleven. Creepy.

Not as awesome as Henry Thomas' jaw-dropping E.T. audition, but still good. She's a great actress and on re-watching the Star Wars prequels, I can't imagine how she just sleepwalked through them.

George Lucas was the director. I'd say that pretty much answers your question.

It's interesting looking at bits of the earlier script to see that Leon wasn't exactly a 'father figure' as some proclaim him to be. Luc Besson wrote Mathilda and Leon's relationship a bit more controversial than what we saw in the American release.

She overacted certain parts for sure, but you can definitely see her burgeoning acting skills in other parts. The overacting is easy to tone down - she just needed direction. Especially for child actors, I'm sure they may have the abilities but not the brain yet to make the right choices acting-wise. The important question was whether she could make things feel natural and when she wasn't making a choice to overact in that clip, she did well.

That was really bad, no idea what they saw in her. She was great in the role, but this was almost comically bad.

Wow

Anyone who questions Natalie's abilities as an actress needs to watch that clip. No wonder she got the part, and no wonder she's had such an amazing career. I first saw her in BEAUTIFUL GIRLS and she stole that film from under some high-powered acting talent there, too.
