Cool Videos: Check out the suprisingly epic and badass trailer for the Pakistani pic Waar

Aug. 12, 2013by:

The least likely market you'd expect to produce a big-budget action pic is Pakistan. Okay, so maybe that's not the least likely, but it's up there. However, director Bilal Lashari has been putting together his film WAAR for a few years now and after a delay in release the film seems to finally be moving forward. The English/Pakistani language film looks to be the level of a Jason Bourne political thriller mixed with some contemporary settings. Mostly, I'm just amazed at the production level for a market that doesn't produce these kinds of films. Like, ever.

Check it out:

Pretty cool, right? I mean, sure some of the acting is hammy and the action is on overload, but it still looks like a damn fun ride. Could this be the launching pad for future films from Pakistan? One can never tell. The film is set to debut sometime this year in Pakistan, but will likely make it's way to other regions at some point.

That's not dubbing. The film was made in English.

Lets see, we went into Pakistan in force. Shot some people one being the most wanted man in history and flew the fuck out in Chinooks no less. And their military did nothing but read about it in the paper the next day. So excuse me for not buying this horse shit.

Um, did you not see Zero Dark Thirty? They went in there like a bunch of little bitches in the middle of the night, tip-toeing around with silencers. Quite a pussy move for the word's most powerful army.

Umm. No.

Politics aside, this looks bad. I mean, I give them credit for making something better than Bollywood caliber, but...this has all the hallmarks of a cheesy made for TV action flick. The slo-mo removal of shades. The "I dont do this anymore" lines. The one on one duke out in an unlikely location. The tango. If these were American actors and a Hollywood pic, this article would have been 80% laughter.

I think people here need to understand something. Pakistan doesn't really have a film system. They have very little in the way of film, working mostly in television. So for Pakistan, this is a big accomplishment. To us, in the States, this seems like another run of the mill action film with all the cliche trademarks. But for Pakistan, this film is going to be huge. It will also do well in the States where there are big Pakistani communities.

People understand all of that full well, at least I do. The problem with this film is the fact that they've tried to make a typical (bad) American-style action movie instead of trying something fresh and/or more related to their country and culture.
Also, why go straight for action? It's one of the hardest genres to pull off, especially on a low budget. They tried to run before they could crawl and so they tripped, hard.

lolzzzz. I've seen that hero in action on countless occasions - one movie where he slapped a woman...creating both an amazing sound effect and facial expression on said woman - funny shit. Movies and tv shows in Pakistan generally look like they were made on home made video camera (such is the sound quality) and/or made in the 60's (such can be the picture quality). Whilst I can think of at least one attractive Pakistani actress (who must surely have retired by now) from Pakistan's movie

Whilst I can think of at least one attractive Pakistani actress (who must surely have retired by now) from Pakistan's movie world, the rest can be a combination of being a little on the chubby side and very prone to over doing their make up. I dunno, been a few years since I've seen a Pakistan movie...so perhaps they've come a long way since then. If the look of this movie is anything to go by...the industry has revolutionised exponentially (were talking a growth of epic proportions here). Oh, I've just remembered another attractive Pakistani actress (who attracts a lot of controversy). Still, nothing will ever beat the classic Punjabi movies whered you get repetitive zooming in and out of the main protagonists when they showed upor where theyd shout at someone by dramatically facing away from them and looking at the camera.

Oh, I have nothing against chubby women. Perhaps it's good that Pakistan allows women of all shape to be the lead heroines in their movies. As it is, I only ever recall two male leads who would show up as the heros in every movie - the one in this movie being one of them. The other one is probably in this too.
