Cool Videos: 60 Minutes previews Spider-Man on Broadway

Nov. 29, 2010by:

Whether or not you consider this a "cool" video depends on what you think of the video below. Last night, "60 Minutes" ran a 15-minute report on the upcoming Spider-Man musical "Turn Off the Dark." I'll admit that I'm pretty impressed with the wirework and physical effects on display but beyond that I'm not much more optimistic.

The musical had its debut on Broadway last night and in talking to some New York City friends who were in attendance, it was a visual marvel but a storytelling disaster. That's unfortunate to hear as I'd rather find out the story is genius while the stunts still need some work (the show is just in previews, which would leave the production some time to fix any technical glitches).

Check out the video below to learn a little bit more about the musical and see if it's something you'd be comfortable spending about $100/ticket to watch...

Extra Tidbit: Somewhere Alan Cummings, Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess are breathing big sighs of relief.

Godawful! Take a lap.

While some of the stunts looked kinda cool, overall that just looked terrible. I hope this is a huge failure and I hope Julie Taymour goes away forever. She is all visual and nothing more. Across the Universe looked cool but it was such a terrible movie. I'm a huge Beatles fan and I thought that movie was such an insult to them. Hopefully she can just go away after this disaster. And I can only hope that she takes Bono and The Edge away with her. They are equally terrible.

I'm sorry I just don't see anything masterful about the film. Shallow, wooden characters that I couldn't care less about. Some of the musical numbers are great don't get me wrong. I hate Bono but I actually enjoy his I am the Walrus and the trippy Mr. Kite scene that follows. But most of the songs are just sung so bad by the main cast save for the black guy's amazing rendition of "while My guitar gently weeps".

Which brings me to my problem with the over abundance of beatles references. Some

Which brings me to my problem with the over abundance of beatles references. Some of the them were nice and subtle but most of them were just so over done and obvious that it became too distracting from the story. I would rather they focus on trying to tell their own story without trying to tie everything into Beatle's references.

I'm not hating on anyone for liking the movie. That's their own opinion. And my own opinion is that it just did not gel with me on multiple levels mnostly due to horrible character interactions.

You thought it was an insult to the Beatles? In what way? I think the larger audience agrees that Across The Universe was a masterful way of telling a story using Beatles songs.

So Dancin' Spidey got his own spin-off from 'Spider-Man 3'? Cool... I guess.

The music is, of course, absolutely shit.

This entire video watches like a Bad MAD TV sketch or something. Investing so much time in a musical about Spider-Man is just beyond idiotic. Taymor must be filled with so much arrogance to convince herself she can turn Spider-Man in to a high brow Broadway musical.

Didn't she say that at near the middle of the video? Obviously, something kept your interest for that long.

Honestly.

That looks fucking awesome, the villains might look silly. But this is Broadway. Once they get all the technical problems fixed, I would love to see it.

Previews aren't just for technical work. Some shows endure massive re-writes and revisions during previews and tryouts. "Sweeney Todd" had extensive revisions done during previews. During its tryouts, "Next To Normal" changed immensely (it was originally titled "Feeling Electric"). The new musical "Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown" went through extreme re-writes during previews (although, the show, which is running now, still hasn't been well received).
So, technical glitches, as well

So, technical glitches, as well as storyline issues can be solved during the preview process. That's why previews are usually around a month long.

Uh...that looks cool! Not sure why people are bitching on it. Chances are, unless you're going to new york or are into broadway, you're not going to see it anyway. I remember watching the live action spider man show at Universal studios and seeing the actors swoop around above the audience was really awesome. Plus, Taymor is smart enough to involve Carnage. And the music sounds pretty good too. I say give it a chance.

Oh, the elitists are out today. Someone referred to Taymour as a hack...That hack created one of the greatest & long lasting Broadway shows of all time. Lion King? The show is brilliant. It looks great, it sounds great...and all because of her talents as a director. I admit that I'm not much of a U2 fan, but it isn't because they "suck" or that they are "horrible". Their talents far exceed mine--sure exceed those of anyone posting here. The three collaborators hung on for the better part of ten

You could say it's for the money, but they've basically given far more than they may stand to gain back. That leads me to believe that they strongly believe in this project. If three of the most garnered talents in performance arts think that what they've created despite their losses is worth it...there's no reason for us to not believe in it. So remain sour because they took an abstract approach to their villains...even created their own...but remember that their talents got them somewhere for a reason. What've you done lately?

Well today I finished my first draft of Rent 2: Rent Harder where Mark and Roger fight off an invasion of HIV positive ninjas possesed by demons. At the end the whole cast has a rock off against Satan in order to save NYC and also to pay their rent.

LOL

I can't help but laugh at all these people that shit on this show. It actually looks pretty awesome visually. I can't say anything for the story, but the effects sure do look nice. "Oh, it looks like shit!" Really? I can only assume you people can do better. "I will, I just won't make it!" Wow, way to be challenged and show your artistic prowess. These negative comments just crack me up.

Schwarzgerat,
I won't argue, as you make a valid point, however, this doesn't have to do with being a cinematic genius. This is the Theatre, a much more demanding field than Film.

Ah, the old "you can't criticise unless you can do better" gambit.

Does the opposite also apply? Meaning you can't
praise something unless you, too, are some sort of cinematic genius who knows if something looks good or bad because of your own expertise in the field?

Well, that's going to leave the Strikebacks rather quiet, isn't it?

Opinion on the musical aside, anyone who refers to themselves as 'the edge' deserves to be curb-stomped repeatedly.
