Cool Videos: Awesome Batman: Strange Days animated short from Bruce Timm

04.11.2014

If you're one of the many Batman fans who sorely miss Batman: The Animated Series, then this may be the best gift or cruelest tease you'll ever get. Producer Bruce Timm, who crafted the old series with Paul Dini, has put together a new animated short featuring the Caped Crusader, called Batman: Strange Days, which feels like a stroll down memory lane. The short is part of Batman's 75th Anniversary and has the Dark Knight tracking a strange giant to the mysterious lair of Dr. Hugo Strange in a pulpy, 1930's setting. Everything from the music, the voices, the action, and animation style will remind you of the good ol' days when Batman ruled animation. It's a bittersweet short because of that, but a great little watch regardless.

Timm gets Batman. He gets that Batman is rooted in the classic pulp detective genre, and he completely embraces the genre's heyday era of the 1930's & 40's. Batman isn't about saving the city from mass destruction, he is about solving crimes. Batman is more Sherlock Holmes than James Bond.

Actually, I would argue Batman is both. After 75 years Batman has covered a lot of ground and I love big epic Gotham City saving stories and think Nolan did a great job with the trilogy. However I would agree that very few people get Batman like Timm and nothing beats a pulpy Batman mystery solving story and not everything has to be epic.

G.O.A.T

There's no reason they shouldn't bring back Batman The Animated Series. Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Kevin Conroy together formed the perfect Batman.

I still think Batman The Animated Series is the best incarnation and representation of Batman in film/television.

This was absolutely beautiful. I loved the Nolan movies to death, but Batman TAS was still my favorite take on the character ever. Instead of all these other Batman cartoons they should just bring back this. I would either love the original brought back and have it take place 10 years later , or do a whole show with the same creative team, but in this 30's pulp style. Either way that would be awesome. This truly made my day.

That old-school Batman look (before he had the scallops on his gloves) has been brought to life so elegantly in this short. Gotta love original flavor lumpy-headed Hugo Strange!

Amazing!!!

absolutely LOVE the 1930's-1940's serial style. Love the way the cowl is designed just like the original animation back then. seriously, I know people shit on David Goyer and Snyder (i really like them when the material is strong) and i love MOS. If Dini and Timm teamed up with Goyer, snyder and nolan for the DCU....HOLY FAK theyd be unstoppable.
