Cool Videos: Fan goes to Hawaii, films his own Lost ending

Jan. 18, 2011by: Mike Sampson

Disappointed with the way "Lost" ended? Well, you're not the only one. But unlike you (you lazy bastard), Corey Vidal did something about it. The Canadian filmmaker took his camera and some friends to the spots on Hawaii where they filmed "Lost" (and where many of the sets still stand) to work on his own ending.

Like the "Lost" finale itself, what Vidal came up with, "The Man Who Brought Us Here," is flawed. But while there are narrative issues and some questionable acting skills on display, what is notable is how Vidal took fan-fiction to a new level. Writing new stories based on existing TV or movie material is nothing new but Vidal and his crew took it to a new level. They created a short film that very much feels like something from the "Lost" universe. As a fan, it's hard to not see those sets and hear that music and not have that illicit a certain positive dramatic response.

In leaving the sets up (for how much longer remains to be seen), it's almost as if creators Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have left fans a software developer kit to create their own spinoffs of the "Lost" universe. Vidal's might not be great but what it is, is a great start. It's a fantastic idea that will surely spawn even more creative work. "Lost" may be officially done but as long as the sets still stand, you have the power to rewrite your own ending (or beginning).

Confusing, but what else would you expect from a Lost fan-film? I can't believe the sets they used still exist. If I ever do go to Hawaii, I'm definitely seeking those out!

Oh yeah, and that doesn't feel like a replacement ending at all, it just feels like a continuation of sorts since they dropped Hurley's name as the man in charge.

Ummm......

What exactly was the point of that? Guy asks another guy to do something vague and ambigous, meets up with girl he's never met before, they look for an alcove or whatever because the light that they can't see is gonna flash or whatever, and guy namedrops Hurley. Seriously, what the hell was the point of that? They could have at least tried to, you know, make this little short film make sense within the Lost universe. Kinda just looks like a bunch of idiots running around the jungle and very

Kinda just looks like a bunch of idiots running around the jungle and very monotonously reading the script they wrote that same morning. I could have farted while on my webcam and it probably would have made more sense than this. Cool idea and all, but terrible execution.

Gotta' give him props for the effort. But wow, the acting is extremely corny. Monotonous dialogue. Good filming, really cringe-worthy acting. LOST was many things, but it somehow avoided being corny 99% of the time. This is corny from the start. But really, great effort. Hopefully this isn't the guy's coping mechanism to not getting the ending that he wanted.

...

This just goes to show that just because you and your rich friends have the money to afford a fancy HD camera and a trip to Hawaii it doesn't mean you have talent at all.

What I loved about this article is the notion that those sets are still standing! I didn't know that, I think a trip to Hawaii is now in order!

Wow.. besides the obvious flaws (terrible, atrocious acting and line delivery) what the fuck was this about?
Granted, the kid has balls and drive to go out there and film his own ending (it was shot really well and the cinematography capture the show's own)
but was there a story and/or point to what the fuck I just watched? I'll never get back those 6 minutes of my life.. that's sad.

Parody

I don't think this is supposed to be a "new ending" so much as a parody, partially making fun of Lost's absurdities, such as the "Yes, an ALCOVE" line (because people always repeat dumb things on the show). Also, the ending resolves absolutely nothing, just shows that the mystery is on repeat, which is another jab at the show not really explaining anything (me thinks).

Well that was cool...

That wasn't to bad, it was awesome seeing those sets still there. Really awesome, the acting yeah wooden, but hollywood has more lousy acting then what I just saw. The guy who played drew was really good. The girl who played megan not so good. I was LMAO when they first met, and she had that face like she wanted the dude to bone her or some shit. But it was nice to see this made. I hope more get made.

PS> who else cried like a little bitch when the showed ended. I did. It was depressing

i got teary eyed, yet i havent thought about it once since. Kinda disappointing. Soon as it ended I though, "man, im gonna watch my dvds all over again." Now I just look at them collect dust. The Jacob episode nearly fucked the show up for me, easily my least favorite in the run, it was so bad.

I know the feeling. Friday Night Lights is ending in a month... and it is, by far, the best show on television. I will cry like a baby when it's over and be incredibly jealous for anyone who is starting the series from the beginning having never seen it before. I feel ya.

ok some people loved it (me included) some people hated it. the important point is... MOVE ON. it was a year ago. Stop bitching about the ending and to quote the guy in forgetting sarah marshall when talking about the sopranos, "move on. find another show."

The barracks was actually filmed at a camp, which used existing buildings, so that's not going away. I can't imagine ABC would have left structures standing in the jungle after the show wrapped.

Oh, Lost fans....

....you'd think they were first people in the history of the world that were ever disappointed by a series finale.
