Cool Videos: Creating the barrel scene for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

One of my favorite scenes from THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG was the barrel chase. Everything was building up to that point then suddenly this great action scene sort of breaks the tension. I loved watching it, and wondered how they might put something like that together. I had an idea but had no clue that they would have to cut down and edit 98 minutes of footage.

A scene like this is one of the many reasons why I love the LOTR and HOBBIT films. The action is superb. Not only that, but it makes me wish I had a small role so I could take part in creating something like this. Eh, maybe one day...

Has anyone ever explained why they left that weird "GoPro" shot in the film? Talk about distracting. Other than those 5 seconds, I loved the sequence. Particularly the "barrel roll" and "dwarf hopping" shots.
