SHREK proved to be one of DreamWorks' flagship animated titles, paving the way for sequels, merchandise, and even a rides. The duo of Mike Meyers and Eddie Murphy seemed inevitable, but as most SHREK fans know, that wasn't always the case. Before succumbing to a drug overdose in 1997, Farley had been cast as the lead ogre. Chris' brother, Kevin, had stated that, "Originally the Shrek character was a little bit more like Chris, like a humble, bumbling innocent guy.” Chris recorded most of his dialogue for SHREK, although following his death, the filmmakers ended up turning to his Saturday Night Live co-worker Mike Meyers to bring the ogre to fruition.

What we have here is some audio from Chris Farley's recording sessions set to the backdrop of a few storyboards. As you'll see (and hear), Farley's portrait of Shrek was not quite as "in your face" as Meyers', and contains a few of the mannerisms we've come to expect from him when he gets excitable. You can decide for yourself which take you prefer, but one thing's for sure; the world of cinema is still missing out by not having him around.

How I miss Farley when I see all of these other comedians trying to copy his style. The man is a legend. Damn shame he left the world the age and way he did.

I respect Farley

He was a very talented and funny comedian, but I prefer Myers as Shrek.
Farley here seems to be simply doing his thing, Myers created a character.

But one could argue that he already created the Scottish speaking character from his SNL days and on Shrek he merely found an excuse to use it.

Oh God... He was perfect for Shrek! I mean he sounds like a more relatable character than Myers, and while Myers' performance was funny as well, the Scottish accent made Shrek a bit too lovable from the get go. With Farley's voice the movie plot's payoff would have been much sweeter.

If Chris were alive we would already have a true ghostbusters remake or sequel with him in it

I teared up...

I just can't believe I am almost as old as Chris was when he died. We lost him way too soon. Imagine all of the horrible remakes he could have been in. He could have been the Internet Ghost Hunter in Poltergeist, he could have been a victim of Jason or Freddy. He could have been The Thing instead of Jamie Bell. (Has there been ANY original movie since he passed?)
